    Fixed.

Seriously, how hard is it for the refs to have enough balls to skate away from the bench after giving a brief explanation of the call? The refs in the WCHA should have more control of the game.

Sure, that'll happen in my lifetime.

Good point. But even the CCHA doesn't have a problem like this.

Not yet. I check every time I walk in. My guess is during the off season when they have more time.

Re: Unnecessary Delays for Referee Explanations

I was at those Mankato games. The refs took at least 15 minutes to sort things out two different times. Only part of that was to talk to Jutting. Most of that time was spent by the penalty boxes. It was a joke. Jutting does spend too much time talking to the refs but he had little to do with what went down Saturday night.

Re: Unnecessary Delays for Referee Explanations

I have watched a lot of non-WCHA games on TV over the years, and I have noticed that other conferences don't have this problem. Jutting and Gwoz are the two main offenders. As much as I dislike Gwozdecky for his lack of ethics, he is a master at working the officials.

Re: Unnecessary Delays for Referee Explanations

                1. I'm sure a lot of people would like an explanation of why a play that was initially not called a penalty was changed to a five-minute major after a 10-minute talk with the other team. Does Duluth keep a video monitor on their bench?

                2. I'm not sure the officials said that much to the MSU during the second delay. They talked to the UMD bench for a while...

                3. The third longest delay of the weekend was the long explanation that had to be given to UMD's bech after MSU scored to cut the game to 2-1 in the third period on Friday night. Again, it was a very poor call, but if your issue is with coaches taking away from the game and killing momentum that's pretty much your classic example of a free timeout.

As wrong as those coaches may be for their prolonged arguments with refs, the real offenders are the refs themselves who don't skate away to the face off circle and drop the puck the second they are done explaining their call (or no-call).

Re: Unnecessary Delays for Referee Explanations

I never reffed hockey at any level but did a fair amount of umpiring in baseball up to and including small college. The only time I entertained any kind of "lengthy" discussion with a coach was in the event someone had a question as to the application of a specific rule in a call that was made. Once they realized I knew the rule book as well or better than they did, they were usually satisfied. At any rate those "lengthy" discussions rarely lasted more than a minute or two. You give a quick explanation as to what you saw, or what the rule says, and you walk (or skate?) away.

Hell, its even harder in baseball because there is no quick way to make the coach responsible for making a mockery of the game with bench minors for delay or unsportsmanlike conduct.

This sounds simply like coaches taking liberties the officials should not be giving them in the first place. 99% of all calls made on the ice should require no explanation at all, even bad ones. I have never seen a game where 15 minutes should be needed to decide anything.

Re: Unnecessary Delays for Referee Explanations

I can understand when it takes a while for the refs to sort out penalties - you've got 12 guys out there and 3 or 4 refs - in the case of a scrum or some serious extracirriculars. That will happen from time to time, and better that they take the time to get the calls right than to rush and be incorrect. But some coaches definitely work the refs to the point of serious delays.

So, two separate issues there. Baseball never has the kinds of situations where you'd have to dole out a bunch of penalties like you get in hockey, especially if the linesmen go to try and break something up while the Ref is the only one looking to see what's going on.

I wouldn't say that he had little to do with it, although you are right that there was a lot of time spent at the scorekeeper's table.

For people who have a hard time believing this, the game was 3 hours long.
