I saw several intruiging comparisons with Brown hockey and lax. With coach Tiffany's success, things really look good for hockey. First, it was very clear that the lax players love playing for their coach, the same feeling that became obvious through the hockey season with Brendan. Second, Tiffany had a great game plan which Cornell could not cope with (obvious that Tiffany had spent substantial time in game prep), similar to what Brendan was displaying as the season progressed, especially as against RPI and Yale in the playoffs.Third, Tiffany was always in the game working with his players to take advantage of Cornell shortcomings he was perceiving as the game progress, something I saw a lot with Brendan on the bench. Fourth, Tiffany has taken players recruited by the previous coach and given them the opportunity to play their game, the same which happened with Harry Z and Jack McClellan.
Nice post, Mike. Lars deserves all the credit in the world for turning around a moribund lacrosse program. Same with Brendan and hockey. I stated on several occasions last spring that Brown would do very well if we hired a hockey coach in the Lars Tiffany mould. In addition to knowledge of their sports, both Lars and Brendan have a deep understanding of and a contagious passion for Brown.

Too bad the same wasn't true last weekend against Yale. I sat through raining, windy, 40-degree weather to watch Brown get demolished.

Not to go on a lax tangent, but this is a really great year for Ivy lacrosse! Heading into the last week, we have Princeton at 4-1, Cornell, Yale, and Brown at 3-2, and Harvard and Dartmouth at 2-3 (Penn is 1-5 and Columbia does not have a team). Potentially, we could end up with a 4-way tie for 2nd. Only Princeton is safe for the Ivy Tournament, which has 4 teams. The highest seed hosts the tournament. Brown can still be the top seed if we beat Dartmouth this Saturday, Princeton loses to Cornell, and Yale loses to Harvard (we would win the tie-breaker between CU and PU).

So come out and support your Bears at Stevenson this weekend! I believe it starts at 1. A playoff berth is on the line, and the playoffs are our only hope of making the NCAA Tournament, after a somewhat subpar season.

Re: Brown Hockey 2010-2011 - Onward and Upward

The Brown men's ice hockey team gathered this evening for the annual awards dinner and the 2010 recipients of the five major post-season awards were announced:

KEVIN R. POPE MEMORIAL TROPHY (Rookie of the Year)
This award, named in honor of the former Brown freshman hockey player, recognizes the first-year player who, in the eyes of his teammates, contributed most to the success of the team.

        2010 Recipient: CHRIS ZAIRES

CHARLES A. LANIGAN MEMORIAL TROPHY (Brown Hockey Association Award)
This award honors the late Brown trainer and is given to the senior who has shown the most improvement during his varsity career.

        2010 Recipient: JORDAN PIETRUS

PATRICK S. JONES MEMORIAL TROPHY (Coaches’ Award)
Awarded in honor of the former Brown hockey player, this award is given to that member of the varsity who generates the most spark and enthusiasm in building team spirit.

2010 Recipients: SEAN McMONAGLE, JORDAN PIETRUS, DAN ROSEN, HUNTER THUNELL, DEVIN TIMBERLAKE, SCOTT VAN der LINDEN and AARON VOLPATTI

CLASS OF 1936 HOCKEY TROPHY (Most Valuable Player)
This trophy is awarded annually to that player who, through sportsmanship, performance and influence, contributed most to the sport at Brown.

        2010 Recipient: AARON VOLPATTI

CHARLES A. ROBINSON, JR. MEMORIAL TROPHY FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Honoring the late Brown classics professor, this trophy is given annually to the letterman who has achieved the highest degree of academic excellence over the first seven semesters.

2010 Recipient: SCOTT VAN der LINDEN
        LET'S GO BRUNO!

Actually the terms of the Charles Lanigan Memorial Trophy were changed in 1998 to "honor the player who best represented the hockey program both on the ice and in the community." Jordan Pietrus certainly fits the bill.

Evidently, the terms of the Lanigan Trophy have reverted back to the old language that Bruno mentioned. Thus, I stand corrected.

In a very moving ceremony during the 2010 Senior Athletic Banquet last night, Jordan Pietrus was presented the Derek Hynes Unsung Hero Award. The award honors Derek Hynes, a former hockey player at the U. S. Military Academy (West Point) who left a permanent mark at his Alma Mater for his character and dedication. Derek Hynes was killed in Afghanistan in September of 2006.

Mr. and Mrs. Hynes, the parents of Derek Hynes, attended the dinner and sat at the hockey team's table. It was imposible to remain composed as Mr. Hynes read from Lieutenant Derek Hynes' diary. Derek Hynes was a young man of enormous character, who left this world way before his time.

Bruno needs that one surprise recruit who wants to come to Providence and be the star. Get him, win a few games and other will follow. No reason on Earth why Brown should EVER lose a kid to a Providence College or another non BC/BU school in Hockey East if he can get thru admissions. If RIT can do it, why can't Brown?

Brown has several kids going there who would have killed to go to Providence but were not offered. Great school but many kids want Hockey East.

Brown's competition is Yale, Princeton and Dartmouth, not Providence College or RIT. We've won a few battles with those three schools in the past, but not enough. However, the tide is beginning to change.

I've promised the Brown Athletic Department that I won't get into details about recruiting until the kids matriculate, so for now I'll just say that the future looks bright.

You can't turn down the Ivy League for Providence College. It's not like the Friars have a huge pipeline to the NHL like Wisconsin, Michigan, or BC does.

I thought they failed to capitalize on the Danis years. If he had played for a Hockey East school, he would have been a national star.
