One thing is for sure in business we have leaders. These boys are going to a Business University..... Why one would not name a captain and the asst is an issue. How can the coach hold the leaders responsible if you won't identify them! The collapse was significant and really I can't pinpoint the issue. Leadership! Weak defense! Offense that collapsed or they decided to play for themselves and not the team! The players need to be accountable! In the end you need a team leader and they need to hold individuals accountable! They are or should be old enough to understand.

This is a great post... almost. Direct this argument at the coaching staff, athletic dept. and board and you made a good point. *Great* coaches get the best out of their players, period.

Snively - like you, I've chosen to stop talking about this year (save for my end of year recap and analysis within the lines at what went right and what went wrong on the past year). I've also stayed relatively silent during the arguments taking place here about who to blame on the collapse of the end of the year. Personally speaking? There's plenty of time for me to look within statistics and having watched nearly all the games this year to find analysis, and I hope that all of you will be able to put aside your petty differences to see clearly at an objective point of view. My take will come within the next couple of weeks, but I woudl like to sit back and enjoy a little time off from Bentley hockey now that it's all over.

That said, I've put some genuine thought into where I would place blame. Like I've said before, I'm very open about the fact that I'm a Ryan Soderquist guy. I respect him as a man, and I respect what he's accomplished at Bentley. He's been the steward of the program since it turned to Division I, first as a player, then as a coach. Nobody loves the Bentley brand more than him, and he understands, probably more than anyone else, what he's up against in terms of financials and the build of a program from the ground up.

I don't absolve him of all blame for what happened, but I think there's a strong case that this one season shouldn't undo what he's accomplished. This team proved it could hang with the big boys; it just didn't do it consistently enough over the entire body of work of the year. More than just the last month, this team is picking up marquee wins against marquee opponents, and we have to credit Soderquist for bringing in the talent when the program clearly is at a disadvantage. The players, when recruited, have to buy what he's selling. And I don't think there were any *real* problems in the locker room except maybe the frustration of losing to teams.

This team met every team at the worst possible time, and it steamrolled the end of the season on them. I think the team needs to play more consistently, but I believe in the talent that was there. Honestly, scoring goals wasn't the problem, and neither was defending them. They just didn't defend when they were scoring, and they didn't score when they couldn't defend. On an emotional level, I was as angry as anyone when the season ended, but having taken a few days to step back, I can see where the things went wrong and wehre they were going right. I see a couple of things that are being fixed this offseason, and I think the offseason comes at a good time. As the year progressed, I realized this team wasn't going to be a championship team in the AHA this year, and the target is next year.

As for people saying this is all the players fault, I don't believe it is. I also don't believe it's entirely the coaches' fault. At the same time, I don't believe this is a bad team. I just believe this is an unlucky team that unraveled at the worst possible time. You can say that this is a coach's fault for not addressing, but at the same time, this is still a very good team with a very good coach who's won multiple conference Coach of the Year awards. I can almost guarantee that next year, we'll be singing a different tune. For the Soderquist haters, if the team goes to Rochester next year, you'll criticize him for not winning a conference championship. You'll criticize him for not doing it in multiple years. And you'll criticize him for squandering a chance to bring this team up and forward. And that's simply not true.

And for the people who are blaming the players, if the team comes forward, you'll criticize their drive and wonder what the heck happened during this past year. You'll also crap on them for not having hte heart the year before and needing to lose to toughen up (which honestly, might be true). But at the same time, that is also not true. It's hockey. When you're playing bad, you lose. Every team had a rough month, sans Niagara, really. Bentley's just came at the wrong time.

That said, my end of year analysis will come soon, but I'm checking out for a little while. I think we're all a little fried from the frustration at the end of the year, and I think it would serve us all very well to just kick back and relax and then come back with an objective view devoid of what is, right now, apparently high emotion. Believe in Bentley. And, like Snively used to say when people would come here and knock the team something fierce on the boards, know that we're all in this for positive support and positive, constructive commenting.

Well I respect that opinion but like I said - I'm taking emotion out of this so I can examine the season through what went well and what didn't. Coaches and players are not exempt from praise or criticism.

Matt Blomquist and Andrew Gladiuk are named to the AHA All-Rookie Team, the second year in a row the Falcons have had players named and second conseuctive year they've had multiple players named.

He's not scoring goals but he's going to hit people. He's also a big man who can play on the 4th line, something Bentley hasn't had in years.

As great an impact as Gladiuk and Blomquist made the first half this past season, what I want to see next season is senior leadership. It seemed to me that the three seniors from this past season never really had much chance to demonstrate leadership, like the three d-men and two penalty killers from the third or fourth lines did the year before.

Just for the record, you CANNOT sign an LOI until the year prior to entering a college. It either can be in the early signing period, for hockey a week in November, if not signed in the fall prior to year of entry signing can't be done until mid April. Just saying
