Sad moment in DU hockey history. The Chiefs's has been in fragile health. He had a legendary life.

    RIP Murray Armstrong
    GO DU !!!

We have lost a legend, but we were fortunate to have him. Almost 95 years! What an amazing life, and what an impact he had on hockey!

I put this on the Murray Armstrong thread, but it merits repeat here for posterity. All the four living men who coached DU as head hockey coaches remember Murray in DU's press release.

He can't help but be better this time, the circumstances are different, and he's not likely to get many more chances if Great Brittain continues his top flight play. He'll be motivated and I predict will do a good job.

Posted this on Murray's thread. It's SI reporting on the '69 NC game but it's really about Murray and his philosophy.

Note: The article talks alot about George Morrison. 40 goals his rookie season, including 5 hatties! Two games with 4! That guy could score in his sleep. Is he the only Pioneer with back to back league scoring titles? The article says he was the property of the Rangers, however, he wound up leaving DU a year early to sign with St. Louis. Craig Patrick's dad was GM of the Blues. And Jeff Jennings, son of Rangers owner Bill, was a DU student and pretty good pal.

I would bet he is. It's not like DU has racked up many individual scoring titles over the years. In my time (the past 30ish years), I only seem to recall Gaume in '86, Dave Shields in '90 and Stastny in '06. Ed Beers, perhaps, in '82? Then when you consider that from 1974 until the past 10-15 years that DU only had real good teams in '78 and '86, I would have to state once again "I would bet he is" DU's only back to back scoring champ -- unless maybe Masterton pulled it off in maybe '60 and '61, but I'm not sure the year when there was no league (and thus no league scoring title), maybe '59, when they were in between the WIHL disbanding and the WCHA forming.

Jerry Walker had some eye popping numbers from those years, too. 60-61 team, IIRC, averaged better than 7 goals a game! Occasionally I think of that when Swami offers one of his well thought out: "we'll probably not be able to score more than 3 goals a game" analyses, suggesting it'll be tough to finish above the middle of the league. Yeah? Well, where will we finish if we average better than 7 a game? With one loss is the answer. And 12 goals in the NC game!

I think Jerry Walker had something like 89 goals in 2 seasons and no more than 65-66 games, with 13 hat tricks. Or something like that...

Sounds right. I'm too lazy to dig out my last media guide, you're in the ball park.
