  • Re: All Things Denver XXIX

DU has learned the art of the comeback, which is fantastic. But down the stretch, defenses are going to tighten and it's far better to play from ahead than behind. That's five straight games now where DU did not score first, and the odds are that DU can't continue to play from behind all year.

I would think the coaching staff will have an interesting week preparing for UAA - a team coming off a home sweep of CC, and a team that will be as physical as any team DU faces outside of UND. It will be good to have students back for the games, and should be a grind-it-out kind of series. Pios need better start, better defense and better goaltending.

Also a tip of the hat to the Pios hoops team , who won their seventh in a row tonight, before an announced crowd of 6,200 (but was more like 4,000 warm bodies) with a lot of kids groups in Magness. Anyway, the DU crowd was even more involved in the game than some hockey crowds. Lots of noise down the stretch. DU now 5-0 in league play. School spirit is spreading.

OK, DU alone in second, only one point behind UND, CC loses, Duluth loses, UNO is in a tailspin. Life is good!!

I'm off to Orono to watch the Pats at "Pat's" (DG will remember this bar when he came out for the Maine series in 2005). and then off to the Alfond to watch Maine/BC!!!!!

Life is good (except for the slight hangover issue)!!!!

After all the late results were tabulated DU stands alone at #3 in the PWR behind Yale and UND. As of right now, DU would have a #1 seed in the NCAA tourney along with Yale, UND and UMD. Three #1 seeds for the WCHA! Still 12 games and the league playoffs to go but the WCHA is looking strong.

Warning. All you out of town fans. Jay has already rolled out his newest meme, calling the Pioneers "comback kids." That means we're going to be hearing that morning noon and night. Talk about "shock and awe." Always something to take the fun out of it.

After Sunday's limited action in which Maine beat BC and Brown beat Yale, DU is tied for 2nd in PWR with UND.

Speaking of Boston College, Adam Murray is now 4-1-0 for the season with his only loss to BC. Sure the GAA is hovering near 4 per game and the SV% is 85% but he is winning games and we seem to forget at times that he is only a 19 year old Sophomore. Lets hope he continues improving.

Both DU's goalies have been pretty average of late, but DU hasn't lost because the offense is plugging along at 3.3 GPG clip, which is about the same as last year's offense!

Defense and goaltending will need to be improved if DU want's to go deep in the playoffs.

Watched Matt's fight with Avery last night, basically Avery sucker punched him and continued to hit him when he was down. Matt is not a fighter and Avery should have picked on someone who is a fighter. Lots of yapping between Shelley and Avery after the fight and throughout the rest of the game. I would expect some future fireworks between Shelley and Avery to settle the score of Avery taking on Matt.

Looks like the WCHA is going to have a wild finish between UND, DU and UMD for the MacNaughton. 2 points separate the 3 top teams. All have 12 WCHA games remaining with DU having 7 home and 5 away while UND and UMD both have 6 home and 6 away. The three teams face four common opponents to finish the season: CC, MTU, UNO and SCSU. DU and UND also face MN while DU and UND both face UAA. UND also plays BSU while UMD faces MSUM.

While UNO currently sits in 4th place with 2 points behind 3rd place UMD, they have to face all three teams ahead of them starting with UND this coming weekend and ending the year with DU followed by UMD. They will have a very tough road to be one of the top 3 teams in the league.

The way the last 12 games of the WCHA are setting up, the MacNaughton may not be clinched until the final night. Should be a fun ride.
