North Dakota vs Wisconsin - This one is remembered for the "Water Bottle" full tilt, all-out player brawl in the '80s that spilled off the ice and into the Beer Garden at Dane County Coliseum.
1. BU vs BC - This one goes back over 90 years, and the schools are only four miles apart on the same streetcar line. In 2005, Sports Illustrated called it the best rivalry in all of sports. I don't know if it's that, but it's the biggest we have.
2. Minnesota vs North Dakota - this is a 60+ year border war that really heated up in the '70s and has stayed there since. Probably the rivalry with the widest following.
3. Harvard vs Cornell - It's cooled a little of late, but these two have been cracking heads on the ice since 1910. Pretty sure this where we first saw chickens and fish thrown on the ice in the early '70s.
4. Denver vs Colorado College - This is a 60+ year state supremacy battle among two private school rivals that has seen some really intense fan behavior in an otherwise mellow state. This one had a full-out student riot in the mid 60s that forced a cancellation for a while. More recently, live on-ice animals and the occassional obscene banner replaced the student riots.
5. Minnesota vs Wisconsin - As intense a rivalry as you will get, the reason this border war isn't ranked higher is because it only really dates back to the Herb Brooks vs Bob Johnson hatred of the 1970s. Another with a big following.
6. Michigan vs Michigan State - Another rivalry that is a battle for the state, this one peaked in the Cold War in 2001 in front of 77,000 people. This also the result of a football spillover with many casual fans.
7. Clarkson vs St. Lawrence - This one is the best rivalry game you've never seen. Two small town North Country schools about 10 miles apart have been going at it for a very long time.
8. North Dakota vs Wisconsin - This one is remembered for the "Water Bottle" full tilt, all-out player brawl in the '80s that spilled off the ice and into the Beer Garden at Dane County Coliseum. Lots of people follow this one.
9. Maine vs UNH - A relatively recent arrival among the great rivalries, this one has all the hallmarks of two states' biggest athletic teams and statewide followings going at it.
10. UAA vs UAF - Another rivalry you've never seen, this one can get intense, as both schools want to be the flagship campus of Alaska, and these are also the only two real cities in the state.
Honorable mention:
Army vs Royal Miltary College (RMC) of Canada
Army vs Air Force
Northeastern vs BU or BC
Denver vs North Dakota
Minnesota vs all other Minnesota schools
Michigan Tech vs Northern Michigan
Lake Superior State vs NMU
Miami vs Ohio State
Ohio State vs Michigan
RPI vs Union
RPI vs Clarkson
Colgate vs Cornell
Harvard vs Yale
Vermont vs UNH
Cornell vs BU
Great post puck swami. You did your homework on this one.
1. North Dakota - I agree that they have the least amount of question marks. They also return quite a bit of scoring
2. SCSU - They return alot as well. Not sold on their goaltending, but still a solid #2.
3. Minn Duluth - The Connolly's are hard to miss. Really good college players.
4. CC - I think they will have 2 really good lines and the thrid and fourth lines will be right there with the rest of the league. Defense and Jow Howe will be the keys.
5. DU - they will recover from their losses over time.
6. UNO -The Dean Blais factor can't be denied
7. Minnesota - They just don't play very hard or desperate. They act like wins are an entitlement.
8. Wisco - Hard to put them here, but they lost so much.
9. BSU - I think the grind of playing good teams every week will catch up.
10. Mich Tech - I don't see a lot of wins here.
11. Anchorage - Same as Tech

Speaking as a "homer" I would put DU-CC in third if not tied for second.
And DU-North Dakota deserves to be in the top 10. When I was at DU, the NoDaks were the enemy and it seems to me they still are. You know, Cowboys vs Indians--Pioneers vs the Sioux.

I'll go with the homer pick with CC-DU in 2nd...
I still think that the DU NoDak stink is too young. You gotta wait for the balls to drop...
Viz could also still be waiting for his balls to drop...

I obviously missed it, but it sounds like some idiot from CC took trolling to a whole new, totally inappropriate level.

I was well over the borderline. I figured I would meet you on your turf.

Every time you post like an *******, I want to quote the idiotic comment you made where you claim not to be a troll. You're such a dick.

She will be waiting an eternity. You know, just because most college hockey fans are fat smelly loser dudes, that doesn't mean that women don't post on here, too.

As much as I love DU/CC games, I've been to all the rivalries I ranked above it, and those others are just a little bit more intense. I think DU/CC games are more tame affairs than they used to be 20 or 30 years ago. DU/North Dakota is a 60 year rivalry, but UND hates Minnesota and Wisconsin more than they hate us, although the gap is closing due to the intensity of the DU/UND rivalry since 2004 or so. When you are a team's #3 rival, I felt like it's not quite national top 10 material...

These past few seasons, I've gotten more excited about the DU/UND games than UND/Minnesota games.

We do? Could have fooled me. I hate DU way more than I hate Wisco. And I'm from Minnesota so I am forced to hate the Gophers before I actually admitted that I did. I also get the vibe from the players that they hate DU about as much as they hate Minny. So I definitely think the gap is very slim.
