I was going to call it the Friarettes but figured that name would come back to bite me

    Two newsworthy events:
Karen Thatcher joins the PC coaching staff

Providence College women's Ice hockey coach Bob Deraney announced today (August 19) that Karen Thatcher has been named assistant coach. Thatcher most recently competed in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where she helped Team USA claim the silver medal. Thatcher replaces Meredith Roth, who resigned earlier this month to pursue other opportunities.

    and

Providence College goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ont) earned the opening victory for Team Canada in a three-game Under 22 Series with Team USA Tuesday. Lacasse stopped 29 of the 30 shots she faced, yielding only a breakaway goal to US Olympic veteran Monique Lamoureux at 5:12 of the third period. http://www.friars.com/sports/w-hocke...081910aaa.html

Actually, Lacasse played both the first and last games (both resounding victories!)

Information on the 5 incoming freshmen...

Corinne Buie, Forward, Edina, Minn. / Edina High School Buie is a 5-foot-9-inch, right-shot forward from Edina High School. Buie has signed on to play at Providence College after leading her team with 46 points on 30 goals and 16 assists in 17 games in the Minnesota Class 2A high school league. Buie attended the U-15, U-16 and U-17 National Development Camps. It was recently announced that Buie has been named a top-10 finalist for the Ms. Minnesota Hockey Award. A standout soccer player as well, Buie finished the 2009 season ranked second in the state with 33 goals.

"Corinne is the prototypical power forward who possesses speed, strength, skill and the ability to score goals. We are excited to add one of the most dynamic forwards in the state of Minnesota to our lineup next year," said Deraney.

Stephanie Demars, Forward, Vermontville, N.Y. / National Sports Academy Demars, a 5-foot-7-inch, left-shot forward plays for the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid, N.Y. in the Junior Women's Hockey League. In 43 games this season, Demars has notched 10 goals and 26 assists for 36 points.

"Stephanie is a very quick and talented forward whose high energy and puck-pressuring ability will fit in very nicely with our style of play. We look forward to her adding to our team speed and point production," said Deraney.

Rebecca Morse, Defender, Westfield, N.J. / National Sports Academy Morse, a 5-foot-8-inch, left-shot defender is a member of the National Sports Academy in the Junior Women's Hockey League along with Stephanie Demars. In 51 games this season, Morse ranks second on the team with 58 points on 21 goals and 37 assists.

Coach Deraney added, "Rebecca has without question this year made herself into one of the most dominating defenseman in the country. There is no doubt that she is just beginning to come into her own and we look forward to her bringing that type of skill and presence to our team next year."

Maggie Pendleton, Defender, Woodbury, Minn. / Hill Murray High School Pendleton is a 5-foot-10-inch, left-shot defender attending Hill Murray High School which competes in Class 2A in Minnesota. She also captained the tennis team, earning All-State honors.

"Maggie is one of the best first-pass defenders we've seen in a long time. The ability to relieve pressure and start the breakout off the first pass is one of the most important skills for any successful defenseman and she possesses it at the highest level. We are excited to add the combination of her size, strength, skills and intelligence to our defensive core," added Coach Deraney.

Nina Riley, Goaltender, Lexington, Mass. / Lexington High School Riley, sister of current PC senior defender Leigh Riley, is a 5-foot-7-inch goaltender attending Lexington High School. Riley has led her team to a 10-0 start in the 2009-10 season. Riley plays for the Assebet Valley girls ice hockey program in Concord, Mass. Riley recently helped Assabet Valley win the 2009 U-16 National Championship in Rochester, N.Y.

"Nina is a very talented goaltender who possesses good reflexes, an aggressive style and puck stopping ability. She has a history of winning national championships at every level she's competed at. We are looking forward to her solidifying our goaltending situation", added Coach Deraney.

As I was told, she returned to her home state to be closer to family. I wouldn't be surprised to see her running the bench at the high school level (or possibly higher) this winter.

Pretty positive about this year's team!! Finally after 2 years, we have more upperclassman than underclassman! The class of 2012 (8 players) are through their sophomore season and this experience will definately help on the ice. On top of that, Lacasse is back in goal after a very strong showing this summer.

Not sure about any of the freshmen (since I have never seen them play) so that is an unknown factor, but hopefully a positive one.

On the negative side, a few of the other teams in HE have acquired "difference makers" so at the very least, we will have stiff competition.

                Here's hoping September passes quickly

                  Great Honor/Opportunity for Genevieve Lacasse!

Looks like goaltenders SR Christina England and Freshman Nina Riley will get a chance to open against McGill.

                  Sept. 17, 2010

                  Calgary, Alta. -

Providence College junior goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ont.) has been invited to take part in Hockey Canada’s National Team Evaluation Camp. The camp will be held September 22-26 in Calgary. It is considered the first step in creating the National Team that will represent Canada in various competitions during the 2010-11 season.

Lacasse recently played for the Canadian National Women’s Under-22 team. She earned two victories in two games played during an August series with the United States Under-22’s in Toronto. She stopped 48 of the 51 shots she faced during the series to backbone Canada to a sweep of the Americans.

At Providence, Lacasse has played in 64 games with a 30-22-10 record, a .926 save percentage, and a goals against average of 2.05. Her Hockey East numbers, in 38 games played, include a record of 22-10-5, a save percentage of .929 and a 1.80 goals against.

While Lacasse is at the evalutation camp, her Friar teammates will kick off the season with an exhibition game against McGill Univeristy on September 24. Face-off is set for 7 pm.

For ticket information, call (401) 865-GOPC, or visit the ticket office in Alumni Hall.

Beware my cheese loving friend. I have subscribed to Providence games before, only to find them canceled or unavailable. Not only was I not given a refund, but months later I was charged (on several occasions) for other events on that network that I had not subscribed to.

McGill is also missing three key players for these games, G - Charlene Labonte, F- Anne Sophie Bettez and D- Gillian Ferrari.. McGills two Soph Goalies also will get their chance to shine.

After the two PC games McGill moves on to Northeastern on Sunday.

It is another implementation of live stats. Better than waiting for a box score to be posted, but it can be a frustrating way to follow a close game if the operator does not post the time remaining when there aren't any penalties or goals down the stretch. I wonder if PC has started using a live blog like some WCHA schools do. That helps a lot if there is a delay for something like an injury or a goal review, plus the eyewitness yields a better account of goals and scoring chances.

The best thing to do is make sure you have someone you know is going to be there's cell number. Texting fills the gaps between online updates. The road team is home in bed sometimes before GT or livestats catches up
