I've been to Detroit many times in the last 5 years, and was there for the 1990 NCAAs when Wisconsin blew out Colgate for all the marbles. Yes - the streetscape is somewhat sad, and the People Mover experience was kind of surreal.

That said, I've had some good times in Greektown, and really enjoyed the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. I have yet to see the Art museum, the Motown museum and Science center, so they may be on the agenda if Denver makes it to the Big Dance. I also plan to eat some pierogis or paczki's in Hamtramck, the polish neighborhood. And if there is time, maybe hit the new waterfront.

Wasn't this the premise for the movie "Judgment Night"? (Although I think that movie was supposed to be in Chicago.

Great idea!!! With the muggings that would take place by the Saturday title game, you'll have Crips and Bloods filling up half the place. Maybe each gang could sponsor a team and one wears blue and the others wear red.

And don't forget about the booming business of kidnapping people to steal their organs to sell on the black market down there. Quite lucrative. If you wake up in a tub of ice without your kidneys, it'll really be a "frozen four"!

Just as long as the NCAA gives us enough notice so I can master my "Crip Walk".

                Ouch! Good one! haha

But seriously the Foxtown area is nice, and Greektown is by there, which was a great place to hang out for the basketball final four! And I don't recall any major issues with the Final Four last year, I would say biggest deterent is just that it is the Grand Finale of college hockey in a football area!

That's the one honest beef I'm willing to concede here. The sight lines are just not going to be great for the most part.

The People Mover will get you around to a decent amount of downtown without needing a car.

We've had to walk back after the people mover stopped and had no problems. Whether or not you 'feel' it is safe is a personal thing.

Either way the city will continue to get bashed, but if you go into it with a decent attitude, you are much more likely to enjoy yourself.
My philosophy when being in the D is "DON'T BE STUPID." In every city you have to keep your wits about you, and if you don't do anything to provoke anyone you will be fine.

I'm from the Detroit area, and have spent a lot of time downtown and even venturing out to where my dad lived off of 6 mile and visited family that still lives in the city close to 8 mile. I have NEVER had a problem in the city. All you trolls out there sound like people from west of Ann Arbor "If you go to Detroit, you're going to get shot/mugged/etc." It's really getting old.

If you're looking for stuff to do, there are museums downtown (art museum, Detroit Science Museum), the original Motown studios on W. Grand Blvd., Henry Ford Museu and Greenfield Village in Dearborn (15 minute drive), among other interesting sites. I personally like just wandering around and looking at the historic buildings downtown.

There are plenty of places to eat mostly located in greektown, but there are others up Woodward. If microbrews are your thing, there are a few located downtown.

I agree that Ford Field isn't the greatest place to watch a hockey game, but if I can make the 8 hour trek down, I will. I love going to Detroit.

In the 1950's the NCAA Ice Hockey Championships were held at the Broadmoor Resort. Next month Detroit will host. Progress? Not if you read this article from the 1957 Harvard Crimson ....

Well put. Frozen Four weekend coupled with opening day is going to make it a great time to be in the city. Can't wait. I've been heading to college hockey at the Joe for 24 out of the 32 years I've been alive. Tiger stadium, CoPa, Fox, etc. You get the picture. Not once have I had a bad experience.

And for those people who feel the need to bash the city for it's bums here's a tip:

When they ask "What's the greatest nation in the world?" just answer "Donation, and I sent mine to (insert Haiti, New Orleans, etc. here), so I'm all out."

                        Works every time.

I have been to Detroit for work a few times. Yes, I did enjoy myself there but honestly, I had a better time in Baghdad in 2004 that in Detroit last year. I have seen both Verizon's and AT&T's map of the city where they show where they have cell towers and mark of "red zones" where the techs are not allowed to enter for repair 30 minutes before sundown until dawn without police escort. It is as if the whole map is red. Even central Detroit is full of red zones. I know that there are around JLA, just do not remember how close or how big.

The problem I have is that with my FF Fan Guide the NC$$ did not give me a "red zone" map. I take it that no one else got one too.

95% of the reason I made no plans on going this year was Ford Field. That really, really sucks. The other 5% was Detroit. I have been there, know I can have a good time, but I made no plans as of yet. Only looking now, because my team has a chance in being there.

If it wasn't for the possibility of Denver making it (I will also make an exception if UAH makes it too), no way I'd be going.

Loved the article! Things have changed a little since then, especially the CC women.

I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit and both of my parents grew up in the city. I am really baffled that people are still actually defending this city. It is far and away the biggest hell hole in the entire country. 95% of it looks like Bahgdad right after a United States bombing brigade just flew over it and dropped 10,000 bombs.

Opening day for the Tigers will be a lot of fun though.

The city itself probably only ranks higher than Gary, Indiana and another Michigan jewel...Flint.
                              TECH STILL SUCKS!

We're not defending the city. We're defending the downtown area, you know, that 5% area where no bombs dropped. It's also the area where FF attendees should be all weekend.
