  • CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

The road to the Joe takes a turn in to Marquette. Alaska had a pretty easy time taking out Western, while NMU had the Bye.

Three ties and one win for NMU between these two. The week off and staying home has to been an advantage over playing two games and traveling. Should be a fun week and a long week waiting for Friday night.

If Nothern is to advance, it'll take three games. Alaska is on a big roll (8-0-2 in their last 10) and could very well take this.

They have two players with 40+ points and their goalie's numbers are just as good as Stewarts.

With Alaska 8th in the Pairwise, two wins by NMU would greatly improve their chances for an at-large bid. However, I'm not too sure the Cats can slow the Nanook's momentum.

The Nanook's momentum? They have ONE solid win in their last 10 games and have a sub .500 record on the road. We've only lost one game at home since October. I'm a little confused by your post...sandbagging a bit?

NMU should sweep this series. I'm hoping for a huge turnout from the Marquette/NMU community, as this is really one of the best teams we've had in 10+ years.

A trip to the semifinals is on the line, but the winner of this series also may just earn itself an NCAA bid. UAF could still possibly get a bid if it loses in three games, but NMU would definitely be on the outside looking in with a series loss.

UAF might be 8-0-2 in its last 10 games, but NMU is 7-1-2 in its last 10 (and 11-3-4 in its last 18).

Both of the previous matchups in Marquette saw the home school jump out to early leads before UAF rallied. NMU led 2-0 in the Friday game before the Nanooks came back to tie, outshooting the WIldcats 12-2 in the third period and overtime. NMU zipped to a 3-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the Saturday game and held on for a 3-2 win. (On the other hand NMU used third-period goals to earn ties both nights in Fairbanks, including a two-goal rally the second night.)

The Nanooks have outscored their opponents 27-8 in their current six-game win streak (an average score of 4.5 to 1.3).

Mark Olver 19-27-46 is probably the top forward in the CCHA and senior Brian Stewart has been strong in net (2.39 gaa, .926 save percentage, 15-9-7).

UAF has perhaps the conference's top line in Andy Taranto (17-24-41), Dion Knelsen (19-21_40) and Dustin Sather (10-14-24) --- dont know if they line has a nickname but I might suggest the Dandy Knection as a combination of their first names and Knelsen/Connection -- and sophomore goaltender Scott Green-eggsand-ham has similar numbers to Stewart (2.12 gaa, .922 save percentage, 18-9-9).

Id like to point out that Green-eggsand-ham allowed all three goals during a reading of "Green Eggs and Ham." Maybe he was listening to that more than watching the game!

Re: CCHA Second Round: Alaska @ NMU

One key component in the series if we are to prevail is a sold out Berry. We need the puckheads to canvas campus and be sure to get a record number of students to the game. in fact we should push for an attendance record at the BEC. We don't want to count on the community at large when the students make the games more fun anyway. With a price of only $5 per ticket every student on campus should want to be there, great fun for the price of a shoop. Get something on your facebook pages encouraging such and get it rolling starting now. Let's sell it out by midweek so the local media outlets can push the news of sold out which will add to the excitement and even more fans finding their way in somehow.

Pack the Berry and its a Good Time to be a Wildcat!!!!!

I'm optimistic, but I believe these games will be much tighter. We have to play our A-game, play with emotion, out-play our opponent, and don't take Alaska lightly.

I really hope everyone gets on board, Support the Cats, Pack the Berry, and truely make this an experience for the Seniors, the Team, the Fans, and the Community (The Fans can be that 6th man on the ice!!!!)

                LETS GO CATS!!!!

I expect this one to go 3. These two teams were almost dead even in regular season head to head. NMU should have an advantage at home, but for the first time in recent memory the 'Nooks are clicking in March. Should be a good series.

I think Billy is right. It’s probably a good time to shake some rust off your backup goalie and rest your starters. But I have to tell you, we are playing somewhat better hockey of late, and hope to at least give your guys a good game.

I guess either team could sweep, but given the recent past, I doubt either team is sleeping easy.

This should be a very good series. The Nooks just need to take the crowd out of the game early.

                    Go Nooks!

I suggest NMU takes fewer penalties this weekend.

1-10 on the PP for Alaska is not a stat my heart could take very well during a playoff game.

Speaking of Alaskans, is Billy Smith going to heal up in time for this series?

I'm disappointed that Western isn't making its annual trip up the U.P. for playoff time, but the Alaska series should be a very entertaining series. Is it Friday yet?

He wasnt even at Senior Night, so I would assume his season is over.

Alright, Huge series for both teams as a trip to the Joe, and the NCAAs is on the line in the 2nd round. Lets see how things match up?

                              Top 4 Scorers:
                              NMU- 1. Mark Olver 19-27-46
                              2. Gregor Hanson 13-20-33
                              3. Justin Florek 10-19-29

                              UAF:
                              1. Andy Taranto 17-24-41
                              2. Dion Knelson 19-21-40
                              3. Dustin Sather 10-14-24

*Its obvious who the players to watch are in this series on offense. Junior Mark Olver and Freshman Andy Taranto. I'll give the edge to Mark Olver due to the fact this his previous two seasons, he has been to the Joe and has a ton of playoff experience.

                              Goalies:
                              NMU- Stewart 15-9-7 2.32/ .919

                              Alaska- Greenham 18-9-9 2.12/ .922

*Greenham has the better stats, but more minutes played (2119 to 1832). Its no secret that Stewart struggled early in the season and his minutes show that. Stewart is a goalie that has put this team on his back during the playoffs.

                              Special Teams: Power Play
                              NMU: 34/163 20.9% 9th in the nation
                              Alaska: 37/196 18.9% 25th in the nation

                              Penalty Kill:
                              NMU: 177/209 84.7% 13th in the nation
                              Alaska: 125 for 149 83.9% 19th in the nation

                              Combined Special Teams:
                              NMU: 211/372 56.7% 1st in the nation
                              Alaska 162/345 47% 52nd in the nation

*NMU is much improved on the PK in the 2nd half of the season. The PK was around 78% early in the season, and it speaks volume how they've worked it up to over 84%. It should also be noted that NMU's home PK is over 90% for the season.

                              "X-Factor"
Berry Events Center. NMU is at home, in the 2nd round of the CCHA playoffs. The crowd is going to be loud, and hopefully sold out. The Student Section should be rocking and loud and on Greenham. The team that wins Friday night will win this series in my opinion. It may take three games, but to battle back and win Saturday (for the losing team Friday) will take too much energy for Sunday's game to complete the comeback. Its going to be an emotional weekend for both teams with large momentum swings back and forth.

NMU has lost only 4 games at home all season, the last coming December 4th against Michigan State. Three of the four losses came by 1 goal as well.
