  • Atlantic Hockey 2010-11: Twelve Teams Enter, One Team Leaves

Not long before the puck drops now.

    Unanswered questions for the season:
    1. How will the scheduling pods affect the regular and post seasons?
    2. Can we improve on last season's dismal non-conference record?
    3. If we do improve on it, will it be enough that the top team might earn an at-large bid to the national tournament?
    4. Can an AHA team match or surpass RIT's Frozen Four berth?

    1) regular season: no effect
post season: possibly high impact (or none) depending on competitive balance
    2) It certainly isn't likely to get any worse.
    3) No
    4) Match - maybe, but unlikely
    Surpass - No
Can't we all just get along?
Always remember... This is just a game we're talking about here. Let's not take it all too seriously.

1.Won't be affected very much in reg season. Probably won't have much of one on post season either, 3 west teams and 1 eastern team in the finals still seems likely.
      2. Perhaps slightly
      3. No
      4. Not likely at all.

        1. If a team is dominant in the Eastern pod but does not do well in the West it will make a regular season factor. Certainly will be a post-season.

        2. Yes. Niagara and Robert Morris will help here.

        3. Unlikely. The only way this happens if some big wins happen early (off the top of my head Mercyhurst against Michigan and RIT against St. Cloud/UNO)

        4. Unlikely. RIT got a benefit of a great regional for them.

Last season Bentley lost to Northeastern 3-2, Quinnipiac 3-2 (ot), and RPI 5-2; beat Brown 3-2 and UMass-Amherst 4-1 (biggest win in program history); and tied Lake Superior State 2-2. So, 2-3-1 total.

This season Bentley plays Quinnipiac, RPI, Clarkson (2), Northeastern, and UMass-Lowell. I am thinking that the Falcons just might win three OOC games this year, but not sure against which teams.

Bumping this so that maybe the arguing in the Summer thread will stop. =)

Here's another question: Why does AIC only have 3 non-conference games?

Simple answer: It's a buyer's market, and AIC has nothing to sell.

More complex answer: With a tightly controlled market for non-conference dates (51 out of 58 teams have no more than 7 games to schedule OOC, and a fair few teams are below 5 due to perennial commitments), teams are going to be looking to pack as much value into their choices as they can. AIC's value is, essentially, that they have 18 hockey players and a working bus.

What makes you say that? They don't even play the three teams they either beat or tied last season. QU, RPI, and NU beat them last year. Lowell is better than Brown. What they do have going for them is two games against (I'm guessing on the road) Clarkson. If the Knights are as bad as they were last year, at least the Falcons will have a shot. Although... as bad as Clarkson was, they did beat the # 1 team in the AHA.

I'm assuming they at least manage to keep THAT working.

In a perfect universe it would.

But for some reason, the Fighting Bumblebee carries less weight than factors like "can actually play hockey well", "will improve my standing for the NCAA tournament" and "will be an exciting draw for fans".
