  • Yale Off Season 2011

Now that we have had a week to digest the events of last Saturday, I thought it would be good to have a common thread for the post season. The senior class has started to disperse with Chris Cahill signing with the Milwaukee Admirals (Nashville Predators) of the AHL, Denny Kearney signing with the Springfield Falcons (Columbus Blue Jackets) of the AHL, and Jimmy Martin signing with the Reading Royals (Split Boston Bruins/Toronto Maple Leafs) of the ECHL.

Here is an article on Denny

KEARNEY SIGNS WITH SPRINGFIELD, ENJOYS MEMORABLE DEBUT

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- On day after signing with the Springfield Falcons, Yale forward Denny Kearney enjoyed a memorable professional debut, assisting on the game-winning goal in the Falcons' 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Bridgeport Friday in American Hockey League (AHL) action at the DCU Arena.

Donning jersey No. 33, Kearney finished with one assist and was plus-1 for the game. He signed an Amateur Tryout Agreement (ATO) Thursday with the Falcons.

Kearney joins Cam Atkinson, former RPI goaltender Allen York, former St. Lawrence forward Aaron Bogosian, Wade MacLeod, Paul Dainton and Anton Blomqvist as first-year players who have joined the Falcons during the month of March.
Also...Jimmy Martin was named 2nd team All-America by College Hockey News

Also...Former Bulldog Mark Arcobello has parlayed his strong play with the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL into a 2-yr contract with the Edmonton Oiler organization.

    Article here
The Edmonton Oilers have signed forward Mark Arcobello to a two-year entry-level contract, which is a tremendous accomplishment for the young man from Milford Connecticut. Arcobello played hockey in the U.S. high school system and was named to the 2005 All-State team, which then led him to Yale University where he scored 24 points in 29 games as an 18-year-old freshman. But that performance wasn't enough to get him drafted as an overager - his 5'9'' 165 lb. frame may also have played a role - and Arcobello spent the next three years at Yale earning his degree, and improving as a hockey player. In his last year, Arcobello scored 36 points in 34 games, but it wasn't enough to earn him an entry-level contract with any of the NHL's thirty teams, which is how he ended up with the Stockton Thunder of the ECHL.

Arcobello's numbers in Stockton really weren't that impressive for an undersized offense-first player. 20 points in 33 games in the ECHL isn't exactly inspiring, and his plus/minus rating of -2 is the fourth-worst on the club (five players are +10 or better). At that point, Arcobello must have felt like an NHL contract was a long way off, but with injuries mounting in Edmonton, and the Barons getting called to fill in with the big club, Arcobello got the call to Oklahoma City, and he's made the most of his opportunity.

In something of a surprise, Arcobello has actually increased his scoring pace since coming to the AHL with nine goals and seven assists in 21 games. He's taken 61 shots, so while a shooting percentage of 14.8% is high, it's not ridiculous either. His +2 rating also suggests that he's getting his head around the defensive side of the game at the AHL level. His play made enough of an impression on the coaching staff that they named him to the clear-day roster ahead of Philippe Cornet who had been with the team the entire year. Plus, Neal seems to really like him.

If I'm being totally honest, I don't think Arcobello has a very good chance at an NHL career. He's already 22 years old and while he's scored a bit at the AHL level, it would be a stretch to call him an impact player, and of course there are the concerns about size as well. As such, this contract strikes me as a bit of a waste for the Oilers, but at the same time, I can't help but be happy for Arcobello who's worked extremely hard to get to this point. And as much as I would consider myself a doubter, I'll be cheering for him to succeed.
We have a small but enthusiastic group of Yale hockey fans that came together on the forum. Let's stay in touch via this thread and look forward to another exciting year of Yale Hockey

Thanks for creating this thread, CGYF. Any news on the date of the team dinner/election of 2011-12 captain? And do we have a schedule for next season yet?

Another question: when our guys jump immediately to the pros, I assume they are required to withdraw from Yale (at least for the term). Will these guys finish their degrees? Seems like a lot to leave on the table if they don't.

        Re: Yale Off Season 2011

I could not bring myself to start this thread, still in disbelief over last weeks mess. I went to the NHFD vs NHPD Chiefs Cup game yesterday at Ingalls (FD 7-PD 5 ) and ran into a bunch of Yale fans that I know. I came to the conclusion that these past three seasons were very important for Yale Hockey, but I think they were more important for the state of hockey in the New Haven area. For a city which basically lost it's hockey identity with the loss of our rink and the decline of the Yale fanbase, these teams have lifted hockey back up to where it should be in our community. I thank Quinnipiac for the same reasons. Congrats to the players moving on in their hockey careers, BPT is sounding like an ECAC All Star team. Does anyone know who we definitely have coming in next year? My buddy who works at Ingalls said the kid from Delbarton is a good pick up (Captain of Agostinos former team). The goalie situation will be interesting as well.

Kearney, Cahill, and Martin are all ATO(Ameteur Tryout Contracts) They will return to school after a couple of weeks. Kearney is close enough. He may commute.

As noted in the Register, Non-conference schedule includes UCONN 11/19, BC 11/26 at home. On the road SHU at Harbor Yards 11/22, at UMASS 12/7. IVY Showcase at Dartmouth: Princeton 10/27 Dart. or Brown 10/28. That leaves one opening in the non-conference schedule. There is a link to the composite ECAC schedule(eLynah, I believe).
          Yale's Schedule:

          Nov. 4-5 Cornell-Colgate
          11-12 @ Union-RPI
          Jan. 6-7 QU-Princ.
          13-14 @Clarkso-SLU
          20-21 Union-RPI
          27-28@ Harvard-Dart.
          Feb. 3-4 SLU- Clarkson
          10-11 @Colgate- COrnell
          17-18 Dart.-Harvard
          24@ Princeton-QU

This does not include the travel partner games with Brown or any alternate times of Games.

Yale needs to toughen up it's schedule if it wants to succeed at the NCAAs.

In case you did not see it in the women's thread, former Yale women's hockey player Mandi Schwartz passed away this morning.

You WCHAers keep saying this but there is one thing you need to keep in mind. Due to Ivy League regulations, Yale and the 5 other Ivy members of the ECAC can't begin their season until the last weekend in October. Also with the ECAC having 12 teams, that leaves scant room for the scheduling of any non-conference teams. To be fair, getting BC on the schedule is a big step up in the quality of non-conference play. UMASS has been down lately, but they have had some good seasons in HE so you can't really say that they are a weak sister either. Looking at next year's schedule, you could argue that Sacred Heart and UCONN are weak opponents, but it would be impolitic of Yale to bump those fellow CT teams from their schedule. That leaves one open game, which we can hope will be another strong team. This will most likely have to be an eastern based team since Yale is unlikely to travel west to play one game.

                    Re: Yale Off Season 2011

The NH Register published the following by Chip Malafronte on March 28th about incoming recruits.

In goal, sophomores Nick Maricic and Jeff Malcolm will compete for the job along with incoming freshman Connor Wilson, now playing for Chicago of the United States Hockey League.

Other recruits who should provide immediate help include defenseman Matt Killian, who like fellow Delbarton (N.J.) School alum Agostino will jump directly from high school hockey to Yale. Killian, like Agostino, is also expected to be an NHL draft pick in June. Forward Trent Ruffolo scored a league-best 35 goals for the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs and last week was named most valuable player of the Eastern Junior Hockey League.

That is so sad, she fought the good fight, taken way to soon. Mandi was another reason our hockey community came together as well, hopefully they will continue the QU/Yale Mandi's March to honor her memory.

Sorry but that doesn't make sense, because they have little room for OOC games they can't schedule tough ones? SH, UConn, UMA, another cupcake party. I will give credit though, at least BC is on the schedule that is a step in the right direction.

OK, I guess if all you want to do is look pretty in the PWR during the regular season, have at it.

Hey.... just a thought.... on a day that the Yale Hockey community lost one of its beloved and treasured leaders, how about taking 24 hours off from your jealousy-fueled diatribes? On any other day, I am sure that Yale Hockey would be basking in the glow of your gracing us with your "credit". I would venture a guess that you are someone who couldn't get into Yale .... let alone play on its hockey team!!! Once and for all, the kids can only line up against the players that come out of the other locker room.Oh... and this just in..... there ARE things more important than winning an NCAA championship!!!
