Now you're off the deep end, we're in the top 10 in goals scored at 3.38 a game. http://www.uscho.com/stats/overall/d...men/2011-2012/ That's hardly having trouble putting the puck in the net. We also lead the nation in SHG, not that it's a very definitive representation of a powerful offense, but it's an offensive stat nonetheless.

I don't know how far the team could've run with a full roster, but I will say they were definitely starting to gel and get into a rhythm heading into the break. Even the loss to BC at home, they played good hockey against a BC team who was amped up to hell to beat us for a couple of periods before it was garbage time. We were definitely a contender for the HE RS and Tournament titles, especially considering Merrimack coming back to earth, and taking 4 of 6 points from first place BC. As we all know, if you get to the NCAA, a bounce here or there and you're in the Frozen Four. It was definitely foreseeable that this was an NCAA team at full strength, so who knows where they would've gone, and who knows how far they will now go. Need to shore up defensive miscues, stay out of the dam box, and hopefully continue to get solid goaltending.

Yeah I really don't think anyone could argue that offense was a problem for us in the first half. We took a hit for sure with Trivino and Coyle, but our competition in HE right now has been sliding too. MC is falling off a cliff right now (1 win in their last 5 games) as is BC (6 losses in 10 games and curiously they have only dropped 2 spots in the rankings). It seems that the competition has dropped a little going into the break. I say the loss of Coyle and Trivino cost us maybe 2 or 3 league wins which takes us from maybe 18-8-2ish to 16-11-1ish in league. That still should at least get BU home ice in the HE tourney. I'd say that an NCAA appearance is a 50-50 shot right now. I see BU finishing somewhere between 10th and 20th in the country. But who knows, they could take all this as motivation and finish in the top 5.

Or are the real pawns the colleges, who are being "used" by the players as a stepping stone to get to the pro ranks?

It appears that there is a lot of using going on both ways.

The "using" that the system was based on was that a student-athlete comes to school for four years, plays on the team for four years, leaves with a degree ... and then may embark on a pro career, be it in North America or Europe.
Now, there seem to be too many shortcuts that, in many cases, leaves both sides shorthanded.

The most recent BU player that I can look at that did it right was Brandon Yip. Stayed for four years, continued to improve and when it was time for the big show, he was ready with only a brief stop in the minors.
I think Colin Wilson also did it right. He left early because the money and opportunity were there for him.

Should Nick Bonino had come back for his senior year? David Warsofsky? Colby Cohen?
Would have been better served by staying for four years, professionally and personally?

Warsofsky seemed bored his junior year, and had regressed. So perhaps it was best that he left.
Cohen probably thought he had accomplished everything there was to accomplish in college, but he still could have learned some consistency on defense and perhaps made the jump after a big senior year. Same with Bonino.

Maybe college hockey, or specifically, college wasn't meant for Charlie Connolly. Or Chris Bourque.

While Parker, York, Berenson and Jackson may be the Kings of college hockey, they are also often used as pawns by 18 years looking for stepping stones.
I agree with a lot of what you said..But you have to understand that when Quinny left a lot of the D-Men did not feel very connected... He was the D-Man Guru and a HUGE loss... as far as used or being used.. I have one major issue with the Trivino loss. It was well known within BU Circles that Trivino had a serious drinking problem so much so that he always had an "escort". Surely Parker knew of this and even admitted so after the fact that Trivino needed help. I get you cannot "force" someone to enter rehab and get help, but just like this episode wherein he hit rock bottom and will probably mea culpa rehab etc..and end up playing for the Islanders the same should have been done at BU. Parker should have insisted he get help or suspend him.... One has to wonder if Trivino were not playing at the level he was what the case would be???

I'm not sure if I even trust overall numbers for first half statistics at this point. When they were on, they were on solid. When they weren't, they stunk beyond all measure. It sort of averaged out in the end but it's definitely worrisome. I'd say the defensive questions are more troubling than the offensive ones though. Having games where we'd give up the goat and let in 5+ was just crushing.

Any update on what Trivino's next steps are going to be (hockey-wise, not legal-wise).

I imagine it will be based on the result of his case. He can't very well play in the NHL if he's in jail can he. Though I would bet he will be in the Islander's system come September.

The optimistic part of me says that considering how absolutely mediocre all of college hockey has been this season, this could actually be possible even after losing Coyle and Trivino. There are only about 2-3 teams right now that I would actually fell confident betting money on to make the FF.

The main issue with BU early in the season was motivation. If they were playing someone that they thought was good - UNH, Denver, BC - they showed up to play. If it was some team that they didn't respect - PC, Holy Cross, Lowell - they almost took the night off.

That seemed to straighten itself out after getting shelled at Lowell. And if it hasn't, then without Trivino and Coyle, they need to know that they can't take anyone lightly.
If everyone shows up to play following the key player losses, the dynamic of the team will have changed, and maybe even for the better.

How many NHL Draft picks are on the BU roster? Even with Coyle (a 1st) and Trivino (a 2nd), there still aren't many (if any, in HE) with more draft choices in the squad.
Quality has been lost, but others can step it up, make up the difference, and perhaps even have more cohesion as a team.

We will see. Oh, and Millan has to continue to play well and not take games off.

If this team keeps winning, I suspect that we will se more contributions from the freshmen - Rodrigues, Hohmann, and Privitera. Rodrigues looked pretty awesome at Maine. I would love to see him shine on national TV tonight.

Its really too bad that, although they picked a great pair of teams to show on this national NYE broadcast, both teams are missing high quality players. Personally I don't care if BU gets chosen for these games, as long as it is a game that will get people interested in college hockey. I hope that the game will be good even without those high profile players out at the WJC.

Of the sixteen who aren't going out, four of us will be watching at my house, flipping over to the NHL channel during the breaks, to see the the WJC. Happy New Year everyone.
