NU 'mans up' in girl's memory
Hockey team retiring cancer victim's jersey
    By Tyler Dunne

LEWISTON — Down a hallway, inside a dusty room near the Niagara University men's hockey team locker room, reside the team slogans that never stuck.

    "Effort alone is not achievement."

    "Purple Train."

    "Winning or Whining? We Choose."

Ten in all, these signs are all stashed away. No need for them anymore. Niagara has a new mantra that will last an eternity. Around the corner, hanging above their sticks, is a banner that reads "Man Up!"

Here at Niagara, those two words elicit a waterfall of emotions. Meghan Redenbach, the 15-year-old Royalton-Hartland student who died from a rare form of ovarian cancer on Christmas Eve, originated that credo in an essay contest at Roswell Park Cancer Institute............

Thanks for posting, le. This is a story worth anyone's time to read. Meghan's death was very sad for all but her story will endure and continue to inspire. I recall when Burkie told me about this on a visit to Dwyer, about how the team "adopted" Meghan and dedicated the season to her. IIRC, they sold "Man-up" t-shirts as a fund-raiser for her. A great and thoughtful gesture on the part of Burkie and the team to honor her by retiring her number "6". I am glad to see that the hockey program will contine with this tribute to Meghan. I am sure it is greatly appreciated by her family.

    Another story on Meghan ...

Her number "6" will be retired at tomorrow night's game.

Niagara Purple Eagles remember honorary team captain
                Friday, 21 Jan 201
                Tricia Cruz

LEWISTON, N.Y. (WIVB) - She was honorary team captain of the Niagara Purple Eagles, inspiring team spirit by urging them to "man up." Meghan Redenbach was lost to a rare form of cancer, and the team offered special honors to their biggest fan.

The Dwyer Arena at Niagara University is more than just an ice rink for the Purple Eagles……

Re: Niagara U Hockey, "Mans Up" in girl's memory

Has a number ever been retired for a fan by any other team? This is perhaps the most inspirational tribute I've ever heard a team undertake. Tears would not stop flowing after reading this. College hockey should be truly proud of a most well deserved honor bestowed upon this wonderful girl. Niagara has it's priorities right.
