  • Bobcats take on the Big Red in semifinal round of ECAC playoffs

The Quinnipiac Women's Ice Hockey Team swept Princeton in the first round of the ECAC playoffs, but the next one will be anything but easy. The Bobcats enter the semis against the Cornell Big Red, defending ECAC Tournament and NCAA champions from last year. Game 1 is tonight, with game 2 on Friday.

With the two victories, Quinnipiac improves to 3-2 all-time in post-season play. The Bobcats only other post-season appearance came last year during the 2009-10 season. In 2009-10, Quinnipiac went 1-2 in its playoff stint, falling to Rensselaer in its opening round Quarterfinals matchup.

    QU First round in review:
Quinnipiac turned in two of its best-played games of the season in its opening round ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals sweep of No. 5 Princeton on Friday, Feb. 25 and Saturday, Feb. 26. On Friday night, the Bobcats came away with a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Tigers, thanks to a game-winning goal by sophomore forward Brittany Lyons (Canton, Mass.) with just five second remaining in regulation. On the play, freshman forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) outhustled two Princeton defenders to a loose puck behind the net and delivered a perfect pass (while falling to the ice) to Lyons who was crashing the net. After falling behind, 1-0, junior defender Bethany Dymarczyk (Hamden, Conn.) scored Quinnipiac's first goal on a second period slap shot with 7:47 remaining in the frame. Vigilanti made 20 saves in the contest.

The following afternoon, the Bobcats ensured that a game three would not be necessary, as the team skated to a 2-0 shutout victory over the Tigers. Babstock's redirection goal in the second period proved to be the game-winner (her league-high 10th such goal of the season), while her assist to fellow freshman forward Erica Uden Johansson (Sundsvall, Sweden) with 13 seconds remaining in the third period sealed the victory for Quinnipiac. The shutout for Vigilanti was her league-high ninth shutout of the season.

Players to Watch for the Bobcats:

    1. Kelly Babstock - Come on, whose name did u expect to see here. The recently crowned ECAC Rookie and Player of the year will once again need to be the go to girl if the Bobcats have any hope of slaying the Big Red in this series.

    2. Victoria Vigilanti - with a strong first round series, Vigilanti will need to be in top form and stop any rubber that comes her way however she can. Look to the defense to step it up infront of her and provide excellent backup, if needed. 21 -11 -3 regular season record

    Cornell First Round Review:
Cornell advanced through the ECAC Hockey quarterfinal round with a sweep over Rensselaer last weekend, but not without a little drama. The Big Red got the tying goal with 6.6 seconds left in regulation, then won the game with Karlee Overguard's game-winner 1:28 into the extra session on Friday. In game two on Saturday, the Big Red sealed the victory with three third-period goals to claim a 6-1 victory over the Engineers. Rebecca Johnston and Brianne Jenner led the squad with five points each on the weekend, with Johnston scoring four goals and one assist and Jenner picking up five assists. Lauren Slebodnick got the start in goal both nights and made 19 saves in the two games.

    Players to Watch:

    1. Brianne Jenner - freshman foward who is the number one scorer on the team and can almost do so at will 22G 25A on the season

    2. Lauren Slebodnick
    Amanda Mazzotta
    Katie Wilson

All three goalies have had stellar seasons, as Selbodnick went 12 -1 -1, Mazzotta 13-1-0 and Wilson 3-0-0. It's anyone's guess has to who will be in net, but going with the Junior Mazzotta here has to be the choice, as she has playoff experience and the team feels comfotable with her between the pipes.

    Series Review:

Cornell swept the season series with the Bobcats, winning by a 5-1 score on Oct. 29 at the TD Bank Sports Center and claiming a 4-0 victory at Lynah Rink on Nov. 20. The Big Red holds a 6-3-5 lead in the all-time series against the Bobcats, a series that dates back to the 2003-04 season. Thursday's meeting will mark the first time the two programs have met in the postseason.

You seem to have missed the fact that Mazzotta hasn't started a single game in 2011. She is injured. Selbodnick will almost certainly start, barring a miraculous recovery by Mazzotta.

I'd say players to watch are:

    1. Rebecca Johnston -- Johnston was the clear MVP for Team Canada in the Four Nations Cup this year, scoring the overtime game-winner against the United States. She was recently honored as Top 10 Kazmaier finalist despite a mediocre regular season in which she had 0 goals & 1 assist in the 4 toughest games against Mercyhurst (2), Dartmouth, and Harvard, and was nowhere near the national scoring leaders. But she finally showed up big in the RPI series, scoring the dramatic game-tying goal in Game 1 and netting a hat trick in Game 2.

    2. Fortino & Rougeau -- when all your goalies put up good stats, it's a pretty safe bet that your All-American defensemen have something to do with that. They're also both among the nation's D scoring leaders as well.

    3. Jenner

But Cornell has lots of forward depth. You'll have to watch all of them.

Nevertheless, with the League Player of the Year and last year's goalie of the year, and only one team playing with their season on the line, Quinnipiac surely has a chance.

Clearly, you meant NCAA finalist . . . I'm quite sure that UMD won that game and are the current NCAA women's champions. (Sorry, sometimes I really, really can't help myself.)

Ok, never mind. Good for her.
