  • US Women's World University Games Roster Announced

As on the men's side, the US squad will be made up of ACHA club hockey players. I was hoping they would use DIII players.

    Full Roster

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Hockey today announced the 22-player U.S. Women's National University Team roster, as well as six alternates, for the upcoming 2011 Winter World University Games that will take place Jan. 27-Feb. 6 in Erzurum, Turkey. This marks the first time that the U.S. will be sending a women's team to the biannual event.

The U.S. team is comprised of players from collegiate ice hockey teams affiliated with the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

"It's pretty exciting to be a part of the first U.S. women's team at this event," said Mo Stroemel, head coach of the U.S. Women's National University Team. "I think our expectations after the tryout are pretty high. We have a diverse group of players who create synergy as a team."

Seven seniors highlight the U.S. roster, including defensemen Shea Crawford (Selbyville, Del./Lindenwood University) and Lindsay Reihl (Cheshire, Conn./Penn State University); forwards Tiffany Juha (Cape Coral, Fla./California University of Pennsylvania), Emily Nelson (Ann Arbor, Mich./University of Michigan), Terra Payne (Gaylord, Mich./Michigan State University) and Ashley Rumsey (West Olive, Mich./Grand Valley State University); and goaltender Heather Rossi (Kunkletown, Pa./Penn State University).

NOTES: Eleven different states are represented on the U.S. roster, with seven players coming from Michigan. Other states represented include Alaska, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia ... Lindenwood University leads all schools with five representatives, while Michigan State University and Penn State University each have four players on the U.S. roster and Grand Valley State University and Robert Morris University Illinois have three ... All members of the U.S. Women's National University Team were selected following the USA Hockey Winter World University Games Evaluation Camp Aug. 6-8 in Grand Rapids, Mich. ... Mo Stroemel (State College, Pa.), who is beginning his fourth season as head coach of the Penn State University Lady Icers, will serve as head coach of the 2011 U.S. Women's National University Team ...Vince O'Mara (St. Louis, Mo.), head coach of the Lindenwood University women's ice hockey team, and Cory Whitaker (Caldedonia, Mich.), head coach of the Grand Valley State University women's ice hockey team, will serve as assistant coaches for Team USA ...

I wonder if the DIII coaches would support this, considering the tournament will be held in an important part of the season (Jan. 27-Feb. 6) when they positioning their teams for seeding in the NCAA's.

Also very interesting this will take place in Turkey (not known to be a hockey hotbed).

Yes, women can. While conservative muslims tend to lean toward Sharia law, this is not (yet) the predominant way of life in urban Turkey. From what I've read however, there seems to be a constant daily challenge regarding cultural differences, and so my interpretation is that while it may still be completely legal, it is probably not wise to flaunt it.

The Canucks send an All Star CIS squad to this event, that will include players like Chartrand and Labonte. (Ward was on the squad two years ago). Canucks beat the Chinese in the final two years ago in Harbin, China. I believe NCAA players from other countries can play for their squads as per the Universiade rules. Canada chooses to only use CIS players.

The US players are from club teams.. correct... not D3.. if they are put up against a CIS alstar team it will not be close.

The more important question is if they can support the Hockey while it is held there.

Who picked this team? The Penn State Coach?

Yes they can but no NCAA player is in Team Finland roster. There is no idea to do that. The level of University Games Women hockey is so weak. It is more like a huge student party abroad. Yes you will have games but that is not the most important issue there.

Go tell that to the CIS Womens hockey squad that won this event two years ago. They took it very seriously, and so did the host Chinese and the Japanese squad. The CIS squad assembled two years ago would beat most if not all D1 teams, and while they did win, they were challenged a few times in one or two goal games, so it was not a cakewalk.

Does someone remember if the England squad had the UNH player participate ?.

I believe so, but NoTeethLurch should come out of retirement to verify!

As it happens, I just got an e-mail from him this morning, and while it doesn't contain the answer, here's her current status:

Just to keep you up to date with what Angela is doing this season.

"After a hard physical season playing in the men's league last year, Angela has also headed to Switzerland where she will be a rival of her old team mate Kelly. Angela is playing for SC Reinach and has already contacted Kelly to meet up. Angela's team has just had a week long training camp. So far the only problem is the language, which is German, as only the coach and one other player can speak English. Still I am sure that it won't take her long to get the basics."

The link below contains a marvelous day by day account of the last games from the eyes of a parent of one of the Canadian players, as it was posted on the Ontario Hockey Forum.
