Upon some research, I found these facts.
    1) Mikesch's wife is a prof at FU.
    2) Pat's brother, Scott Mikesch, was FU hockey's inaugural coach.

I'm willing to bet that being head coach at Finlandia, which is a tiny private school in a mediocre-at-best D3 conference, would mean he'd have to accept a significant pay cut over being an assistant at Tech.

Unless he's going to be forced out anyway, or is really anxious to run his own ship, the fact that he's applied for a USHL head coaching job would seem to indicate that he's holding out for a better job in a better league.

Through very knowledgeable sources, the FU coaching job only pays about $15k, which is why prior coaches have doubled as a university recruiter or helped run the gym/weight room area. Assistants don't get paid, so it's basically a one-man show with very little compensation in regards to the amount of time it takes to run it. Pat Mikesch will not be their next coach.

Maybe Finlandia's problem is that they think 15k is a "competitive salary" according to the job listing.

The bottom line is that whatever they are paying, Finlandia is most likely looking for a young local who will work as cheaply as possible. Mikesch has applied for at least one USHL position, which says he's a lot more serious and ambitious than the Finlandia job.

EDIT: Wow, $15k is incredibly low. I would've guessed $30k.

He should start a Houghton-Hancock based NAHL team.

I think Derby should apply for the FU job. One, slightly odd, far-fetched option for the Tech assistant, would be Dan Giachino.

                      This is not a full-time position. I don't doubt that it's in line with other D3 programs - it's a side job.
Barely a step up from being a high school coach with a day job (usually teaching in either case).

Well it's a job and therefore is competitive in Michigan. They could pay in sugar cubes and it would be competitive.

Umm, no. The original Pizza Works is in Calumet - local and awesome. Two Applebee's/Chili's/Olive Garden/Red Robster/*Insert Generic Casual Dining Chain Here* is more than enough.
