  • Father / Son Game

So looks like this weekend brings us a Father vs Son duel:

    Sunday, 1/24 - 2:00 pm

Manhattanville @ Morrisville = Phil Grady vs Brian Grady

I'm sure this must make for an interesting dinner table conversation!

Any other Father vs Son showdowns out there?

    Re: Father / Son Game

Man, for a moment there I thought the Grady's were playing, not coaching. I can see it now, young teenage couple has a son. Later, in his 30's, Dad goes back to college to get a degree and is the most successful walk on for the college's hockey team. Meanwhile, his son gets a scholarship to play hockey in another league. Sounds like a HBO miniseries, doesn't it? To answer your question, I don't know of any other father/son coaching rivals in DIV III, but maybe somebody else does.

I do mention this in my column.

In college football, the Bowdens went up against each other a number of times. And they were both head coaches as opposed to Phil now being an assistant coach.

I know there are others out there. I just can't remember them right now.

There was also the interesting case of one of the Yankees coaches who had a son who played for another American League team.

This actually happened. A few years ago they both played at UMass-Boston. Even made Sports Illustrated.

Didn't the son transfer to UMB from Babson for purposes of playing with, rather than against Dad?

I can't remember the details. I just know they both were on UMB. And the father was in his 50s if I recall.

It's been a while, but I saw them play at Kreitzberg, so it's been within the last 11 years. As I recall, the father is about my age - possibly a couple of years younger. I saw him take his helmet off for the Anthems, and that's when I knew which one was which - the father was as gray as I am now . That when I was still blonde.

While it is basketball (DePaul University Blue Demons), the father/son combo of Ray & Joey Meyer coached side-by-side for 13 years, with Ray Meyer as Head Coach from 1942-1984 (724-354) and Joey as Assistant Coach from 1971-1984 and Head Coach from 1984-1997 (231-158). Joey also competed for four seasons under his dad (1968-71) scoring 1,233 career points and serving as co-captain during his senior season. Now that is probably tops in father/son sports.

The Meyer family has nothing on the Riley family and their legacy at Army. The father, Jack, coached Army from 1950 to 1986 when he turned the reigns over to his son Rob. Rob coached the Black Knights from 1986 to 2004 and left the program to his younger brother, Brian. Brian, who spent 16 years behind the bench at Army as an Assistant, coaches Army to this day. That is 60 years of Riley hockey!

Why did Hamilton run out their basketball and hockey coaches? Grady has been nothing but a class act in college hockey and former basketball coach Tom Murphy was one of the best in the country. Murphy is at Northeastern as an assistant. Now Hamilton's basketball and hockey teams are a shell of of their former selves. Sad stuff as Hamilton moves it's entire program into the NESCAC.
