  • The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Maybe a thread specific to the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games women's ice hockey tournament would be useful to the fans of the various participating national teams. Post any related info / articles deemed worthwhile and discuss...including the action on the ice when the puck drops.

One of my concerns in the US is televised coverage of course. I hope for complete, full game coverage of Team USA games at the very least. You never quite know what you're gonna get from US network coverage. I'd guess that's less of a concern for fans of the home team. I'm assuming more attention and televised coverage for the sport is the case north of the border.

Vancouver should be a great venue to showcase the sport...with perhaps bigger crowds than you might get elsewhere.

Can anyone post information about the actual venue? Seating capacity etc.

To anyone fortunate enough to attend, well...you're lucky.

    GO US A!

Just under the schedule are links to rink info pages.

It appears as though the majority of the women's hockey events as well as two Men's games will be played at the UBC Thunderbird arena. The venue will then be turned over to the Paralympics for the men's Sledge Hockey.

The balance will be played at what is temporarily being referred to as Canada Hockey Place (GM Place, home of the Canuckleheads - aka: the Garage) due in all liklihood to OOC rules as they pertain to free advertising. To my knowledge GM isn't exactly flush these days...and there is no free rides with OOC.

Intersting to note: - for the first time Olympic Ice Hockey will be played on NHL size ice at both of these venues.
      - Video replay will be incorporated into the games

You can be assured that many off the Womones hockey games will be covered by the Host country. Suspect that the Canada games will be on the main CTV network, with the Balance on TSN and TSN2. Either way, the PVR might be working OT.

Sportsnet is also carrying a large chunk of the games. Think I'll take a few days off in February...cough, cough...I feel a cold coming on.

Unfortunately I'll actually be in the US for about 5 days during the main event, and not in a traditional hockey market either. It means that I'll miss the extensive coverage from back home

Just over two weeks to go......

You can be rest assured that Feb 25 and Feb 28 will be booked free.

              Familiar faces

I posted this to Gophers thread. A good one to this thread as well. Many familiar faces. I do not have to care for broadcasting. I'll be in Vancouver and prepared for the the Sunday 14th game Fin vs RUS. First game and team has to win. Otherwise games are over. Not like in men's side. All teams will qualify to first play off round.

From what I read the Canucks will be on their longest road trip in team history in order to get GM Place ready for the games. I think they said that the trip will last from January 23rd-March 13th.

Here's an interesting article on Team USA' prepardness for the games:

Maybe this thread should be stickyed.

This is one of the things I was wondering about with regards to the venue. I think the women's game is better suited to the smaller ice sheet.

Heard last nite on the tube that the Canucks will travel 12,850 KM before
                    the road trip is over.

I wonder if the hockey is webcast? Streaming video on one of the Canadian Networks perhaps?

                        http://www.nbcolympics.com/tv-listin...=IH/index.html

All the games are televised on either MSNBC, CNBC, or USA. Most of the US games are on USA.

                          Agreed.

If they`ll permit.... In contrast I also think the men's game is more suited to the larger surface as it significantly increases flow. The biggest, fastest, most skilled players in the world will be facing off against each other and the fear is it is going to be like a ping pong match in there given the smaller NHL ice.

Tis the first time it`s occured so we`ll see.

I disagree. I think it is lame that the IOC allowed the COC and Vancouver committee to pull this stunt. It is called an Olympic sheet for a reason. IOC should have told 'em to take out four rows and refit GM Place, build a new facility, or take a hike.
