Weircoch and Colbourne were top level NCAA players and they are struggling, wow.
Maturity does count. Rakhshani kept building over a his four years and the dividends are paying. You can't discount his own determination in making it happen in the AHL and hopefully in the big show.
Neither Colborne nor Wiercioch had 2 good years in a row. Both were true freshmen. Colborne started slow and finished strong and Wiercioch just the reverse. (Even as a sophomore, Patrick still looked pretty gangly, as a freshman downright skinny.) I know it would be hard to turn down the money and defer your dream, but in my humble opinion both would have benefitted by another year at DU.
    GO DU !!!

When guys are drafted in the first or second round, they tend to have a lot of confidence in themselves, which can be both good and bad. Family, friends, nHL teams and agents are all telling them how good they are and how good they can be. You can't blame the guys for taking the money and signing. It's pretty hard to say no, considering if you get hurt, you get nothing, and you can get started on your pro career, which is your dream.

What they don't tell you about is the long grind of AHL busrides, minor league life, and hockey becoming a business, rather than fun. You are no longer a big man on campus, but just a struggling minor leaguer in a place like Providence or Binghamton.

That's good that they are deferrring him another year. He looked a little lost when the U18 team played here.

Big article today in the Denver Post by Irv Moss on one of DU's all time greats; defenseman Greg Woods. Check out the picture with his original home jersey with Denver Boone on the front. As someone who I knew very well at DU, Greg was one of the most gifted offensive d-men in DU history. I still scratch my head as to why Greg didn't make the 1980 Olympic Team. I was at all of the training camps in Colorado Springs and he was one of the best d-men there. I know he is very proud of his career at DU including being part of the outstanding 1977/78 team which went 33-6-1 and was ranked #1 almost the whole year. The players on that team always wanted the chance to go to the NCAAs but the team was on probation by the NCAA and denied from going by the federal courts. DU was still ranked #1 by The Hockey News even after BU won the national title. Last summer when I saw Greg he pointed that out to me again. Nice article by Irv.

I'm not so sure about the non-scholie part. Factor in Wrenn's departure & Van Voorhis' deferral and there is certainly scholie money available. You keep Beau Bennett around for an extra year or two and factor in Salazar & Nutini's strong play. With two goals in 8 games its certainly plausible that they gave him a scholie or at least a partial.

A few interesting tidbits: Despite what the article says, Wade is actually the older brother of Beau. He switched from forward to defense recently which explains why his hockey development was behind Beau's.

He also played for the Trail Smoke Eaters in the BCHL last season before switching to the NAHL. He had 3 goals and 25 assists.

Rhett was injured in last night's Islander game. He suffered a concussion. Here is from the Isles' Newsday blog talking about who practiced today.

Recent call-up Rhett Rakhshani is not; he suffered a concussion in last night's game but, because of inclement weather, the Islanders have not been able to get him to a specialist yet to assess the severity.
Rhett played on the 3rd line last night with Josh Bailey and Jeremy Colliton.
