I do not like the shootout, and find ties quite acceptable.
Sometimes, a tie is a tie- both teams were even, whether that was bad even or good even- they were even. Seems to be ok that they tied to me.
Some times a tie is a victory or a loss- getting that tying goal in the last few min of a game and holding onto that is a pretty good way to finsih a game. Or if you've managed to hold a high power team to equal goals while being out played- then a tie is a win.
Why in the world do we NEED to define a winner during the regular season- I just don't understand that. The regular season is a body of work to determine if and where you belong in a post season event. There's no NEED to have a winner.
Anyway, having seen one SO, that was more than enough for me. Boring.

Me too. I wanted to leave, but curiousity kept me in my seat. The one shootout I saw was enough.
I think basketball games should be resolved with slam dunk contests (It's not like they play defense in the NBA anyway). That would be even more awesome than hockey shootouts. An individual skill competition that keeps Joe Redneck entertained because while he has no problem marrying his cousin, he hates ties that are like "kissing your sister".
I propose next year all CCHA games where the score remains tied after 5 minutes of overtime, the home team should pick the intermission game (tricycle race, frozen t-shirt, etc) of their choice for the teams to compete at to determine a winner. This will help bring in the casual fans who have always wanted to be a college athlete. They may get an opportunity to try the same competitions at intermission.
Ties are a part of life and are often the correct result of a game. There is not a winner in every battle, but the outcome of each battle helps to determine the winner of the war. Accept the tie and keep the integrity of the team sport.

But man do the casuals love it. I was at OSU over the weekend and despite there being 9000 people in the Schott (maybe 2000 Miami fans), you could hear a pin drop in the OSU fans sections for 65 minutes of a hard fought game. Suddenly when the game goes to a shootout you would have thought they just won the Stanley cup the way that place started cheering.

Couldn't have had anything to do with securing home ice in the first round.
No trees were harmed in the making of this post. A few electrons got excited though.
You are normally a voice of reason and logic on this forum, but I fear you are missing a central point. Americans DEMAND that ANY type of competition arrive eventually at a point that separates WINNERS from LOSERS. Whether in business, athletics, or armed combat; there MUST be a winner and a loser. Anything less starts us down that 'slippery slope' leading to a "Thank You For Participating" award for everybody.
...
Surely, you see the error in your logic now. Ties disrupt the natural ebb and flow of the American Dream and, therefore, need to be broken. Thank you.
My sarcasm detector is broken. But I don't care. This is an epic freakin' rant. And I'm the kind of guy who can appreciate an epic freakin' rant. Well done, my friend.
Regardless of how serious you are, you may have just gone bat **** crazy right now. And God bless you for it.

BRING BACK PAT RICHTER!!!
At his graduation ceremony from the U of Minnesota, my cousin got a keychain. When asked what UW gave her for graduation, my sister said, "A degree from a University that matters."

Buckeyes don't have it all going on upstairs, so... don't count on it.

Amen to that except he forgot to mention that Americans aren't too keen on stalemates when it comes to war and politics, two things the common person isn't all that impressed with these days.

While the true Buckeye hockey fans (such as those who post in these here parts) were rightfully cheering for a good showing by their team and the much needed league points, the vast majority of the fans seemed to be at their first game of the season and probably didn't even know they were battling for the home ice. Most of them also had no idea that a shootout win was not an outright win, if their always-respectful and ever-creative taunts on our way out of the arena were any indication. We didn't mind though, because we were busy deciding what to do with our free weekend coming up.
Love and honor to Miami forever and a day. Go RedHawks!
Don't take this the wrong way but I couldn't disagree more with the people saying they don't like the shoot out. This might sound wrong, but who cares what you want? Why not ask the players what they want? Afterall, they are the ones who go to the rink everyday for practice and make numerous sacrifices to their personal and social lives to be college hockey players...why shouldn't they have a say? I know people pay their hard earned money to attend games but let's face it, shoot out or not, you still go to the games! I'd bet you players would rather go to a shoot out and lose than leave the rink with the unsatisfactory feeling of a tie. For regular season hockey, the shoot out is great and should be here to stay!

And that's the point. Fans never stayed away because games can end in a tie. They'll never make the point to come if they otherwise would not in the hopes of seeing a SO.

I would hope no player would EVER leave the rink satisfied their opponent earned more points than they did. This has to be one of the more stupid things I have ever seen posted on USCHO. If they do please let them play for whatever team you root for. I wouldn't want them within a thousand miles of my team.
