  • Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

The Spartans got a verbal from defenseman John Draeger, who could be our second Shattuck St. Mary's pickup in as many years.

Nicholas Gatt, a 6-3 195 lb. defenseman, will transfer in from Alabama Huntsville for the 2012-13 season. In 27 games last season as a freshman, he had 3 points and was a +27 for the Chargers.

That brings to a total 5 new defenseman for MSU next season:
Gatt, Draeger, Boyd (another transfer), Walsh and Holland.

          Make that a minus-8.

That's a good number. The team will loose four to graduation (three playing regular shifts) and who knows if any underclassmen will leave (for any reason.. re: Josepher for example) so building up that D core is going to be critical. Oh, and lost Carney already.

ANASTOS ANNOUNCES THREE ADDITIONS TO SPARTAN ROSTER FOR 2012-13

Three players sign National Letters of Intent to join Michigan State hockey program

Michigan State hockey coach Tom Anastos has announced that three players signed National Letters of Intent in the fall signing period and will join the Spartans in the fall of 2012. Forward Ryan Keller (Farmington Hills, Mich.), Defenseman John Draeger (Faribault, Minn.) and goaltender Jake Hildebrand (Butler, PA) will join three previous signees – forward Matt DeBlouw (Chesterfield, Mich.) and defensemen Rhett Holland (Calgary, Alberta) and Travis Walsh (Lansing, Mich.) on the Spartan roster for next season.

“When we assembled our staff, one of our main priorities right away was recruiting,” said Anastos, who was hired in March. “We are very serious about making Michigan State a program that competes for the top recruits, brings in quality men and high-level players, and also developing those players to play at the next level. We’re very happy with the players who have committed to our program as this class brings a nice blend of size, skill and toughness to our team. We are losing a very large senior class at the end of this year, so there will be plenty of opportunity for these players to compete right away. We are excited to welcome these men into the Spartan hockey family.”

                • Re: Seriously think about 2012

With 3 defensemen, 2 forwards and a goaltender having signed LOI's for next season, there are 2 other 2012 commitments to consider:
F Joe Cox (Muskegon) and F Mike Ferrantino (Omaha).
D R.J. Boyd is a transfer in for next season.

                  Gone will be -
                  Perlini, Leveille, Nill (forwards)
Palmisano (goalie) plus McMahon, who just left
Crandell, Shelgren, Buttery and Sturges (defensemen)

So our defense is set. There may even be one current d-man who drops off and we're still alright.
Right now just two goalies are projected to be on the roster.
I'm assuming Joe Cox will be here next season, and we'll be fine for forwards.

Nice work on recruit spreadsheet done by MSUStudent on Spartanmag.com.

Also, here's a story on 8th-rated USHL skater and 2012 freshman Matt Deblouw. Deblouw is rebounding nicely after a scary injury early last season.

Heisenberg says we picked this kid up yesterday for 2014: Justin Bailey, a 6-foot-3, 182 lb. forward from Buffalo, NY. He has a 1995 birthdate.

Here's a story on the kid, and here's a video feature on the kid.

Seems like a solid pick-up with pretty good size.

Bailey is a MAJOR find for the 2014 class. I hope he lands here.
Also, it appears D Nicolas Gatt will be transferring to MSU after all.

So, we picked up another commitment from another Perlini for 2014.

Really though, if Anastos can find a way to get these kids to sign LOIs, he's going to have a pretty darn great class for 2014.

thought i'd bump one of these threads since i've been thinking about college hockey quite a bit lately.

Previous discussions had a Mike ferrantino possibly heading here this season? Will he be included in the new class? I was gonna post updated stats from last season on our recruits but i noticed that nice excel sheet had most of the games so stats only changed by a few points for the most part.

Also, remembering all the **** Hokeydad slung at RJ Boyd earlier in the thread, i thought i'd point out that since that discussion, he posted a +9 in 50 games played which by my count was tied for the 6th highest +/- on the Indiana roster.

Also, '13 recruit Mackenzie MacEachern absolutely tore up the high school league last year at nearly 3 points/game. Anybody know where he's playing this next year? I kind of hope he takes his talents up to Juniors against better competition.
