I would hope some consideration would be given to John Markell, the former OSU D-1 hockey coach. His vast coaching experience and his recruiting abilities would make him a valuable resource to a good Michigan State program. While his program at OSU didn't always "compare" to the OSU football achievements those who know hockey are aware of the differences in the sports. At OSU there is constant comparison's to football with minimal attention given to viable programs such as hockey & baseball. For 15 straight years Markell achieved 20+ in wins per season, went to the NCAA 6 times in 15 years, and took the Buckeyes to the Frozen Four. His recruiting capabilities are well known; just look at his former players that went on to professional hockey. He has been involved in the CCHA the majority of his hockey career, another added benefit he would bring with his experience. Hopefully Michigan State would at least allow John Markell to interview so that he can give them an idea of what he could do to continue on the legacy of Spartan hockey.......

Sometimes I wonder if my sarcasm meter or tongue-in-cheek detector need mending... I doubt it needed pointing out on a college hockey board that Markell is a former D1 hockey coach. And what's this about 15 years of 20+ wins? I doubt there are many schools fool enough to fire a coach who wins 20 games a year throughout his career.

I don't expect MSU to go the big bucks route such as Gwozdecky. And dollars are likely to be a big component in the list of candidates interviewed. Another name that I hear gaining support is former MSU player and current Vancouver assistant Newell Brown. Cole also is a strong candidate. But look for MSU to be looking in that range of a smaller school coach looking to move to a big time program or a current assistant looking to move up. That pool is much thinner this year after Blashill, Osiecki and Bergeron all secured head coaching positions.

I would hope MSU casts the net out far and wide. They have the tradition (despite what an earlier poster said) and they *should* have the money.

I really like Rick Comley as a coach, I wish it would have worked out for him but he does get to retire as one of the best overall coaches and 2 NCAA titles in his back pocket.

Looking at the list put up thus far the 2 UNO assistants seem to be the best candidates IMO. Osiecki was a great pick-up for OSU and has that program headed in the right direction, I feel that either UNO assistant has the potential to do the same for MSU.

other than that...Any of the Millers coaching anywhere?

Here's John Markell's NCAA coaching record (http://www.uscho.com/stats/coach/mid,35/john-markell/)

I count 7 seasons with 20 wins, and 6 tourney appearances in 15 seasons. I also see 8 seasons under .500.

Seriously, is Markell signing up repeatedly on USCHO to drum up support for his name?

How dare you attempt to confuse the issue with facts! :P

ya well ohio state was one of the worst programs in college hockey when markell got there and he made it into a legit program, and that could also explain some of the under 500 seasons

It doesn't explain being under .500 and failing to win more than 15 games for 4 of the past five seasons.

Some things can't be explained but are clearly out of the coach's hands.

According to Denver Post, Gwozdecky not interested.

I'm the first to say that you should always read these kinds of things with a grain of salt. However, I really think that Gwoz is using the press to negotiate an extension to his current contract. I'm not sure if I mentioned in my post regarding the UNO assistants, Rud who was an assistant at SCSU and is now coaching at Green Bay in the USHL. I agree that the best bet may come from the assistant arena rather than a former head coach. But it's out of my hands, other than voicing an opinion. ;-)

Not surprising to me. He has laid down roots in Denver and is a mainstay in the community. Not much not to like about living in Denver. As I said way back in the beginning of this thread, he has the chance to become a legend like Murray with one or two more NCAA titles. He is already the 2nd greatest hockey coach at DU and his stamp is firmly on the program. He is in charge of the flagship sport at DU, something he wouldn't be at most other big time schools. Hockey is generally #3 behind football and hoops especially the Big Ten schools.

This seems to be the best place to get a replacement. Assistant in NCAA or Equivalent ranks. Or a head Coach from a junior team or high school from a wellrespected program. Preferably youngish , Blasi comes to mind as an example.

I'd reply, "Source?" but that would feel recursive.
