  • UNE Recruiting Violations

    http://www.pressherald.com/news/ncaa...011-03-27.html

It will be interesting to see what the NCAA does here. Looks like the team has already paid the price this season by losing some of these players.

Or Buff State (who got decent AFTER the whole scandal)...

Geneseo could be argued either way.

Conclusion: These teams DEFINITELY benefited greatly from their "decision" to award creative financial aid packages "designed" to improve their hockey teams

Are you Platty fans insinuating something about a certain program on the shore of Lake Ontario?

After some of the members of the Platty fan base's obsession with it, he may not be that paranoid...

There was a point this year where you couldn't say anything Oswego without a Platty fan chiming in about the D-I transfers or the foreign aid packages.

Well yeah, that was dumb as hell, but as you said, at least you had to say something Oswego to provoke it. The only mention of Plattsburgh in Cards_rule's post is in his username.

                    Re: UNE Recruiting Violations

this whole issue appears to a lot about nothing as far as I am concerned.
I am somewhat convinced, with no more than anecdotal evidence, that if the NCAA were to fully examine every DIII hockey program they could/would find extraordinary financial aid and admission inconsistencies relative to their non atletic student population, and this includes the NESCAC's,primarily on the admissions front.
colleges, athletic departments, coaches will do what is necessary and what they can get away with to further their athletic reputations, if they(Administration) decide it is important.
this is why the whole discussion relative to the athletic "purity" of DIII is absurd at any level. the NCAA likes to put square pegs into square wholes but the pegs are becoming increasingly round every day.
If a college gives a student athlete monies that are not entirely academic( this is also a slippery slope) or demonstrated financial aid related AND this financial aid is not exactly comparable to aid given to a non athlete, is it not an "atheleic scholarship"?
I think it is and I think it is becoming more prevalent in DIII sports, including hockey.
The NCAA needs to get their arms around this now, or just forget it.

                      Re: UNE Recruiting Violations

Is there really any purity in college ice hockey today since ice hockey is the only sport that allows players to take several post graduate years and enter school as a 21 year old Freshman. Junior hockey is about to be one waterdowned league with no longer using A, B, and C Classification amongst it's junior teams it will be just all one level at Tier III. USA hockey and NCAA is part of the problem of screwing up the hockey in this country. If you are going to allow 21 year olds to play then what is the difference if you allow major jr players to play? If they just want more of a ratio of U.S. players on the roster, then just make the rule and be done with it. These Coaches and schools have done nothing wrong other than scout and recruit in their immediate area players they felt would help their program while receiving a quality education with the help of an International Incentive or award, in the case of Potsdam it was open to any International students on campus. Everything for them should be dismissed. If on top of it they were giving free room and board like some of the other schools then there is an issue.

How is it that NCAA football, baseball and basketball coaches don't shine the light on NCAA hockey's fortune to not require these "student-athletes" to attend college during their "amateur" junior hockey careers? USHL, NAHL and the other leagues all finagle billeting, playing fees, sponsorships, advertising etc. to avoid concerns. Unfortunately it is quite rare for an 18 year old true freshman to be given the chance to play against the much more common 25 year old senior that repeated a grade in high school, then might have done a PG year and then played 2-3 years of juniors. The system FORCES kids to forgo education to play juniors to play NCAA hockey. It may take the college presidents to wise up and eliminate this vestige. What a shame.

He sat out a year because he couldnt come up with $8,000? Seems odd to me. So he is already paying 32K but couldnt get the 8K once fund was reduced?
Ive been out of the school money loop since 97, is it that hard to get aid these days?
