Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Moy doesn't include UNH in the bubble teams but doesn't say they've clinched. I asked Priceless on his Pairwise Predictor thread, and he said...
"I get them out with BU winning Hockey East, Ferris winning the CCHA, Dartmouth winning the ECAC and CC winning the WCHA. That puts them at 14, but the cut line would be 13 because the AHA Champ, Ferris (16) and CC (15) would take autobids.

UNH should root for Western, Harvard and Wisconsin tonight and take care of BU on Friday."

Joe Marsh and his Larries always give us good games, and more often than not wake-up calls, in January; I am rooting for them, and Harvard tonight; cannot risk Dartmouth hanging around with a tie for 15th in the pwr at the moment. Looks like RPI, Maine, Minny, and St. Cloud are now out of it, as will be a few others after tonight.

If BU doesn't take care of business in the next 20 minutes, UNH will have to get past Merrimack on Friday.

Scoreboard watching is fun, but at this point in the season, anybody you play is going to be a good team.

UNH will need to play a better 60 minute game Friday night if they want to play Saturday night. What I found most frustrating about the game was we saw UNH play well, and dominate at times, but the effort / play wasn't there for 60 minutes. That won't fly this coming weekend.

Radio guys last night were saying, if NU advances (leading to a BC v NU semi-final), League Offices will push for that game to be shown at 8pm, which would be rare - the #1 seed usually gets the early game.

It's ultimately up to BC though right? They get to choose which game they want, don't they? Would the league be able to force them to take the later game?

I thought so as well, right up until I heard the comments on the radio last night. I always thought it was entirely up to the #1 seed, but I guess I was wrong.

Northeastern now up 3-1, about 12 left in the game.

Something tells me that the T will have to hold the last trains once again -- could be a very long night of hockey! And an NU - MC final isn't out of the question, novel though it may be not to have one of the "big 4" (or is it now "big 3"?) playing for the championship. It's never happened before in the history of HEA, as far as I know.

Well, with BU and Ferris State losing this evening, it looks like UNH has a very good chance of making the NCAA Regionals in Manchester. And congratulations to Dartmouth on their win today.
                        NU-BC & Merrimack-UNH - should be a very interesting weekend.

Dartmouth is going to AC for the ECAC tourney, so there is still a chance that they could flip UNH for the 3rd seed at Manchvegas, sending BC to St. Louis.

                            Well, let's look...

Merrimack has never been to an HE final. They've been to the semis, but only once, and lost to BC.

NU has only been to the finals once-- in 1988. They beat Maine 4-3, but lost in the NCAAs later that season... to Merrimack. So there's a certain bit of poetry if that matchup were to happen this season.

Since 1985, only five times has a championship game not involved either BC or BU (or both, for that matter-- that's happened twice).

                            1988: NU def. Maine
                            1992: Maine def. UNH
                            1996 PC def. Maine
                            2002 UNH def. Maine
                            2004 Maine def. Amherst

Notice that all of those games involve either Maine or UNH, and twice involves both. So if NU and MC were to both make it to the final, it would indeed be the very first time that none of the "Big Four" teams make it.

I'd have put money against BC not making it to the championship game this year... but frankly, I think if there's a team in Hockey East that can do it right now, it's Northeastern.

Think of it like the beginning of Rocky III: Rocky (or in this case, UNH) has held the title for a while, and just kinda goes through the motions, fights some contenders, and enjoys the winnings. Clubber (Merrimack) viciously slugs away, waiting for his chance at the Big Time, waiting to make a statement.
                                http://board.uscho.com/showthread.ph...=1#post5027063

That analogy suggests that UNH will get smoked this weekend, only to drub Merrimack in the HEA finals.
                                Oh, come on!

Well, except for finals part, we'll see if Irish's analogy holds.
