  • Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

Interesting trivia from the Anchorage newspaper:
The 12 goals the Seawolves gave up over the weekend are the most they have surrendered in a series since giving up 14 at Michigan Tech in a pair of losses -- 9-0 and 5-3 -- on Nov. 27-28, 2006.
Huskies are very intelligent and trainable. Huskies make an excellent jogging companion, as long as it is not too hot. Grooming is minimal; bathing is normally unnecessary.

Regarding home ice, I saw this link on the UW thread. What was I doing there? I don't really know, but I got something out of it.

according to that we have a ~33% chance of home ice. seems a little low but with our schedule, not all that surprising.

It hasn't been updated with Saturday's results yet, but I doubt the numbers will change much.

Excerpt from today's Mel Pearson Show:

Dirk: One [emailed question] says, "How much can you judge a college hockey team based on NHL-draft[ed] players?"
Mel: You can't. Short and sweet. I think Minnesota had twenty-some last year, and they had a tough year. So you can't judge that just strictly on draft picks. A lot of teams take older kids in their recruiting, that's by design, and they don't have a lot of draft picks, where teams like Minnesota and Michigan and Boston College take the younger kids and they seem to get drafted. Obviously they're talented, they have that "potential", but still you have to go do it on the ice. And you need team chemistry, and you need guys to play as a team and not just a group of individuals.
Dirk: The follow-up question is, "Will there be more NHL draft players at Tech in the future?"
              Mel: Yes.
              Dirk: Yes?
Mel: Yes. Part of that is where we're going to recruit, who we're going to recruit, our philosophy there, and I think also NHL teams are enjoying the way we're playing, our different style, which translates more to the next level. So we're going to get some talented kids and we're going to coach them up and let 'em play and I think that'll attract NHL people to draft more of our players.

Adding on to redwing's post, some other notes from the Mel pearson show. It's also posted on the Tech website if you want to listen.

Not the pretiest of weekends, they don't ask how you won, just how many wins you have
Important Weekend, a lot of pressure on our team to win the games and we came through

                Friday's UAA game:
Real good 1st period even though we gave up first goal
Worked on goals in the crease quite a bit, wanted to be hungry around the net
Chad Pietila 3x1, Rix made the pass early to Chad, Reddick in the middle kept going to the net bringing the Dman with him
Liked the PP on Friday, liked breakout, created a couple 2x1 just couldn't finish
The 4th line, not a checking line, pushing them to score, Rix and Reddick might score more goals than anyone in practice, good releases shooting the puck, they do it with speed
Mel will put that line against anybody when he has last change
Damon Whitten has done a great job preparing our PK, we were good friday, better on Saturady, Robinson has to be best PKer and he did well

                On Sat win:
We were ready to play, could've scored a few more goals on some of our better chances
4th line gets first two goals, and got us off to a good start
Seawolves got pushed around a bit in the 1st, they came out hard in the 2nd
Mel didn't like winning 3-0 and on a 3x1 break one of our Dman decided to jump in on the rush, and that led to UAA 2x1 the other way and they score, gave them an easy goal
UAA didn't get many grade A shots in 3rd period
0-7 on the PP, little disapointed, early we had a couple good ones, middles ones not good, no flow and were outworked by uAA PK, their goalie also made some big saves

If season ended we'd be hosting UND, it was a lofty goal by the team to get home ice, and they're getting exited. LOng ways to go with tough road trips, we've put ourselves in a good position.
At UND, Duluth, CC are not easy trips, also Mankato.
Mel's confident we can play against anybody

Questions form email box, in addition to the one redwing posted:

Are you concerned about lack of PP scoring, and will it be more important against better teams?
Yes, but at the same time Mel likes what they're doing.

                Happy with Fillion?

Very happy, thrown into this situation, no college hockey expereince, played well. He has poise and he'll be a good hockey player.

Any comparison between Fillion and Seigo? He can see the ice like Seigo, he has a great stick, he'll be very good.

Seigo not getting a ton of points, is he doing little things not being noticed by people that are good?
He's playing much better than last year on defense. Also running our PP, he might be the 4th guy touching the puck, but he'll get his points. He's picking his spots better.

Does Fillion not being with the team at mid-season is there a chemistry concern?
No concern, real nice kid, good hockey player, no concerns at all.

On NMU this weekend, Saturday in Houghton:
We'll be much more prepared for this game, once of our worst starts of th year in Marquette
It'll be a whiteout, so please wear white, there will be a T-shirt giveaway for students, and a taligate starting at 5:30 at SDC
Mel thinks maybe some guys had one foot out the door, Mel wanted everyone on the bus heading back to Houghton, but a few guys pushed to leave for home right after Marquette, Mel learned his lesson
Loss and tied against State last weekend, Mel has watched tape, they're a good team, it'll be a hard fought battle
NMU is tied for 9th in PWR, 10-8-5
Might shorten bench becuase it's a one game weekend, not much else planned to be different

                Question for ticket giveaway:
How many goals has Tech scored against UAA this season? 18 goals

Looks like Tech is back under the radar, just where we like it. None of those rankings jinxes from earlier in the year. But seriously, Minnesota St with 4 votes??? If I was UAA, I'd be feeling under-appreciated.

I'm really glad to see that they're doing some outreach to the students and community like this and the Calumet scrimmage. Mel's doing a terrific job IMHO...

1993 was the year. They finished 4th in the standings, swept St. Cloud State (3–1, 6–5) then lost to Northern Michigan (3–4) at the Final Five.

With 11 wins, this is already the Techsters' sixth most successful season since the 1992–93 season.

(Thank you, 2010–11 Hockey Yearbook. When is the athletic department going to get around to posting this year's on the website??)

So basically, there are Tech students who weren't even born the last time Tech had home playoff ice.

Today is the second installment of Future Huskies where we have an in depth question and answer session with one of the committed recruits to get to know more about their decision to play for Michigan Tech and what they will bring to the Huskies. We'll try to get input from the MTU staff when allowed and talk to Junior or Midget coaches if we have to. Joe Schuldt is the featured in today's installment after I caught up with him during a recent Minnesota High School Hockey game in Minnetonka, Minnesota.
