For those that are interested and not able to attend the games in Platty I contacted WIRY Radio (wiry.com) to get their broadcast schedule. As in the past WIRY only broadcasts the PSU games.

This tourney has been on my list for a while..I mean what other time can you see 4 teams go head to head who have collectively won the National Championships 9 out of the 10 years that the league has been in existence.

Na...got some golf to play yet....supposed to be warm this weekend. Give me a shout if you need a place en route. Also, watch where you sit at Stafford...dont want to get mixed up in our "Special People Section"...!!

Cardinal/Panther women's hockey tourney attracts 4 of top 8 teams in division

PLATTSBURGH — It's not the NCAA Division III Tournament.

But, this weekend's Cardinal/Panther Classic at the Stafford Ice Arena features an early-season showdown of four women's hockey teams with high expectations in 2011-12.

Middlebury College (2-0-0) is currently ranked third, host Plattsburgh State (5-0-1) fourth, Amherst College (2-0-0) seventh and Elmira College (5-1) eighth in the latest USCHO.com Poll.

So far this season, the four teams have combined for a 14-1-1 record.

"You have four teams who are always in the NCAA Tournament picture," Plattsburgh State head coach Kevin Houle said. "It's one of the best tournaments in the country.

"Middlebury and Amherst are from the NESCAC and they just started their season last weekend. Middlebury was in the Final Four last year. And, Elmira always has a strong team."

Today's first-round action has Amherst taking on Plattsburgh State at 4 p.m., followed by Elmira against Middlebury at 7 p.m.

Sunday, the third-place game is set for 2 p.m. and the championship game at 5 p.m.

Last year, Amherst recorded a 1-0 victory over Elmira in the title contest and Plattsburgh State a 5-0 decision over Middlebury in the third-place game.

In the opening round, Amherst defeated the Cardinals in a shootout after the two teams played to a 1-all tie in the regulation game, while Elmira skated to a 2-1 victory over Middlebury.

"We've talked about it," Houle said "We want to get back to the final game of the tournament. We haven't done so the past two years."

This weekend's tournament could also have NCAA Tournament ramifications down the road.

"These games can help you and also hurt you," Houle said. "But, we haven't talked about that as a team."

Amherst vs. Plattsburgh State

The Lord Jeffs began their season last weekend with a home-and-home sweep of Hamilton College, winning 5-1 on the road and then 4-1 at home.

Josie Fisher, Geneva Lloyd and Melissa Martin have accounted for six of Amherst's nine goals with two each.

The Cardinals are coming off last Saturday's 7-0 non-conference win at Bowdoin College.

Plattsburgh State broke open a close game with six goals in the third period, with four of them being scored by Chelsea VanGlahn.

"The Bowdoin game was definitely a test for us," Houle said. "It wasn't really a 7-0 game. It was a 1-0 game for 40 minutes. But, a lot of good came out of the game.

"We know we can still play better in the first 40 minutes. We have been scoring a lot of goals in the third period of games, but I would like to see us finish earlier in the game. There's no easy road, however, and we have to battle through adversity."

Teal Gove (5-7-12), VanGlahn (8-3-11), Emma Rutherford (6-3-9), Jenny Kistner (3-6-9) and Jordan Caldwell (1-7-8) are the leading scorers for the Cardinals.

Sydney Aveson (4-0-0) and Ally Ross (1-0-1) have done the work between the pipes for Plattsburgh State.

"After winning a big game on the road last weekend, the girls get to come home and play in a great tournament like this," Houle said. "Everyone should be excited to play."

Elmira vs. Middlebury

The Soaring Eagles, who compete in the ECAC West along with the Cardinals, opened their season with a 4-2 loss to Norwich University.

Since then, however, Elmira recorded road wins over Manhattanville (7-3), two against Cortland State (8-1, 9-1) and recent home victories over Utica (2-1, 5-2).

Alex Bresler leads the Soaring Eagles in goals with six, while Tori Charron has scored five goals and Tanis Lamoureux, four.

The Panthers got their season started on the road a weekend ago with wins at Colby College (3-2 in overtime, 6-0).

Katie Sullivan accounted for three goals in the two games, while Maggie Melberg and Madeline Joyce added two apiece.

This is the second year in a row the tournament has been played at the Stafford Ice Arena because Middlebury College is hosting the men's PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout this weekend.

Amherst denies Cardinals again
For 3rd straight year, Lord Jeffs beat PSU in Cardinal/Panther Classic first round

PLATTSBURGH — For the third year in a row, Amherst College has denied the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team a berth in the championship game of the Cardinal/Panther Classic.

A third-period rally fell a goal short Saturday as Plattsburgh State dropped a 3-2 decision at the Stafford Ice Arena.

Amherst will play Elmira College in today's 5 p.m. title game. The Soaring Eagles advanced with a shootout win over Middlebury College in the second game of the day. Plattsburgh State and Middlebury will tangle in the 2 p.m. third-place contest.

The Cardinals (5-1-1) found themselves down, 3-0, before scoring goals two minutes apart in the third period. The Lord Jeffs (3-0-0), however, were able to hold on the rest of the way.

"I thought our effort was good and we had a lot of chances," Plattsburgh State head coach Kevin Houle said. "Their goalie (Sinead Murphy) made some big saves and we also hit the crossbar.

"Amherst is an aggressive team and they play hard. If you take a second off on a shift against them, you can find the puck in your net. We paid the price today a couple of times when they scored and we have to play well for every second of every shift."

Melissa Martin gave the Lord Jeffs a 3-0 lead 4:54 into the third period with a hard slapshot from straight on between the circles past Plattsburgh State goaltender Sydney Aveson.

But, Plattsburgh State was finally able to get the puck past Murphy and make a game of it.

Ashton Hogan, with the Cardinals skating on a powerplay, sent a puck in front from the corner and it reached the far side of the net where Morgan MacInnis was there to tap it in at 10:59.

Then, shortly after at 12:55, Jenny Kistner sent the puck towards the net and Chelsea VanGlahn deflected it home to bring Plattsburgh State to within 3-2.

The Lord Jeffs, however, killed off a Plattsburgh State powerplay that started with 6:46 remaining in regulation and held on after the Cardinals pulled Aveson for an extra attacker in the late going.

Neither team scored in the first period, despite both taking 11 shots on goal.

"We had two bad shifts in the first period, but we had some great chances to score," Houle said.

"I felt we were able to put pressure on all game long. If we could have scored a goal or two early on in the game, it would have been a different game."

The second period was not a good one on the scoreboard for the Cardinals, who also took four penalties that didn't help their cause any.

The Lord Jeffs went in on a 2-and-1 early in the period and Ellen Swiontkowski tapped a rebound past Aveson at the 1:57 mark to open the scoring.

Murphy preserved the 1-0 lead when she stopped Hogan on a breakaway later in the period. Then, the Cardinals had to kill off a two-player skating disadvantage for 49 seconds to stay within one.

But, with 2:18 left in the stanza, Amherst made it 2-0 when Barrett McBridge scored from in close.

Murphy finished with 29 saves and Aveson 24 as the Cardinals held a 31-27 advantage in shots, including a 12-4 edge in the third period.

Elmira 0, Middlebury 0 (OT)

The Panthers (2-0-1) scored first in the penalty shot shootout, but the Soaring Eagles (5-1-1) tallied the next two goals to prevail.

Elmira held a 29-15 advantage in shots on goal, including a 15-3 edge in the third period.

Middlebury's Annabelle Jones played well in net, stopping all 29 shots that came her way. Lauren Sullivan was also strong in the Elmira nets with 15 saves, including eight in the first period.

The game officially goes into the books as a tie.

Looking forward to another day of superior hockey.
I was surprised at how far along the Lord Jeffs were for so early in their season. Midd (appears to need some time for the offense to gel, but always plays well in their own zone) held their own with Elmira (who were really pressing for the score as the 3rd went along against Midd) and Plattsburgh showed a lot of poise coming back from 3 goals down.
