I've attended one Michigan game at Yost since 2005, the Minnesota Showcase game in 2009. It was a dark time in Michigan sports: Michigan's football team had just finished the season under a cloud of incompetence, the hockey team couldn't score goals, and Robbie Czarnik had left the hockey team for the OHL.

Then the bomb dropped that Jack Campbell would play his next two years for Windsor in the OHL. The mood at Yost was sullen, and though Michigan smoked Minnesota at the game and I had a great time, there was no mistaking the worrisome trend the team was taking.

That feeling would continue throughout the season, as Michigan played with maddening inconsistency (or was it mediocrity?) and appeared destined for an early golf season, its best players mysteriously ineffective and its best recruits playing Major Junior. When Brian Hogan pulled his groin, it only seemed to confirm the doom of the team.

We know what has happened since then.

So I've guiltily enjoyed some Schadenfreude following Campbell's glorious OHL career. He was traded from Windsor early this season to rebuild Windsor's draft status, and wound up not in a glamorous place like London or Ottawa but in Sault St. Marie. It appears that Windsor GM Warren Rychel couldn't get him out of town fast enough, and after posing an .894 save percentage last year, you can see why. Campbell has been, by all reports, a great locker room guy in the Soo, but alas his team is horribly mismanaged and he will not make the playoffs.

So on the NOOF message board discussing the Greyhounds-Spitfires game, I ran across this gem:

So wait, you're telling me that Jack Campbell, who likely will be in the AHL next year, likely spent his final OHL game allowing 9 goals in a win?

Perfect

Yes, I think so too.

Edit: I'm having trouble remembering dates. It was 2005, not 1995, that I stopped going to games at Yost regularly when I moved.

Here's a link to the thread I described. It describes a 10-9 barnburner.

Didn't mean to start an argument, but it is curious to be the only one with the late game. Oh, the NBC games, the DU UND game had more viewers than the UM ND game.

FS- see you in Tampa. Should I try to talk you into the cruise? ;)

I would love to, but I am in school, and had to work things around with my professors to have two days off to go to the Frozen Four. I'm with Priceless up in the suite, so perhaps we'll have to get together again. I wonder if co14ers is making the trip?

It would be good to see him, too- I've not met priceless, yet- gotta be in that mid game on Thursday. Wasn't there a meet up thread somewhere?

I think so. Perhaps we can find that thread and continue our discussion there.

Anyway, good luck to Michigan this weekend in Green Bay.

It's official, I'll be taking my daughters to their first ever Michigan game in any sport this Friday: four tickets purchased at the Resch Center. My wife and I will make the trip Friday, stay the night, and head back to Duluth Saturday morning to resume my standard weekend duties before hopefully getting a chance to see another Michigan game on TV in the evening.

My daughters already know The Victors, but they've never heard a Michigan band play in person. Should be good.

In other news, contributors to this thread are getting a lot of play in the Michigan blogosphere this week. Much of my experience recounted elsewhere owes a debt to USCHO posters past and present who got me more closely tied to the sport, and in the case of Lord Sidious and TA Jen, connected me with the ticket I used the weekend in question. Also, a lot of us got together at Gallagher's after the DU game, IMO the best gathering we ever had. At least, that I went to.

Not trying to overlook Cornell or anything...but who do you guys think will come out on top of the other game? I feel that DU and Ferris stack up pretty evenly, and it should be a pretty good game.

Can't wait for Friday!!!!!

I'm forwarding this note to Child Services, because I'm certain that actions such as you've described are considered child abuse under Wisconsin law.

Had no idea that Wisconsin was that against advanced placement programs...

Guess we'll just have to speak slowly to everone there. ;)

Good grief. That entire weekend was an incredible amount of fun. *shakes head and smiles*

Good times. I think like 14 of us were at Gallaghers or something. We were in rather good moods.

Hammer, any chance you're making the trip to GB?

After the Air Force debacle a few years ago I take no one lightly but I think Denver takes out Ferris, and pretty easily too. A buddy of mine from Minnesota says that DU is very streaky but when they are on they can beat anyone.

That being said, I don't want to play Ferris again. Even though we had our way with them early this season, it's very unlikely to beat a team 3 straight times in a season.

Whoops, forgot what you do to bring home the bacon. Too bad.

I'll cheer for Ferris for you. On Friday only.

Does anyone know what the deal is with the DU goalie situation? I would assume they go with Brittian, but I guess the stats (GP) are kind of missleading. I know he played an unreal game against Duluth, and I'd assume they'd go with him from here on out, but I guess I don't really know.

Maybe I should be posting this under a DU thread...I'm completely ignorant.

I remember that '02 regional. That was my sophomore year, and the first regional I ever attended. Wasn't playing in the band due to the 25 member NCAA limit. My friend and I bought tix in the North end. I can still picture the grin on Ortmeyer's face after he scored that goal. He was laying in the goal and smiling. It was loud and awesome.

From what I've read from DU posters, they don't know who Gwoz will start.

We never had 25 people in the hockey band when I was there. Unless of course Dan Meyers was bringing beer to rehearsal. ;)
