      A few thoughts:

Only reason they even said anything today is because Union is going to say something first. This really wasn't dragging for a Catholic school priorities are a little different Holy Week.

Hopefully Leaman was clever enough to cover his butt in his contract and get some of the necessary perks Army never got from the school to help make this a more level playing field with the other Hockey East schools.

As far as the choice between Quinn and Leaman.. I think Driscoll is walking a fine line when he said the choice wasn't money. I think he covers himself because I got the impression Leaman was always his first choice, but if things could have been worked out with Quinn at the point Leaman was saying he was a Union man they would not have "upped the ante" for Leaman

As far as why Leaman over Quinn. I think they see Leaman as more stable and less likely to jump before the job is done. I was also told he has a clear and realistic rebuilding plan. The person supporting Cavanaugh mentioned how he talked about renewing the days when PC landed the Carpenters and Fitzgerald. That was also what Army said it would take to get the program righted, trouble was those type of guys are not just going to myteriously appear. Quinn may not have been quite so bold but to point to saying I"ll bring in better players doesn't cut it since it does not happen that way. When Lou rebuild in the late 60's early 70's he did it in small pieces Lou was great at getting small pieces and then he built upon that. We need to gain respectability first.

It is hard to really judge Leaman. What he did at Union with no scholarships where now the way most Ivies can distribute money to make up for the lack of scholarships is remarkable. However in the end the may be Union's pinnacle.

I reread DLeo's post the other days and realized he did mention how Lou snagged Leaman's goalie. You do wonder if that was Lou's way of applying a little pressure. At the very least the timing could not have been better

I do agree with Freds it will take awhile to rebuild. Though I think he has to get some results in 3 years. I wonder if he gets the right to buyout some of the scholarships and bring in his own players to move the process along

It will be intersting to see if Union moves quickly to hire Bennett.

Well HAPPY NEW YEARS (sort of)...

I guess this means it’s finally time for time or a new pair of purple paints?
Anyone know where those rose-colored glasses went?
I'd like to have them put in storage for a little while (perhaps three years)!?!?!?

Anyhow hope all is well with everyone.

Curious as to what perks Army did not get that Leaman will need?

There you go...figured it was coming soon if it was Leaman

Good luck to him, he's gonna need it!

Cav you nailed it (as always). I think though based on the available candidates that there's no real way you can quibble with this hire -- given their current standing and lack of success, it's close to a slam-dunk. They got the current head coach, a young one, of a program he built out of nothing...you're right it's no guarantee and like I've said, you can't necessarily figure it's going to translate to Hockey East...time will tell.

Though I think he has to get some results in 3 years.
Totally agree. This was always the rule of thumb with Army but it kept getting pushed back. At some point it either turns around or it doesn't.

My question is how long of a deal does he have...surely the school is going to be patient, but I also hope they didn't commit years of money unreasonably (I wouldn't expect that they can). I also agree completely the turnaround really will not be judged until the 3rd year. The next year, possibly even two, are going to be struggles. Unless there's really all this untapped talent there that Army had no clue what to do with, it stands to reason it will be an uphill climb until his own players come in here.

And the next shoe has dropped. We are picking up Ben Barr the 2nd assistant at Union. Union didn't waste time because if they hesitated we'd have given Bennett enough as associate head coach to make it worth coming back but he does need the experience as not really coming close here or at UML proved.

So, does this now mean Barard to Union as Associate? he and Rick are pretty close. Is Barr Associate or assistant at PC? I do not think we had that distinction with Army's staff.

Well, I hope the new coach can get the PA system to play at a reasonable volume. The last 2 coaches couldn't!

Congratulations to Providence College hockey. You have yourselves a quality coach and more importantly a quality individual. We are going to miss him dearly at Union but thankfully we have another quality guy in Rick Bennett to fill Nate's shoes. I hope the expectations at PC are reasonable and that Nate is given enough time to turn things around. The symmetry here is kind of striking. Rick Bennett from PC to UC and Nate Leaman from UC to PC.

P.S., Ben Barr is a great young man and coach as well.

I wouldn't worry about that. The disintegration of the program over the last 15 years or so has lessened expectations to the point where it's not going to take much for Leaman to be a success, which is something in his favor right off the bat.

Does that mean he should get a contract extension after one year.

No the Driscoll will extend him if he has a strong press conference May 3
