  • Re: Notre Dame hockey off-season...beware the "I'ds" of March and other ponderings

Either people are paying waaay too much attention to my rumor-mongering, or I am a great speculator, but it sounds as if BC is here Friday, October 22nd. If that is the case, that should seal ND's schedule.

    Let the games begin!

Nothing (outside of the regular season) is assured in sports. Something I think last year's team spent all of 2009-2010 either forgetting, or not taking seriously enough.

From the opening faceoff until that last horrible weekend in Columbus, they looked like they were playing thinking all those post season game printed on every schedule were theirs for the asking.

I'm taking a wait-and-see attitude. All I hope for is they approach every game with focus and effort and pull towards the same goal. That alone would be a 180° turnaround from most of last year. And since on paper the team will still be plenty talented, it may even be enough to see a second weekend (or more) of post season hockey.

It probably won't end up being any big deal (community service, maybe out for a game or two)... Steve Summerhays was picked up for underaged drinking, along with a bunch of other current and incoming ND athletes (including basketball and football) when police busted a party in South Bend.

While I'm grateful that he didn't resist a la Palmieri, I have to admit I'm torn about all these shenanigans involving the athletes.

I think all drugs and drinking should be legal at age 18...forbidden fruit, and all... but I almost feel differently when one of those involved in a virtual rite of passage is a scholarship athlete--and a scholarship athlete to a university where a degree in basket weaving will earn him more money in a year than many will make in 3.

I realize that sounds unfair, but life is, well, unfair. Different people are held to different standards. No one in his right mind could expect me to solve the easiest math problem that Craig P. could solve after undergoing a lobotomy.

Palmieri's choices are not what turned me off to him being in an ND jersey, but they sure solidified those feelings. I'm holding out hope that Sheahan learned a good lesson and matured greatly (given that he did just fall off the turnip truck). I'll reserve my opinion about Summerhays until I see him in a suit and tie in the stands the opening weekend.

Now, what I'm really curious about is how Coach Jackson will discipline these players. Off the top of my head, I can't recall him ever facing this at LSSU.

I hope soon we can start posting about hockey...

No he really didn't face anything this serious during his tenure with LSSU but trust me, Jackson hasn't changed all that much.....the players in question will certainly "hear" from him.

Actually it wasn't just Summerhays. I believe the entire freshman class found their names on the police blotter in this sweep by the excise police. Throw Sheahan and Palmieri into the mix of people awaiting potential discipline and if you want to field a team to play , you'll have to stagger the suspensions over the course of a game or three.

Oh, I fully expect that. I imagine that he will be wanting some liquid lunches after the headaches he must be getting from his players.

If that isn't motivation enough for this team to turn last season into a distant memory and prove it was an anomaly, I can't imagine what would be. Coach Jackson needs to go to Kinko's, have that quote printed in large block letters on a neon posterboard, laminate it and hang it up in the locker room.

LSSU is a smaller school on the national scene, it was likely things like this were easier to keep quiet, and swept under the rug. Also, I would have to think that with LSSU being so close to the Canadian Border, kids going over there to legally drink would have toned down some of the shenanigans up there as well.

                          {sigh}

Joe Lavin?! Really?! He was my pick to wear the "C" this season. Along with Riley Sheahan wearing an "A".

Although, from a disgusted fan's point of view, apparently Lavin can "lead", as it was his party (complete with a punch-throwing melee) and he led a whoooole lot of underage athletes to drink.

Other than the coaching staff, who on earth is going to lead this team? Oooh. There's an idea. The coaching staff gets to wear the letters on their suit jackets.

My guess is, come the start of the season, IHF has it correct. Lots of staggered suspensions. But...I'll add to IHF's statement that no one wears a letter for the first month or so.

I understand that kids do this. Their frontal lobes are not fully developed (in fact, the frontal lobes are still a few years away from completion, even for a person Lavin's age), but (see below) scholarship athlete, Notre Dame, target on your back, different standard.

Please. Pretty please. Engage said brain.

I'm sure by now everyone has heard some of the additional details about the arrests of dozens of Notre Dame students and student/athletes. I'm sure initially some people thought that this was simply a case of over-zealous South Bend and Indiana Excise police looking to make a bunch of easy arrests.

In light of what has now been released to the press, perhaps we should look at this differently. What does one expect the South Bend Police Department to do when a call is received after 1:00 a.m. of a large fight on the corner of a fairly busy intersection? They responded to a scene of more than a little chaos. And when they arrived, people got scared and began acting even more chaotic. In what world does anyone expect the police to simply stand by the curbs and on the sidewalk and just let folks scatter, without any real indication of just what was going on? Right or wrong, fair or foul, what idiot doesn't know that arrests are coming in this kind of a scenario. Why continually put yourselves in these kinds of situations? So is it a surprise that under the situation dozens of arrests followed? After what has already happened in the football and hockey programs in the last few months is it asking too much for a little common sense to prevail for a while?

Yes, college students will behave inappropriately. Yes they will behave immaturely. But is it asking too much for one who IS 21 to know that perhaps he shouldn't be hosting a party full of underage drinkers? Especially when a number of them are his own freshman teammates? It isn't like he didn't know for sure a good number of those drinking were not yet 21. Having a good time, even a good time that goes a little beyond the limits of the law, doesn't necessarily mean an arrest. But use your frigging heads. If it is too much to ask of a bunch of freshman (some of course who are probably almost old enough to drink, these are hockey players after all) to know when they are crossing a little too far over the line, it probably isn't too much to ask a 21 year old Junior to know better. Especially one who likely was going to be carrying some of the burden of leadership for this team in the upcoming season.

After what happened with Kyle Palmieri and Riley sheahan, and Mike Ragone, and especially Matt James, these hockey players (and the other athletes as well) behaved in a stupid and immature fashion. But what's worse, they behaved selfishly. Their own fun on a Friday night was more important to them than perhaps their own welfare. Fine, you want to drink and as a result deal with the consequences that may arise from that decision, go ahead. But what about your teammates who AREN'T getting arrested? Who aren't doing anything that moves the team backward?

I'm sure my daughter drank a little before she turned 21. I suspect its possible she may have even had "too much" once or twice. I understand kids will do things we may wish they wouldn't do. Yet she was able to do it without ever running afoul of the law, without ever really running afoul of her parents -- both of whom were fairly strict in terms of discipline, without putting her own safety or the safety of others in any real jeopardy, and without risking a promising future in her military career. All this while turning 18, 19, 20, 21.... While the father in me knows without a doubt his girl is the greatest thing in the world, is she really that much smarter than a whole bunch of Notre Dame students? It's looking more and more likely she is...

Come to think of it...based on the block of Washington Street that this occurred in, wasn't this at the Hockey House? So wouldn't all the seniors have participated? Joe Lavin may be listed on the lease, so he's the adult in trouble for providing alcohol, but I can't believe the other seniors were at the library while all this was going on.

"Why, as a matter of fact, I suggested starting a hockey program to Father Callahan, our president. He was downright interested until we came to the use of sticks, and then he threw up his hands. He said, 'No, that game is not for our University. Notre Dame will never endorse any game that puts a club in the hands of an Irishman.' " -- Knute Rockne: All American

Well, there's no telling who was or wasn't there, other than if you were arrested, I guess its pretty likely you were there. As well, there's no telling exactly what happened unless you were there (and I'm guilty of this as well in my previous posts) and right now there is a whole lot of stuff flying around out there about the tactics used by the police, who coordinated the response, whether or not this was actually a raid by the excise police, just what the scenario really was. To hear some say it, the authorities over reacted in an extreme way. To hear the authorities describe it, they reacted with restraint and only the safety of the partiers in mind and sought only to enforce the law and effectively respond to a call of complaint. The truth is somewhere in the middle of that more than likely. Isn't it always?

My biggest issue will always be I don't want my athletes acting in such a fashion as to bring problems to their teams or to the university. We always talk about how the position law enforcement officers are in means we hold them to a higher standard, and I agree with that. But we are giving a lot to these student/athletes. Asking them to do the same isn't all that far-fetched is it?
