We stunk in every facet of the game and it was our worst game of the year,” Pecknold said. “Obviously, we can’t have that at a time like this. If big program coaches can call themselves out ...... and as a side note blomquist and the rest of the injured were back for the final two losses vs a team that these guys sweeped mid season.

Gensler is playing like he's out there for himself now, and Grieve is trying too hard to do too much. Komm, all of a sudden, can't stop water if he fell out of a boat. And the loss of Blomquist is exposing the defense ofr being even worse than it was. And Blomquist is only a freshman!

If they're home against Canisius, it's a loss in 3 games. With any luck, they'll somehow get Army in the first round.

I've followed ECAC longer than I have Atlantic Hockey. Rand pecknold is a dingus. It had nothing to do with Qpac in this game. They got manhandled by Brown, and he also never gave them any type of indication that brown did anything right to win that game. I respect the hell out of Quinnipiac and their fans, but you should probably do some more research before you look into anything else.

That said, this is not a comment on Ryan Soderquist. But this is a comment on someone saying Pecknold is awesome. The consolation game in ECAC was the Arrogant Festival between Yale and Qpac. Two coaches who are among the most arrogant people in college hockey.

I will not be surprised if Canisius plays two games in Providence; quite the turn-around for them this season.

Ok folks -- starting up the 2013 offseason. Not ready to close the book on this thread yet until the school year ends or we start looking at next year. This is more of a look back than a look forward, so I'm keeping it going here. Starting up with a look at the O:

Dan good article. I am not sure if you were clear enough at times but I would agree the coaches picked a path and failed. Moving Switzer off the first line and then moving grieve and Gensler to the third line was crazy. The team had no leaders and the line that should lead was split 2/3rds of the line put in as the 3rd line was simply a poor decision. Not winning face offs was problematic and the defense was poor. Pick leaders and hold them accountable. The players have to learn that they are teammates and individual glory is second to team success. If players don't buy into team sit them! During the hideous 2nd half we saw plenty of I and not enough of we as the team fell from a good offense to no offense. It is the coaches job to get them straight. Pick your lines and live with them all year. Big hint don't move your best line to 3rd line status!

I feel like the players didn't do anything to help themselves and forced the coaches' hand, which bordered on desperation at times. I fancied it up a little bit, but at its heart, I really believe that they recruited too many guys to play the second line and tried to force square pegs into circle holes. They didn't have enough leadership or energy guys to get guys to do the little things. I look at Brown Univ. over in ECAC. Jake Goldberg was a forward who was languishing on the 3rd line or not playing at all. His career stagnated because he was a 2nd line forward who couldn't play on the 2nd line, and he wasn't the right fit for the 3rd line in that system. This year, due to injuries, the coaches asked Goldberg to jump back and play defense. Goldberg turned into a top 4 defenseman and one of the best players on the ice for Brown by the end of the year. And that's a 7th place team that went to the conference finals in a league much tougher than the AHA.

That said, I think the same happened at Bentley, but there was no "team first" mentality. I don't know who, but certain players didn't give up the puck or the body and I think that's a thing that killed them. They didn't have the same type of leadership; there was definite leadership but the team wasn't a pack of guys who could have a physical practice killing each other. They really missed that type of dynamic from the previous year. That led to a lackadaisical style on the ice. In the end, the coaches made moves because they simply had to, but the moves they made failed. You can't expect someone like Gladiuk, who's a 2nd line skater as a freshman, to start skating top line. Grieve isn't built to ever play on the 3rd line. And Gensler really fought the puck for a long period of time, but because the coaching staff simply couldn't sit him down because of a lack of bodies, they had to just drop the whole line. It was a bad move; I'd have rather Gensler sat out a couple of games than have him skate on the 3rd line because his job isn't an energy guy. But there weren't enough bodies when the time came to bench him.

My personal opinion centers on the thought that when things got rough, the coaches tried to do too much and overcompensated. They didn't have the right horses for the moves they made, and it caused some more issues than it was worth. I think they have the right guys coming in to create 2 deep scoring lines, and I think they have the right guys coming in to fill out the back end of the rotation. And I think the team could be better in two years than next year. Do I think they can compete for a title next year? Yes, but only if they're able to skate in predetermined jobs that have players doing x,y, or z or they sit on the bench. It has to be a hard line.

I don't know why I'm going to respond to this, but I do know Ryan Soderquist, and he's no Rand Pecknold. Rand Pecknold and Keith Allain are the two biggest jerks I've met in a very long time. Ryan Soderquist cares about the program and the growth of the program; all it takes is a conversation with him to realize that. Allain cares about himself more than anyone else on the planet, and Rand simply forgot where he came from.

I am not sure why I am responding but I think you and I didn't watch the same team. Offensively they were doing fine until coach started to make changes that really didn't
make sense. Clearly Switzer struggled in the beginning but that was no reason to break the line up. He then continue to put different combinations of Grieve, Gensler and flavor of the day. Most sensible people would have either stayed with what worked in the prior year or make one move and stick with it. Instead he took the two moved them primarily to the 3rd line and took the confidence out of the two award winners from the prior year. So when you say you should of sat Gensler I guess you are saying that he may have been the problem. I watched every game and saw the kid struggle but even during that timeframe he made passes to people thst should of buried it yet they didn't. if you haven't notice the past two years gensler has had more assist than goals more like a center. I submit to you he should be the center not the right wing. He has a vision thing that needs to be used at the center position. I believe one of the broadcast your color analysis pointed it out.

That being said the problems on the team were numerous or at least it was from this end of a computer. Poor defense that never closed gaps and senior leadership that never
showed on the ice.. I never saw this last group go out and make a difference. Say what you will about Nudy but he never gave up and worked his you know what off. This year's team had no one like him. Goal tending was an issue but I chalk that up to the poor defense. Good defense that can make the first pass makes the team. Once the forwards get the first good pass it is their job to score and it shouldn't be left to one or two guys. You need the energy line one that will go out and bust
someone and we know we had no such animal. Unless you know what went on in the locker room then you don't know who was leading what so we should all consider what went on as and unknown. So long story short the seniors coming to their final year can and should do something more as they have a talented group of forwards. Given the fact that they might pick up some decent defense and the goaltending steps up their is no reason why the team could not make it the the AHA finals. it takes a team and it takes team leadership to make it to the finals. If the incoming seniors care and somehow I think they will then they will get the team to the finals. They will need help from
the incoming freshman but an energy line, defense that can do something and forwards committed to the team can make it happen.

Agree with all of this. Like I said, dropping Gensler to the 3rd line was a mistake, and I honestly think it got everyone out of their game. If he really needed a night off the top line to rediscover his game, then he shouldn't have been in the game in the first place. I believe a night off is sometimes beneficial. I would've never dropped that first line down to the third line because the job of the 3rd line is something they can't possibly do. I believe in keeping with the concrete job descriptions of each individual line, and it's obvious that didn't happen.

I think we're saying the same things, albeit in different manners. As I mentioned before, leadership was an issue on this team on the ice. There was no vocal leader in the games, and I think we've said that several times. The team seemed disjointed, and there was no heart and soul type player making the calls. Someone will need to step up next year and fill that void. I think Grieve is probably the player most likely to do it; he is such a respectable young man that his attitude towards the game and life in general is worthy of a letter.

Of the recruits coming in, three are proven animals. I think Deresky is going to fit nicely onto the fourth line, and I really think Max French is going to be a wake up call for a couple of different guys. I'd like to see Meads get extended minutes on the third or fourth line; the kid played his tail off in a couple of different games, delivered hits, made the most of some seriously limited minutes. He deserves a second look next year; he's built like Koudys and Nudy, and he can play with that same style. I'd love to see him turn into a fourth line, Jamie Nudy-type player.

Thanks for posting Globe article link, Humanoid. Pre-game 1 tribute to Michael Eden was a highlight for me this past season. Kudos to Dan Koudys for his post-2011/12 season visit and delivery of the stick to Michael. And, bravo to Coach Soderquist for wearing the necklace and locket with Michael's ashes for every game this year. All takes the sting off the short post-season for me.
