has Chris Bradley suddenly turned into a scoring D-man? He scored a goal again tonight...http://ushl2011.stats.pointstreak.co...gameid=1660208....Devito was scoreless.
Brandon Pirri: Turk would give it to Jagr. That's awesome! Jagr's untouchable. And he would give it to Jagr.

That was my point, but the scenario is getting worse every year. 5-10 years ago most teams had at most one or two players recruited more than a year ahead and a significant percentage, had none. For axample, when Seth was hired in the spring of '06 the only commitment we had beyond the upcoming season was Joel Malchuk. Now, we already have 5 in January and there are other schools that have twice as many. Some have effectively filled their 2013 slots and are heavily working 2014 and beyond. Changing coaches could have a detrimental recruiting impact for 2-3 years.

On Sunday, the Youngstown Phantoms lost to the Chicago Steel 8-6. Chris Bradley scored a powerplay goal. Jimmy DeVito had no points or penalties. http://ushl.stats.pointstreak.com/bo...gameid=1660208

        Bradley's line is now 29-5-6-11-8.
        DeVito's line is now 32-4-10-14-69.

        What suddenly happened to Bradley?

I realize that the situation has been getting worse with schools recruiting players not in high school yet. I do have to mention that Fridgen was not receiving commitments in advance near as much as other coaches of his time. With most others we would have had more than one advance recruit when SA took over.

It's true that Fridge was very late to the early recruiting game but other ECAC schools weren't that far ahead of him. At this point in the '05-'06 season (Fridgen's last), ECAC teams had just 5 players committed for '07 (source: Heisenberg's '07 class list commit dates). That compares with over 50 on Heisenberg's latest list for '13 and after. Even by the time Seth was hired in mid-April of '06 there were only 18 commits** for '07. By mid-April this year several teams will probably be focused on '14 and after as they will be almost done for '13.

Admittedly the ECAC was later to the party of recruiting players several years ahead of enrollment, but the numbers above are emblematic of the major shift in recruiting in the last 5-10 years. There will certainly be coaches that are surprisingly successful or unsuccessful using inherited players or recruits, but a coach being hired today really won't have majority of his own recruits on the ice until at least his fourth year and often later. That definitely complicates firing, hiring and performance evaluation decisions.

                ** It was a nicely even distribution - 3 schools each with 0, 1, 2 and 3 '07 recruits by 4/19/06.

We aren't far away from being done with 2013 except on D. Assuming that Kasdorf is coming, we will probably get a walkon for #3 goalie when Merriam leaves. On D we are losing Bailen then and Bergin either this fall or in 2013. Leonard is one replacement, and we will need one or two more. This year we are lsoing 5 forwards and next year 3 more. Zalewski, Miller, Bourbonnais, and perhaps Wood for this seaon, but we could stop with 4, although it seems we will try to get one more. The following year Bubela (who may come this fall), DeVito, and Wood, and perhaps also Melanson. I again suspect we want one more.

I believe this was strategic as opposed to being late. I do remember that some of his best recruits were late commits.

I also see this as a double edged sword. For example, there are early commits from various programs who spend more time than originally planned playing an extra year or two of junior hockey due to a lack of developing to projected potential.
I've been lost since 1989. I got a breakaway on a frozen river and have been skating ever since.

Let's face it, a lot of the best recruits are snapped up early. Clearly some of thosse turn out not to be so good, and some that are passed on early get better, but most of the blue chippers are recognized severl eyars befor college.

Interesting to note also the difficulty of determining which "child prodigies" are simply players who peak earlier in life - especially prevalent in soccer. Freddy Adu was supposed to be the player who put American soccer on the map when he was signed to DC United at age 14. Eight years later he's a role player for an MLS team and only an occasional call-up to the national team.

But of course, for every Freddy Adu out there, there's also a Wayne Gretzky or Tiger Woods.
Keep an open mind. Just don't be so open-minded that your brain falls out.
