The West went 5-0 against the East last night. Granted they had home ice in four of the games, but I don't think it would have made much of a difference. RIT and the three former CHA members now hold the top 4 spots in both points and win percentage and have opened up some space between themselves and the rest of the league, yet two of those teams will have to play a first round series while #'s 5 & 6 get a bye. Stupid format.

            Niagara Hockey Sweeps AIC

            1/15/2011

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. - A strong first period led the Niagara men's hockey team (13-7-2, 10-5-0 AHA) to a 3-1 victory over the host American International Yellow Jackets (4-13-1, 4-10-1 AHA) on Saturday night at the Olympia Ice Center. Niagara's win on Saturday night cemented a 4-1-0 record on its season-long, five-game road trip.

Niagara jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 26 seconds into the game, when a rebound from senior Paul Zanette was dumped into the net by fellow senior Bryan Haczyk, pushing his consecutive games point streak to 18 games. Freshman netminder Cody Campbell kept the game scoreless with 11 saves, including a stop on a penalty shot near the end of the period.

Haczyk would give the Purps a 2-0 lead heading into the break, when his wrist shot from the slot beat Yellow Jackets netminder Ben Meisner for his 18th goal of the season. The Nutley, N.J. native has now scored eight goals in his last four games.

The senior Zanette would net his 18th goal of the season with 3:35 left in the third period, on a nice passing play by Haczyk and sophomore Giancarlo Iuorio. AIC dented the scoreboard with 51 seconds left, beating Campbell on a two-on-one while shorthanded.

Campbell made 30 saves in his second career win. The elder Zanette finished with a goal and two assists for Niagara, a team that is now 9-0-1 when leading after two periods this season.

Niagara returns home for its next three games, starting on Friday, Jan. 21 against Sacred Heart.

It is an absolutely ridiculous set-up. And things are going pretty much as predicted in the preseason. Going by win % right now, in the West it would be RIT and Niagara with byes while RoMo would have to play Canisius and MC would play AFA. Meanwhile, in the Easy pod, UConn (.500, same as West 5th place MC) and HC (.467, same as West last place Canisius) both get byes. I know, a lot of hockey yet to be played but the trends are seem to be the West getting stronger and the East faltering. Stupid format.

West goes 8-1-1 for the weekend, hence the reason for the eastern pod charity. The West earns the money and the East cashes the checks.

Late start by Air Force tonight and the rally fell short. Really need a Ben Worker-type goalie to step up and take some of the weight off the freshman's shoulders. Too inconsistent from one night to the next. Nice to see three lines scoring, though.

This may be interesting. Go to the AHA site and you will see that the bio on the AHA Commissioner, Robert DeGregorio, has not been updated (still lists 8 teams for the AHA) which might give an insight into how the conference is run and its administrative acumen.

The AHA playoff system is deficient and the inability or unwillingness for the conference to come to terms with the scholarship limit is problematic, and the combination of both is holding back the entire conference from its natural maturation.

The western division is clearly the strength of the conference with the competition far above the east but when it comes to the playoffs the conferences are treated equal and thus unreasonable.

The conference limits on scholies is holding back teams that want to grow their respective franchises and compete on a level playing field with out-of-conference teams and elevate the entire conference on a national scale.

The in-conference scheduling arrangement must be adjusted to provide more out-of-conference play since the eastern contingent is significantly weaker than the western division and hurt the western teams. For years Niagara played a very strong out-of-conference schedule and that is no longer possible since we now must play teams that rate poorly due to their limited commitment.

It is what it is. I think RIT fans asked a lot of the same questions when we joined.

I get some of the key things that were complaints. Cost Containment is crucial. And to a point, without cost containment, I don't see a few of these teams surviving, which could be devastating to the NCAA tournament. The playoff format is stupid tho.

In a couple years there will be realignment with the BTHC and who knows what will happen.

                        Komey,

Well, it is what is until it someone changes it.

I understand the "cost containment" argument and even support it vis-a-vis the athletic arms race that has engaged many state u's.

However, in the case of Niagara, the development of a solid DI program has led to increased applications and admissions by the general student population, and has also lead to the formation of a club hockey team which attracts about 20 additional, full paying students each year. The members of Niagara’s ACHA club team are great students that simply have an interest in exercising their athletic talents at a competitive intercollegiate level albeit not at DI.

Our ACHA team is actually quite good and the increased matriculations at NU due solely to our DI program provides the basis that a substantive argument can be made that going full scholie is actually less expensive on a net-net basis than the cost containment protocol supported by DeGregorio and some school administrators.

I am not suggesting that the AHA or any member school buy my theory without a thorough review based on scholarship and discreet demographics. I am suggesting that unsupported notions (limited scholies) no matter the popular sentiment lead to poor long-term administrative decisions in nearly all cases no matter the subject.

This. I had the same experience. They really aren't interested in what you, the fan, thinks. They could care less if you show up for games, or the tournament in Rochester. They are the epitome of the self-licking ice cream cone.
What Bob really wants is for the western teams to get so fed up that they form their own league and leave his little Boston-based cost-containment conference alone. The AHA expanded because they didn't want to be perceived as hostile to the rest of the college hockey community and responsible for more programs folding, but they aren't happy at all about the shift in power to the west at the expense of all the schools east of the Hudson. The AHA is a just temporary home for a lot of programs until the next wave of national realignment is over. But Bob and his cronies are going to stick it to us every year until then.

I'm sure that the Niagara administration would certainly rather not be in Atlantic Hockey. But getting to the NCAA tournament otherwise would be EXTREMELY hard. And look at what is going on at Huntsville - they are the worst team in the RPI in DI hockey. I'm not suggest that would happen at Niagara - but it could. We all know there will be some realignment once Penn State and the BTHC start up. It will be interesting to see what the CCHA does, and if there is any impact on the Eastern schools.

My best guess is CCHA - BTHC + Western Pod = New Conference. AHA goes back to a 6-team league.
