  • Yale Hockey2012 Off Season Thread

Hate to start this thread but lets use this space to talk about the program and the upcoming recruits and 2012=2013 season.

Nice article about Brian O'Neill in the New Haven Register today. Nice props from Donato as well.
    http://www.nhregister.com/articles/2...3577331346.txt

Somehow not surprised to see that he turned down pro money last year.

A fantastic player who plays much taller than his stature, he will be sorely missed.

Thanks for starting this thread, LTsatch!

I mentioned this at the end of the regular season/playoff thread, but it seems as though Broc Little is leaving Vasteras and going to a team in the Elitserien (Sweden's top league). According to EliteProspects.com, the team is either Djurgarden or AIK (this hasn't been confirmed yet, though).

Brian O'Neill signed with the LA Kings today, looks like he'll start out in Manchester. Best of luck to Brian, he will be missed in New Haven.

This from New Haven register Reporter Chip Malafronte's blog from last month---
I added the games to the schedule below, I think this will improve Yale's strength of schedule numbers significantly.
            YALE 2012-13
            (some dates may change)
Oct. 26-27: Ivy Shootout at Brown (with Dartmouth and Princeton).
Note: The format has been under discussion, and could be changed. But as of now, the plan is to play everything at Brown.
Nov. 23-24: at Denver; at Colorado College
Note: Yale was originally part of the field of the Denver Cup. The tournament is apparently in flux, but the Bulldogs kept the date with Denver and secured a game with CC to make a weekend of it.
            Dec. 12: vs. Massachusetts
Dec. 28: vs. Russian Red Stars (exhibition)
            Dec. 30: at Holy Cross
            Jan. 5: at Boston College

Re: Yale Hockey2012 Off Season Thread

Brian O'Neill makes a good start at Manchester.

ST. JOHN’S, NF – Forward Brian O’Neill’s debut was a memorable one as he tallied his first professional goal that proved to be the game-winning tally as the Manchester Monarchs defeated the St. John’s IceCaps, 3-1, at the Mile One Centre on Saturday night.

If anyone is interested his team is coming into Bridgeport to play Sean Backman and the Sound Tigers on April 1st. A 3pm Sunday game.

Re: Yale Hockey2012 Off Season Thread

Nice synopsis of Yale's incoming class from chip Malafronte, I am still not happy about the Sullivan situation.

                  Yale will bring in 8
Yale will take another sizable graduation hit, including the loss of the program's second all-time leading scorer in Brian O'Neill. It will replenish with eight new recruits -- three defensemen and five forwards -- to replace seven graduating seniors and an eighth spot vacated by freshman Adam Thompson, who left school back in September.

One recruit who won't be in the class is Milford resident and Avon Old Farms defenseman Colin Sullivan. A draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens last June, Sullivan had planned to play a season of Junior hockey next winter before enrolling at Yale. He changed his mind on Juniors in February. Since Yale's incoming class had already been filled, Sullivan informed Yale he would be re-opening his recruitment. Boston College is believed to be at the top of his list.

Here is the list of who is expected to arrive, though still unofficial:

Matt Beattie, RW, Phillips Exeter: A 6-foot-3 forward from New Jersey emerged as a star this winter as one of the top scorers in New England Prep hockey. Drawing NHL interest. Picked Yale over Harvard and Princeton.

Charles Orzetti, LW, Surrey (BCHL): At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, Orzetti, a New Jersey native who went out to B.C. this season, finished with 19 ponts in 39 games.

Carson Cooper, C, Fort McMurray (AJHL): Enjoyed solid production with 59 points in 49 regular season games as well as 14 more in eight playoff games.

Cody Learned, RW, Junior Bruins (EJHL): The 5-foot-9, 175-pound New Hampshire native finished season with 14 goals and 50 points and seven points in four playoff games.

Stu Wilson, LW, Cedar Rapids (USHL): A 5-9, 164-pound wing from Rochester, N.Y., Wilson had 21 points in 39 regular season games.

Mitch Witek, D, Waterloo (USHL): The Illinois resident, a Junior teammate of current Yale freshman Anthony Day, finished with 16 assists and a +9 rating for the season.

Ryan Obuchowski, D, Indiana (USHL): Detroit native played for former Yale assistant Kyle Wallack in Indiana this year, and finished with five goals and 13 points

Rob O'Gara, D, Milton Academy: Like Beattie, an All-New England prep school pick this winter. Drafted by the Boston Bruins last June. At 6-foot-3 and pushing 200 pounds, should be an immediate contributor in New Haven.

Re: Yale Hockey2012 Off Season Thread

Looks like another good class. Yale appears to be well on the way to achieving sustainable excellence. They are losing another group of significant senior players, but the rising senior class is not that large this time around so they may be entering another strong cycle.

Re: Yale Hockey2012 Off Season Thread

Should be interesting to see who is named captain of next season's team. Rising seniors are Balch, Dueck, Lags, Miller, Malcolm, and Maricic. Its not practical for a goalie to be captain so that leaves 4 candidiates. Any thoughts on the likely Yale 2012-2013 captain?

I like Balch for his tenacity, don't really know the player personalities though. It is usually announced at the team banquet at Ingalls, anyone have any info on that event?

If you are still missing Yale hockey, Sean Backman and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers will be taking on Brian O'Neill and the Manchester Monarchs on Sunday at 3pm at Webster Bank Arena in BPT.

I agree with you on Balch but I wonder if a player who has only started for one season consistently would be named captain?

Justin Smith of RPI did not play consistently in any of his four seasons, yet was an assistant captain this past year (meaning he still didn't play regularly, even with a letter on his chest)

Ran into Coach Allain at the Sound Tigers game yesterday. Had a nice conversation and was informed that the banquet date has not been set yet. Some current Yale players in attendance as well. No points by O'Neill or Backman. O'Neill was handed his head on a plate behind the goal on one shift, I had not been to an AHL game in quite some time and I could not believe how much faster and violently everything took place compared to the college game. Gonna half to get back there for the playoffs. My buddy Paul also pointed out that the was another former Eli on the ice, David Meckler, he is the all time leading scorer for the Monarchs. A little trivia.

Played one season at Yale University…Entered the Bulldogs history books when he scored the shorthanded game-winner in the fifth overtime against Union College on March 4, 2006, in the first round of the 2005-06 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Hockey League playoffs in what is the longest game in NCAA history
