    Clarkson fires head coach Roll
THREE LOSING SEASONS: Assistant Drechsel out, too

After three straight losing seasons Clarkson University has fired George Roll as men's hockey coach and is also letting associate head coach Greg Drechsel go, Clarkson announced Monday night.

Assistant coach Chris Rogles, who joined the program midway through the 2009-10 season, will remain on the staff to work with whoever is hired to replace Roll.

Roll finishes his eight-year stint at Clarkson with a 130-142-33 record. He won one ECAC Hockey regular season title and one tournament title and led the Golden Knights to two NCAA Tournament appearances.

Candidates to replace Roll could include former Clarkson assistant coaches Ron Ralston and Casey Jones as well as former Golden Knight player Phil Roy, who is the top assistant at Merrimack.

Ralston coaches the U.S. Under-18 team and Jones is the top assistant at Cornell.

Two of Roll's former players, Steve Zalewski and Grant Clitsome, have made appearances in the National Hockey League.

Roll served two stints at Clarkson. He was an assistant coach under Mark Morris from 1988-96 and was hired to replace Morris as head coach following the 2002-03 season.

In between his times at Clarkson, Roll coached SUNY Oswego's NCAA Division III program for seven years, leading the Lakers to the national championship game in his final season in 2002-03.

Under Roll, Clarkson improved from 12-17-3 to 18-18-5 in the 2003-04 season. The Golden Knights also made a playoff run that year, winning road series at Union and Cornell, then upsetting regular-season champion Cornell in the semifinals before losing to Harvard in the ECAC Hockey championship game.

Prior to the next year Roll landed an impressive recruiting class that eventually got the Golden Knights back into the national picture.

He brought in forwards Nick Dodge, Shawn Weller, Steve Zalewski and David Cayer, along with defenseman Grant Clitsome and goalie David Leggio.

After a dismal 13-23-3 season in Roll's second year, Clarkson improved to 18-17-3 in 2005-06 and then the following season the Golden Knights wnt 25-9-5, winning the ECAC Hockey Tournament before falling to Massachusetts in the NCAA Tournament.

In 2007-08 Clarkson went 22-13-4, won the ECAC Hockey regular season title and then defeated St. Cloud State for the program's first NCAA Tournament win since 1996. The run ended with a loss to Michigan in the quarterfinals.

The past three seasons, however, Clarkson failed to finish with a winning record.

The Golden Knights had a 10-19-7 record in 2008-09 and then fell to last place in the ECAC Hockey standings the following year, finishing with a 9-24-4 overall record.

This past season Clarkson showed improvement, finishing five spots higher in the standings and winning three straight games against rival St. Lawrence University, but wound up 15-19-2 overall after being upset at home by Harvard in the first round of the conference tournament.

Like Roll, Drechsel was also an assistant coach at Clarkson under Morris. He also worked for the University of Denver. He was scouting for the NHL's Los Angeles Kings when he returned to work for the university.
