In Tech alumni news, Andy Sutton joins the rush up ice and looking like a 50 goal scorer puts it in the back of the net against John Scott's Blackhawks.

I can't imagine the Huskies don't make double digit wins. and home ice is still in the mix.

Back from Detroit (a couple days ago now), and Detroit is still as big of a ****hole as I remembered. Burned out buildings, everything boarded up, absolutely dead downtown with the only places where people seem to be the casinos.... I noticed that one of the burned out buildings from last trip had been turned into an empty lot, so I guess that is improvement. And to be clear, I'm not saying that it was unsafe or I thought I was going to get stabbed, just that it looked like I walking through an episode of Life After People on History Channel. The walk to Joe Louis was so pathetic that it was comical, and the arena still has that permanent outhouse smell to it; I can't believe an NHL team plays there, much less a good NHL team, its actually pretty embarassing. With that said, we still found ways to have fun, so it wasn't a bad trip. The hotel was absolutely beautiful, the food was incredible, and I didn't lose any money playing blackjack.

Tech has too many forwards. I wouldn't be surprised to see some transfers after this year from guys that aren't happy about playing time.

This concept of having depth is pretty neat for a change, but I think it's time for a few of these guys who have been in and out of the lineup to step it up and earn steadier ice time down the stretch. Of course, the threat of a night in the press box if they have a bad game will still be there. As to who it will be, I don't particularly care, but someone's gotta do it.

Which reminds me - some of us were discussing at the GLI that with the tiny size of this year's senior class, and five (possibly more) players arriving next fall, more cuts might be made at the start of next season.

EDIT: Assuming there are no transfers of course. I hadn't thought about that possibility.

My guess is that there will be some players that won't be invited to "camp."

I must have missed that conversation, of course, I was only around your guys' group for a little bit on Thursday and between games on Friday.
I don't see how they can't cut more guys (or some guys transfer), they can't go on with having so many players sitting out, without the players getting frustrated and mad about not getting ice time. There is a happy medium roster size, that allows for flexibility and injuries, but also allows for adequate playing time for everyone who thinks he deserves it, right now Tech is on the too many players side of that line.

Now that Mel knows his players he'll probably spell it out for a few of them in March so they have time to consider pursuing other opportunities. I'm sure everyone involved finds that preferable to cuts.

For those that haven't had time to listen to the Mel Pearson show yet this week:

Mel was in studio and it now starts at 8:30ET and is 45 min long

                        GLI Against MSU:
We outshot them 7-0 early, and a penalty took wind out of sails
They scored and that set the tone for the first period
Good game, a lot of shots, not as many grade A chances as you would've liked
Palmosano got to see most of the shots, and he stopped them, need traffic and rebounds, need to battle in tough areas
Scoring is tough to teach, it's more natural, we're going back to basics to look for dirty goals
Josh didn't have a chance on either MSU goal
When you're not scoring, every little mistake is critical
Steve Shields informed Mel we've been in every game in the 3rd period, we're there, but need to take the next step
On 5x3 goal, Furne nice shots, he's a goal scorer, nice pass from D. Johnstone
Thought we might score on PP, good third period, MSU got some chances later one when we were pressing
Not getting the bounces we were getting earlier in the year, have to hang in there
NHL Scouts and other coaches told Mel our team was working very hard, just not finishing around the net
Have said it before, need to learn how to win in tight games against good teams, it's coming

Tommy Brown: Wanted to get Tommy in, find out where he's at
He had a good game, godo skater, has confidence, will give it his all
Good solid game, needs to build on that
He sat Saturday, concerned about conditioning for back to back games, same concern for C. Pietila
Jimmy played Friday and did a real good job
First time we've had everybody eligable and healthy to play, made some decision more difficult

                        Friday against BC:
Played a real good game, right there, 1-1 in third period
Carried play in 3rd period, allowed only 8 attempted shots on net, best period of tournament
BC PP Goal was quick, we've been playing from behind too much last few games
Rix's goal was some puck luck just inside blueline, Rix can shoot the puck, Mel is on Rix and McLeod, they can burry the puck, want to see it in a game
Blake Pietila 5 shots on goal in game, stepped up his game
Heartbreaking to have disallowed goal, whole team frustrated
Baker said it hit in his midesection, ref in bad position to see where it hits, he makes initial no-goal call, need good evidence to overrule, no good camera angles
Mel feels it should've been called a goal, then review to see if it can be overturned
BC's 2nd goal. Robinson would like to have it back, we were playign well, BC comes down and scores from a bad angle
Told kids to hold your heads high, played a good game against a really good hockey team

In Calumet this weekend, intrasquad game at the armory. 5:00 warmup, 5:15 puck drop, probably 25 min halfs
Keep the guys active, let people up in Calumet see the hockey team
Back when Mel played, they did it every year
Will sign some autographs after the game
It'll be good for some guys that are trying hard in pratcie, but not cracking the lineup to get some game experience, get to see Fillion play too
Mel will probably stay to watch the Calumet game, looking forward to it and hope people in Calumet will support the game
The player are excited, winners maybe wont have to skate as much on Monday, want to make it competative

                        Questions from listeners:

How did he like line combinations at GLI? Liked them, generated scoring opportunities. Chad Pietila looked good and will only get better. Tanner wasn't 100%, but he played well.
Really Like Rix-McLeod on a line, good work ethic and hustle. Lines will continue to be tweaked.

Jimmy Davis - He did make a turnover on Friday. Overall he had a good game, he's come a long way. He'll continue to get better.

Justin Fillion - Haven't seen him yet. He'll practice all week and next week. Something like a Seigo, offensive defensemen. It'll be interesting to see how he adjusts, could take time or could take right off.

Any new recuirt comments? Only on kids that have signed, picked up a few since signing date. Excited aboug the group. Good hockey players and good students. Jujhar and Alex Petan are top 7 in scoring in BCHL.
They've done well, once kids sign and commit want them to continue to try to be best player in the league. Phoenix has played well lately, Shields can't wait to get a hold of him.

Goals are at a premium lately, what has changed? Can't force it, need to have instincts. We'll do simple things, changing shooting angle, taking a step across the net. Need to do battle drills in front of the net. The offense will come.

Seems like a long time since we've been at home, need to reestablish our home ice presence.

As always, Dirk wants email questions, dj@themix93.com anytime during the week.

C.Pietila bumped McCloud to the fourth line so unless this changes I would guess he's not battling for a spot. I would guess there is one open spot on forward. As far as D goes it sounds like the expectation is for Fillion to assume a full time spot if he's capable. My guess is that beside Seigo, the rest will be open for sitting occasionally to give the remaining some game time here or there.

I'm reminded of a conversation I had in November with someone who was on the Tech roster with Mel back in the day (and is out of the area, nothing to do with the team since). He said Mel would never dazzle you with his skill or speed, but was an "instigator" and always had a knack for being in the right position to get his stick on the puck. I got the impression of Mel as a player who PO'd a lot of the opposing players and knew how to score those dirty goals.

My personal opinion but Reddick played well on friday, I think we will see him a lot, especially away at big ice teams. In fact the forth line played really well on friday. Chad played ok friday, not that great thursday. I think he will get a solid look and has a spot for a few games anyway. I'd guess McCadden will be in at times too, given his skill on faceoffs. I'd like to see Lickteig get better because he has a ton of talent but defensively he's not doing it. On defense it's hard to say but sounds like Fillion will be pretty good. Brown was average I thought on friday. I think he was minus one for the game.Davis was good and will be a great player down the line.
Overall will depend on the rink and the circumstances.
