  • tUMD @ UNO: On Friday, Janurary 13th UMD will disappoint 16,000 Maverick Fans

UMD is coming off a sweep of WMU on the road. They bring their 16 game unbeaten streak to Omaha for their first visit as a WCHA foe. tUMD has not lost on the road since since Feb 25th.

UNO is making this their Super Bowl and is hoping to sell out the rink. As of today they still have 4,000 seats left. Will they sell that many in time? UNO had the last weekend off and played the last weekend in Dec against Quinnipiac.

I am hopeful that UMD can ruin UNO's plans on Friday on national television. This will be a tough series for UMD to keep their streak going.

Should be a **** good time! In the past, UNO has played well on home ice under Blais when a big name has come in. I freaking cannot wait. Dont have the energy right now to figure out the last time a #1 came into Omaha and what happened. GO MAVS!

I remember the days when tUMD's Super Bowl would be like this coming weekend... feels good to have moved on from that point in our program's history.

I am excited to watch on NBC Sports.

        A split would be nice.

            Game on, I see.

One thing my dad always used to say about streaks, the longer they go on, the more likely they are to end.

I have not seen UMD this year. However, I will say that I think UMD is overvalued at #1 and UNO is undervalued at # whatever they are depending on what ranking you are looking at. "Others receiving votes" or #17 if you like INCH's power rankings.

As far as tickets are concerned, this is the 3rd year of "sell out this or that game" for UNO. The promo has been done in February both previous times. The first year, it was "Sell out Ohio State". Last year it was "Sell out Wisconsin". Didn't get there either time:

            http://www.selloutduluth.com/sellout-history.htm

The advance sales for this year's version are well ahead of the two previous years. The counter on the school's web site has not been updated since Friday morning. The Centurylink Center (The Clink) seats 16,680 for hockey. As I write this, Ticketmaster is only showing 733 seats left on their web site for Friday night:

            http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/06...4&minorcatid=9

However, I am pretty sure the school had been and still is holding a good 3000 or so back for sale in the online promo they were running themselves for seats to this game. I have a feeling they will rerun the special they had going (which ended last Thursday or Friday) probably starting tomorrow. With the BCS title game out of the way after tomorrow night, the local media here will also really start to zero in on UNO Hockey, which is something they always seem to "discover" once the calendar year and football season ends around here. I'm pretty confident they'll get the place sold out this time. How often does the consensus #1 team in the country come to town, anyway? I am wracking my brain trying to remember when and if this has happened before for UNO. Can somebody help me out there?

This series makes or breaks UNO's season, IMHO. I want at least a split. Ask North Dakota fan what a raucous place The Clink can be when there was "only" 11,000+ in the building for our Friday night home game with them last year. Best atmosphere I have ever seen at a UNO game (with apologies to the Bowling Green play-in night, UNO fans).

As for UNO. Our whole "problem" and season so far this year can be summed up in one word. Youth. The faster we grow up the farther we will go. Coach Blais says that practices have been "outstanding". This is from a guy not real given to hyperbole.

Can't wait. Let's get it on.

That wasn't what I was getting at. Clearly, they are. Now.

I am thinking more along the lines of what you guys lost after last season and the improbability (to me, anyway) that you're going to keep this up based on that. Here, I'll let one of your own explain what I mean. Cut and pasted right from tUMD Penalty Box home page:

"UMD is not UND/BU/BC/UMTC. We don't "reload," we flat out don't have that kind of recruiting power. UMD comes into the season losing forwards Mike Connolly (professional,) Justin Fontaine, and Kyle Schmidt (local hero for life) to graduation. On the blue line UMD was hurt in my opinion even more. With the loss of Justin Faulk, (professional) Mike Montgomery, Trent Palm, and Chad Huettel to graduation. 3 of those guys were every game players. That is a lot to give up when you aren't bringing in blue chippers to replace them."

                and:

"So where will we finish? Well, I see us as a 5th place team. Like I said we lost too much. It will go DU, CC, UND, Gophers (puke) and UMD. UNO is right there, in fact UNO, UMD and the gophers will fight out those 4-6 spots."

That line of thinking is kind of where I'm coming from. Heck, maybe you actually have lightning in a bottle, but one of the shining beacons of your fandom doesn't even think so. Listening to him, you guys have overachieved.

The truth is always somewhere in the middle.

I think UNO is undervalued since their remaining schedule is very favorable. Six road games left, with the toughest series at Colorado College. UNO plays UMD, Gophers and Denver at home -- that's three of the top five teams, and UNO is tough to beat at home. Nobody has swept us at home since Dean Blais arrived and it hasn't happened at all since the '08-'09 season. UNO is a young team playing a ton of underclassmen and if young players have any talent, those sorts of teams tend to improve as the season wears on and be at their best at the end. We hope. In my book, one of the big equalizers that we have is the guy behind the players on the bench.

You guys may very well win the MacNaughton Cup but it wouldn't surprise me at all if you don't, too. Considering what you lost, if you do, then Sandelin is going to be a deserving candidate for the National Coach of the Year Award.

By the way, I see you have Alabama-Huntsville coming to Amsoil after your visit here. Uh-oh.

                We're warming up our cowbells.

So... you're taking something DHG said on October 2nd, before tUMD had played any games, as your idea of what this team is capable of? Dohkay. It's ok not to think they're #1, but to base that idea on some pre-season predictions is ricockulous.

I'm not worried about UAH. Unlike your team or Denver, tUMD will take them seriously. Just like they'll take this weekend's games seriously.

Wow, I'm honored that someone would see my opinion that highly, but as RWD said, this was before I got to see this team play 20 games. Since that time, I will say this "This UMD team, is a better "team" than last years squad." Due to them not having that top line, they have 3 lines that can score, and 3 D-pairings that are all pretty equal. This team is the class of the WCHA and right now it's not close. UMD is a kicked puck in their own net to only losing 4 points total in the WCHA at this point. UMD's 2 league loses were both by 1 goal and came down to the wire. I would say if UMD were to play that team again at home this weekend, you'd see different results.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised by a split. But, UNO better find a way to take a 2-3 goal lead into the 3rd period each night, otherwise it is over. UMD own's 3rd periods.

Seriously? Those box scores you're looking at must really jump off the page if you're able to form an opinion on a team without having seen them play even once.

Yes the Bulldogs lost a lot of scoring from last year and yes we historically haven't been in the same recruiting stratosphere as some of the bigger names. What we have is something that other teams do not have. We have a group of very dedicated and focused players who believe in this team. In addition, I'm hearing something that I've seen no one else talk about. I've noticed and others have also noticed how our forward play has improved over the last couple of seasons. My belief and the belief of many insiders is this improved play at forward is the result of Derek Plante working with the forwards. He may not be the best recruiter but he is absolutely the best on-ice coach of forwards we've ever had IMO. If you don't believe me, ask the players. He is a big reason for us leading the country in scoring this year in spite of having lost a lot of scorers from last year's team.

Beating WMU soundly convinced me. The Dogs are the team to beat in Division I, full stop. Should be fun to watch, if not necessarily to be a UNO partisan.

One does not have to witness the crime to be a good detective.

Seriously, I wasn't necessarily passing MY judgement off on the Bulldogs. And I'm not trying to take shots at them. I probably didn't make that clear in my original post. I based my "opinion" about what I knew about their situation (player losses and newcomers), and what informed fans of the team had to say about them prior to the beginning of the season, which is relevant in my book given the somewhat modest expectations that UMD nation seemed to have, and not just limited to the blog I quoted earlier in the thread, either.

I think opinions interested observers formulated about the team before the season started are definitely relevant. If those things were true then there has to be some level of truth to them, now. Based on that, I think this team is either overachieving to some degree or a lot of fans got it very wrong before the season started. Either way, its a pleasant problem to have for UMD fan. Based on that, I just think it's logical to assume that UMD is going to incur some level of down-to-earth-itis at some point. Pure hypothesis on my part. I reserve the right to be wrong, too. If so, you can tell me what an idiot I am at season's end when you are hoisting the MacNaughton Cup or, hell, even another national championship trophy. I don't think I necessarily need to see them play to at least infer this much. I'm sure I'll have a much more informed opinion after seeing them twice this weekend.

The question is: "When does the streak end for tUMD?"

WMU was supposed to be a hostile, sellout environment to make it tough on tDogs. I only saw the scores, not the commentary but it appears tDogs weren't affected too much by the crowd at WMU. Will it be different at UNO this weekend with the predicted sellout? Hard to say. UNO is a decent, (currently)middle of the pack team that could surprise. Hard to say if tUMD will be affected by the crowd. Should be a fun series and I hope I can catch some of the game on TV Friday!
