    Alright, for the record,
1.I did not say a word about the coach. I spoke about the game system be executed(not the pp sytem BTW).
    2. you are proclaiming that Micah would have been a savior on d this season a dman who Soderqusit only seen fit to play 15 of 40 games last season as a junior. And you state during the major pk, inexperienced dmen wouldn't be playing but -10 experienced dman should be?
    3. Ever stop to wonder why your 3 senior forwards now 3/4 line checkers were in your top 5 in scoring as Freshman.!!!!!!!!!!!!
    4. And before you boast about Brown's 14 forward converted to D as being a brain child move. Take a look at that players pedigree. Top scoring forward everywhere he played. Even at National festival. Foolish that he hasn't been playing regulary and as a forward.
    forgot one

now I am done, like I said hope for the best for your guys, the team is talented top to bottom and should have dominated this season for sure.

Gensler (now in place of Blomquist; he used to play up where Switzer is) is on the right, with Weinstein on the left on the blue line. Grieve wins the draw, and the puck goes to Weinstein. Gensler cycles drawing a defender with him and gets the puck. Gensler comes to the middle of the hashes in between the faceoff circles and goes to Switzer on the right. Switzer hits Weinstein's tape up top, who looks left or right. He eventually goes to Gensler who has the authority to determine which way to go based on coverage. Gensler goes outside to a shot to switch directions cross ice through the defense. IT lines up a shot from the outside on a wide open net. If it's saved, it can't be saved cleanly, and Grieve is there in the middle to put it back.

You want proof that the pp system works? Gladiuk has 4 pp goals and Grieve has 7, the most since Dustin Cloutier, who was a pp wizard when it came to shooting because all he had to do was shoot the puck on his own. Cloutier's system was to get the puck and everyone get the hell out of his way. Gensler occasionally can take the shot himself, but so can Weinstein, and Weinstein can also come off the line if he sees the defense split enough. Weinstein himself has five of six goals on the pp. The threat of Weinstein stepping up and passing it off to Gladiuk or Gensler is enough to open up a shot lane, and his shot is good enough tos neak by.

That's a system play by design every single time. Bentley never changes the pp system when the top line is out there; it happens every single time. It's one thing to know its coming, it's another to stop it.

    ******

Other counterpoint on your love of these players - last year's team statistically. Last year's team statistically wasn't great, especially at the beginning of the year. They opened up the season 1-5 (granted two of the games were at michigan and one was at umass). Took two points from four games against NIagara and mercyhurst by going 0-2-2. Swept by RIT. Couldn't beat HOly Cross.

The team got hot at the end of the year by going 4-1-2 in divisional play. That's about what they need to have happen this year. Somebody said it (I don't remember who) that a bye would be doable by going 6-1-1. Now they're 0-2 with games left. What's that mean? Well, it means that they can still do better than last year's team IF they turn it around. They'll end probably in the same spot, which is saying something considering. The system is exactly the same as it was last year, and I fail to see a time last year when someone didn't come up with a big play. And they went into the playoffs and laid an egg in Game 2 against SHU. But they were within a mad dash comeback and double OT game of beating RIT at RIT, where dreams go to die. When that series ended, RIT fans were shocked they'd made it through. It took 63 shots and 2 OT to beat that unit in Game 2, and that was on a team predicted to finish 10th last year. This year they predicted 4th and now they're 10th.

I'll look inside the stats since stats can be bent within the confines of what you're trying to prove. I go back to the Holy Cross tie at home on the second to last day of the season. Gensler and Marginsky get sent to the can for 2 full minutes. Mike Switzer and Trent Bonnett stayed on the ice for the entire two minutes, and the only player that switched out was the forward on the PK. THat was switching between Aaron Stonacek and Jamie Nudy, two more seniors who were, as Snively pointed out, PK specialists. It was a huge kill, and there was always the chance of a goal. Yet with those guys on the ice, you KNEW, you just KNEW that they were probably going to kill it. Switzer and Bonnett made Komm play that much better by limiting position.

Is it Soderquist's fault that he didn't adequately prepare for life after those guys? Yeah a little bit. But we're forgetting one major piece of the puzzle. Micah Williams. Williams quit at the end of last year because he was unhappy with his playing situation. If you insert Williams into this rotation, all of a sudden the whole dynamic of inexperience is different. And it's nobody's fault other than Williams that he quit. He didn't want to be there, so he gave it up despite all signs pointing to a leadership role on this unit. All of a sudden the defense has Weinstein-Blomquist, Marginsky-Ledford, and Williams-Maher/O'Brien/Reardon. Maybe Reardon becomes the tough guy 4th forward in the form of Kayfes. I know this.... when Ledford went to the box, that PK unit would've had Micah Williams on it instead of multiple freshmen. That's not the coach's fault that a guy quits. It's a coach's fault when 5 guys quit (see also: BU)

My last point is about Soderquist the coach. He's a 2-time AHA coach of the year. Despite having 12 scholarships as a limit in the AHA, Bentley offers less than that. He's managed to have terrible facilities and put a team out there that's still considered a program on the rise. HIs system coaches have gone onto coach elsewhere; Mark White is down at Brown coaching a defense that's one of the best in the country right now. The funny thing is that White's doing it with a team that's using a converted 14th forward on the depth chart and a goalie that hadn't played in 2 years before this year. It's all system down there, and Brendan Whittet brought in Mark White for his recruitment/system knowledge. Soderquist was mentioned as a name alongside Paul Pearl when Rand Pecknold turned down the UMass job. He's considered one of the better coaches out here, and he's put Bentley in a position to play teams like Michigan and Northeastern and compete....unlike what AIC did when they gave up 72 thousand goals to Minnesota last year. He's one of the best at scouting an opponent, and he knows how to get it done.

PK - you've been on Soderquist's back and I commend your commitment to that. But at this stage of the game, we need the players to dig deep and find heart. Hell, you can win a title with a terrible head coach even if Soderquist is that bad if you want it bad enough. At some point, the game becomes less about coaching and more about the players doing what it takes on the ice. The coach isn't the problem at this stage of the season. We could always have CJ Marottolo or Gary Wright. Thenw hat would happen?

Good weekend but not great since the tie will probably haunt Bentley and keep them out of a first round bye down the stretch. If I'm haunted by anything, it's that Mercyhurst OT loss earlier in the season. Make that a tie and Bentley might actually finish 4th. Big time bummer...

Sacred Heart is no longer without a win and will be trying to extend their winning streak at the JAR this Friday night. Holy Cross left their post-season bye door slightly cracked open in their 7-3 loss to the Pioneers on Tuesday night, but the Falcons will need to win out and get some help if they want the bye. The Pioneers and Yellow Jackets (4-0-2, longest current non-losing streak in Div 1) will be looking to make some more noise the next two weekends.

On the bright side, SHU has been due, and Holy Cross did everything humanly wrong in that third period. My guess is that it didn't open the door too much because they still have a game in hand against that same team at home, but it might've at least opened the door for a team like RIT to get past them whereas had they won, it would've slammed it shut. Holy Cross was tied with UConn and RIT; had they won, they would've had a 2 point lead with a game in hand still against a crappy team. The Crusaders get 2 with ARmy and 2 with AIC starting this weekend with the Yellow Jackets.

For Bentley's sake, I still think they'll finish 6th and end up hosting AIC in the first round. RIT is going to end up 7th and end up with either Army or RMU, both of which present a matchup nightmare right now for the Falcons. The loss all but assures Mercyhurst of a trip to the second round via a bye.

Not sure that I would prefer the Falcons to meet the Yellow Jackets and Meisner instead of the Black Knights or the Colonials at the JAR in the first round given the recent play of these teams.

It's funny, but I remember when AIC beat Quinnipiac - now the #1 team in the nation. They were outshot 40-17. Meisner made 39 saves and stood on his head. Everybody thought he'd be the next coming.

Then he played Bentley and gave up 6 goals on 21 shots and didn't even last to the end of the game. He was pulled witha bout 10 minutes to go in favor of Chandler Long. So as good as he can be, he's susceptible to getting killed. And I can't blame all that on the defense since in the same game, Bentley only outshot the Jackets 34-32. Gabe Antoni was in net for that one and looked pretty good.

I think AIC is a much better matchup than Army is for the sole purpose that the Army style really worries me. AIC's been hot, and I think they can beat Bentley as they have anyone else. But at the same time, I look at the potential matchups and I'd much rather face a team I've scored 7 goals on with a backup goalie in net than I would a team with a track record of beating me.

Agree to disagree, although I can definitely see your point as always, Professor!

The famed 5 on 3 vs SH last year! Just wanted to add that ..this year's team ...killed off 5 on 3's vs both Michigan and Dartmouth! I know it probably doesn't matter much vs ...those... teams, it wasn't playoffs or anything....

I will follow beenthere's lead and say that I find PKs exciting, and especially SHGs.

So, three of my top 10 "JAR moments" for this season were Hartung's, Gladiuk's, and Rickord's shorties against Sacred Heart way back on October 16th, with Rickord's unassisted getting special mention.

I really liked Gensler's GWG (assists to Weinstein and Bloomquist) with less than 3 minutes remaining against UConn on November 17th (Gensler's additional ENG goal made that one 3-1).

Next, I would include Weinstein's tieing EAG PPG (assists to Gladiuk and Bloomquist) with about 30 seconds left in regulation to tie Mercyhurst on November 23rd (only to lose 4-3 in OT).

I would include Rickord's tieing goal (assists to Gensler and Fitzstephens) with about six minutes left against Air Force on December 8th (game ended in 2-2 tie).

Finally, there is nothing like a GWG in OT, so I will include Switzer's (assists to Gensler and Grieve) to beat Canisius about 3 minutes into OT on January 18th (I did not actually see this one, just heard about it).

So, there are my top seven. Hmmm, six of these occurred during the first half. Hope that I can add three more to my list from the last two home games.

If I had to pick a single moment, it would be when Mike Eden's family was introduced on ice before the first game. The Falcons Nest held up 8's and Mike's sister dropped the puck. I know there weren't many dry eyes in the rink when that happened.

I'd also throw out there Steve Weinstein's big hit against Kevin Roy during the Northeastern game. Roy had already had an assist, but he was streaking through the neutral zone not playing defense (because he never does) and Weinstein shaded back. Roy came from right to left and BAM - #24 buried him. It was a great moment, and it turned the tide of that game squarely into Bentley's favor. That was a moment when you knew Bentley wasn't losing that game.

I have a JAR moment - Friday, Feb 23, 2007. In its first year in the AHA and ineligible for the postseason, RIT incredibly wins the regular season title, closing it out with a 3-0 win over Bentley. RIT fans had shown up in numbers and made a championship banner for the team. In a very classy move, Bentley coach Ryan Soderquist let the Tigers have a few minutes on the ice after the game to take pictures, etc.

The Falcons got what they wanted the next night, which was two points to avoid the 8th-9th play-in game. They beat the Tigers 7-6. It was the first collegiate start for RIT's third string goalie, a freshman. He allowed all seven goals. His name? Jared DeMichiel.
