SIX NEW TEAMS GOING TO NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

UNION LAKE, MI - The votes are in, and six new teams will be competing at the 2010 American Collegeiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Men's Division 1 National Tournament, including Minot State University, Oakland University, Arizona State University, Robert Morris University Illinois, State University of New York at Canton, and Rutgers University.

Lindenwood University, the defending ACHA Men's Division 1 National Champions, laid claim to the #1 spot for the 14th consecutive ranking, receiving 36 of 37 first-place votes. Lindenwood has held the #1 spot since January 30, 2009. The Lions will be making their 6th consecutive appearance and will be looking to take home the 'Murdoch Cup' again.

Penn State University, Regular-Season Champions of the Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL), remained at #2 and, along with Iowa State, have now qualified for all nineteen ACHA Men's Division 1 National Tournaments. The Nittany Lions have played in the National Championship game in 12 of the 18 contested, easily doubling 2nd place Ohio's total of 6 National Championship game appearances. Penn State has won 5 National Championships, the last coming in 2003.

Ohio University, Regular-Season Champions of the Central States Collegiate Hockey League (CSCHL), held in the #3 spot, finishing one point behind Penn State in the rankings. The Bobcats will be making their 17th consecutive appearance, having won 4 National Championships, the last coming in 2004. Ohio has played in the National Championship Game 6 times.

The University of Illinois' fourth-ranked squad will be making their 13th consecutive appearance at the National Tournament, and 15th overall. Illinois has won two ACHA Men's Division 1 National Championships (2005 and 2008).

Iowa State University was edged out of the fourth spot by Illinois and settle in at #5. The Cyclones have qualified for all nineteen ACHA Men's Division 1 National Tournaments and won the Inauguaral ACHA Men's Division 1 National Championship in 1992.

Liberty University stands pat in the #6 position and will be making its 4th consecutive appearance at the Men's Division 1 National Tournament. The Flames were the 2006 Men's Division 2 National Runners-Up and a Men's Division 1 National Semi-Finalist in 2008.

The University of Oklahoma keeps the #7 spot and will be making its 5th consecutive appearance, while

#8 Oakland University returns to the tournament after a one-year hiatus. The Golden Grizzlies will be making their 3rd appearance at the Men's Division 1 National Tournament. Oakland was the 2007 Men's Division 1 National Champions, and won the 2004 and 2006 Men's Division 2 National Championship.

#9 Minot State University returns to the National Tournament for the first time since 2004 and will be making its 6th appearance. The Beavers qualified for 5 straight tournaments from 2000-2004.

The University of Central Oklahoma is the big gainer, vaulting up three spots to come in at #10, and will be making its second consecutive appearance at the National Tournament. The Bronchos program started up in 2006-07.

Arizona State University slides down a spot to #11, but will return to the National Tournament for the first time since 2006. The Sun Devils will be making their 6th appearance.

Kent State University equals Central Oklahoma as the big mover in the polls, bolting up three spots to take over the #12 spot. The Golden Flashes will make their 4th consecutive appearance, and 7th overall. Kent State was on the outside looking-in, but Slippery Rock University, Regular-Season Champions of College Hockey Mid-America (CHMA), declined their auto-bid, securing the final at-large berth available for Kent State. The remaining autobids secured the final four spots available to round out the field of sixteen:

    Stony Brook University, Regular-Season Champions of the Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association (ECHA), will be making their 3rd consecutive appearance at the Men's Division 1 National Tournament after 9 consecutive appearances at the Men's Division 2 level. The Seawolves were the 2003 Men's Division 2 National Runners-Up;

    Tournament host, Robert Morris University Illinois, returns to the tournament for the first time since 2006, and will make its 3rd overall appearance;

The State University of New York at Canton, Regular-Season Champions of the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League (ECHL), will make their inaugural appearance in only their second season of ACHA competition; and Rutgers University, Regular-Season Champions of Northeast Collegiate Hockey League (NECHL) will make their inaugural appearance at the Men's Division 1 level. The Scarlet Knights played and hosted the 1998 Men's Division 2 National Championships before moving to Men's Division 1.

    The breakdown by leagues:
6 - Central States Collegiate Hockey League
    6 - Independent
1 - Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association
1 - Eastern Collegiate Hockey League
1 - Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League

Re: 2010 Acha Division I National Tournament Selections

Now what if they did this like the NCAA:

    Region 1 -- Host Lindenwood
    1. Lindenwood
    8. Minot State
    9. Oakland
    16. Rutgers

Region 2 -- Host Penn State
    2. Penn State
    7. Oklahoma
    10. Central Oklahoma
    15. Canton

    Region 3 -- Host Ohio
    3. Ohio
    6. Liberty
    11. Arizona St.
    14. Robert Morris (IL)

    Region 4
    4. Illinois
    5. Iowa State
    12. Arizona State
    13. Kent

Games are Friday / Saturday OR Saturday / Sunday
Friday / Saturday times are 4:00 and 7:00
Saturday / Sunday times are 1:00 and 4:00

Region winners then go to the Phinal Phour site where we play Friday night and Saturday night at 4:00 and 7:00.

I know it will never happen, but the gate may be better for the regions with 4 host teams as opposed to the nationals with one host team.

Looks like a great tournament! It nice to see a mix of some of the powerhouse ACHA teams and also six new teams, just shows how talent is growing across the ACHA and programs.

That looks like a great setup, and would be a lot of fun to watch, but probably not going to happen, especially since it would increase travel costs, and really affect some of the schools with smaller budgets and ones with large distances.

First off your seeds and teams are wrong, you have no Stony Brook, 2 Arizona States and Kent at the wrong seed.

If the NCAA did this they would surely shuffle the teams to account for conference matchups and travel cost and attendance.

The Tournament would look more like this,

        Region 1 -- Host Lindenwood
        1. Lindenwood
        2. Minot State
        3. Oakland
        4. Rutgers

Region 2 -- Host Penn State
        1. Penn State
        2. Oklahoma
        3. Central Oklahoma
        4. Robert Morris (IL) (moves to prevent CSCHL game)

        Region 3 -- Host Ohio
        1. Ohio
        2. Liberty
        3. Kent State (moves to prevent CSCHL game)
        4. Canton (Moves for Robert Morris)

        Region 4
        1. Illinois
        2. Iowa State
        3. Arizona St. (Moves so Kent can play in home state)
        4. Stony Brook

You could fool around with moving Central Oklahoma and Oakland for travel but an Oklahoma-Oklahoma matchup would be interesting in round 1.

Can someone explain to me why a team would decline an auto-bid to a National Championship tournament? Was there some type of incident or are there other reasons?

              Bad goaltending

SRU's top goalie broke his wrist.

              Starting Goalie 2.81 GAA (11-4-1)
              Backup A 5.66 GAA (2-3)
              Backup B 6.37 GAA (1-1)

All of those GAA numbers are against teams not in the Top 16. Ever game that a backup lost was against a team the starter had beaten.

It's not that the team didn't want to go it's just they didn't believe they could compete with their backup goalies and for a club team that has to pay its own way to the national tournament it wasn't worth it to them.
