  • Hockey East Award Predictions

Player of the Year: Paul Thompson, UNH (Runner up: Cam Atkinson, BC)
Rookie of the Year: Mike Pereira, UMass (Runner up: Mike Collins, MC)
Defensive Defenseman: Jordan Heywood, MC (Runner up: Phillip Samuelson, BC)
Defensive Forward: Brian Gibbons, BC (Runner up: Ryan Flanigan, MC)
Coach of the Year: Mark Dennehy, MC (Unanimous)

    First Team All Hockey East:
    Forward: Cam Atkinson, BC
    Forward: Paul Thompson, UNH
    Forward: Gustav Nyquist, Maine
    Defense: Brian Dumoulin, BC
    Defense: Karl Stollery, MC
    Goalie: John Muse, BC

    Second Team All Hockey East:
    Forward: Stephane Da Costa, MC
    Forward: Brian Gibbons, BC
    Forward: Brian Flynn, Maine
    Defense: Phillip Samuelsson, BC
    Defense: Blake Kessel, UNH
    Goalie: Joe Cannata, MC

Honorable Mention: Wade McLeod, NU; Chris Barton, MC; Mike Sislo, UNH; Tommy Cross, BC; David Warsofsky, BU; Matt DiGiralomo, UNH

    All Rookie Team:
    Forward: Mike Pereira, UMass
    Forward: Mike Collins, MC
    Forward: Charlie Coyle, BU
    Defense: Jordan Heywood, MC
    Defense: Adam Clendening, BU
    Defense: Jamie Oleksiak, NU
No goalie - They've done weird things in past like more than the right number of forwards or d-men. If I had to pick a goalie, Dan Sullivan of Maine, but he let in way too many softies, but only frosh goalie with above .900 save pct.

Warsofsky doesn't even belong in honorable mention as he had a bad year. I would take Alex Chiasson or Joe Pereira over him but sense it a defenseman's spot go with someone else in the league. I think both Clendening and Garrett Noonan both had better years at BU than Warsofsky. I would possibly switch BU's Matt Nieto with Collins or Coyle as he really had a strong second half of the year but overall I agree with 90% of your choices. Nice job.

I agree regarding Warsofsky not having as good of a year, but a lot of the times, players get votes based on reputation.

I'm still trying to figure out this defensive forward award here. Is this just given to the forward with the best +/- as if it is required by Hockey East? Otherwise, taking Gibbons, an offensive force and not a shutdown forward, for that award is kind of ridiculous. Gibbons, FWIW, is still the best player in Hockey East, he's just not the best defensive forward in the league by a long shot.

          But that's just me.

I would have tended to give it to some one on Merrimack's third line. Flanigan for instance has the best plus/minus of any MC forward, but Sheen and Madsen are MC's top two PKers. I didn't want to look like too big of a homer. Gibson does lead HE in SH points I believe.

He evidently confused "being a hack" with "playing defense".

Toughest calls (imo) are defensive forward and second team d. Thompson wins poty because Gibbons/Atkinson detract from each other in the eyes of voters.

While Gibbons and Atkinson are the two BEST forwards in the league, I don't think Sislo gets as much hype for poty as Gibbons. It'll probably be close, but I think Thompson wins it.

Stupid that they go with five forwards. Just pick three and make the others honorable mention. Also, if Sullivan was the best rookie goalie, might as well just leave that spot off the team entirely.

Nice to see Dumoulin win best dman as a sophomore.

J.D., absolutely agree that selection of 5 forwards is stupid; especially if you are only going to pick 2 d. Omission of MC's rookie d-man Jordan Heywood is egregious. A couple of comparisons:

Clendening 17 pts, +6 and 74 penalty minutes (HE games only)
                            Bitetto 16 pts, E, and 40 PM's
                            Heywood 11 pts +18 (second among ALL HE D-men), and 37 PM's
