    Re: Team Canada U-18

Looks like not many changes made to the roster going into the World Championships for the Team Canada. I had heard that the Canadian team was thoroughly out-played by their American counterparts in Lake Placid in August. Assuming the two meet again in Sweden (hopefully in the final!!), any predictions on results?

surprised/disappointed that Kristine Grenier didn't make it (just as i was in the summer). there are a few kids i think she could be there ahead of, but i dont think it's fair to call them out as it's certainly not their fault.

also surprised that there is only one skater from quebec. not sure who else should be there as im not that familiar with the eligible players there, just am used to them having more of a presence on these teams and their U18's did really well last fall at Nationals.

Quebec U18 did not do that well last year compared to expectations and prior years. Last year it was an All Ontario Final, with Quebec losing to the second Ontario squad in the semi. To be fair, the team had to battle injuries to three key players, including their star, which had a large affect on their outcome.

The end result this year is a lot of Ontario players on the TC-U18 squad this year, including all six D.

Bit surprised at the minimum amount of turnover from the summer squad, expected a bit more. They did add one forward who will make a difference for sure.

On paper the US will be the team to beat, but never count out the Canadian Hockey Heart.

Ha, well I'm sure Hockey Canada is getting an earful from Quebec. Quebec wants their OWN programs at all the World Championship levels. Anyway....

I think that the U18 Women's program (Canada) should do as the U17 Men.... Maybe not five Canadain regions but at least 3.... Ontario, East (Que & Atlantic), and West.

Like really, look at the waste of an event at the U18 Worlds... Two teams, USA and Canada. How much fun is that? Might as well just have a best of 7 serious with Canada and USA.

          Thoughts on this?

Oh yeah.. U17 Men tonight, USA vs Team Ontario for the Gold!
          Cheers

Originally this was floated as a format for the first two or three years to give the Euros a chance to develop their U18 squads. The idea was to have the US and Canada play each other for a N. American championship, while the Euros had their own. Apparently the IIHF wanted to jump right in with the current format.

And the appearance is that not much has changed on the competitive side since the inception of this event four years ago. That can not be good news for post 2014.

Maybe we should start advocating to have some NA players play for their native countries of their ancestors to get this kick started a bit more, and have them play overseas for a few years while studying there and getting education and hockey tab picked up. (This is what happened on the Male side in the 70's and 80's with some secondary countries for a few years while they were building programs). Thoughts ?.
