  • 2011 Championship Manual

    http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/...b6f790a48a4ecb

Look @ the criteria on the bottom of page 6 continuing on to page 7.

    SoS = 2/3 OWP + 1/3 OOWP

I think this is a change.

I think this was implemented or planned last year. I seem to remember a discussion of coming up with a single number to measure SOS. It helps teams that play teams with good records against poor opposition - In other words it makes NC games against the top teams in the MCHA, MASCAC and ECAC NE a bit more attractive because you don't take quite as much of a hit for the poor OWP that they bring in.

My rankings weight OWP and OOWP equally. Currently the PWC ranks them as equal, but I'm willing to be that at some point they will tweak it to incorporate this (which I now remember was suggested, but not officially adopted last year). Krach is based on a different kind of scheme, known as logistic regression that doesn't directly calculate either OWP or OOWP.

It's not necessarily a change...it's just finally been published.

I would also like to point out that we now know the starting times for the semis and the finals. SWA is running a nice sale right now from the DC area to MSP. I think it is time to book the seats.

                Re: 2011 Championship Manual

                SoS is one criteria..

Each team is evaluated on :

                In region winning percentage
                Strength of Schedule
                Head to Head
                Common Opponents
                Record vs. Ranked teams

                The Eastern Rankers are:
                Bruce Delventhal (Plattsburgh)
                Mike McShane (Norwich)
                Ed Gozek (Oswego)
                Lou Izzi (Nichols)
                Chris Potter (Wesleyan)
                Bill O'Neill (Salem)
                Jamie Rice (Babson)
                and
                TBD

I'm going to assume that TBD will be from the ECAC-West.

The first ranking is due February 8 and then each week through March 1 and then there will be the final one right before the selection committee meets on March 6. There is some conflict in the manual whether or not the 2/8 ranking is released to the public. The 3/6 ranking is secret.

So now we wait until 2/8 and see what happens.

Why the need for all this secrecy? The first ranking has always been secret, and the last one has been secret. Why not just assign weights to the criteria and let everybody know? It's not like it's the plans for a nuclear power plant or anything.

Because it adds about 100+ posts to the D-III threads?

More importantly, it means they don't have to publicly explain that "we sent this team that should have had a bye on the road for a first-round game in order to save few bucks" This way they can do that behind closed doors without ever needing to explain that concept.
