  • Bottom Feeders Bracket/Futile Four 2010

The site selection process for the 2010 BFB/F4 will begin this weekend, when the tournament committee meets via telephone conference call. The committee will entertain all bids submitted to this board in a timely fashion, but reserves the right change their minds, and accept bids as late as they arrive.

Four suitably hideous sites will be chosen to host this year's regionals (March 26-28), and one particularly hideous venue will be blessed with the opportunity to host the "Futile Four" chumpionship weekend (April 2-4).

The only specific requirements to host are:

    1. Ice. Altho we would prefer the quality of ice surface to be inferior, we may consider locations with decent ice, if other criteria are met.
    2. Must be indoor, or at least under roof. Several have suggested outdoor locations, but we feel that 'outdoor hockey' events have become too 'chic', and are therefore inappropriate for an event of this calibre.
    3. No site that is home to any existing NCAA D1 or D3 team is eligible, nor are the practice rinks of any current NCAA team.
    4. While no 'carved in stone' standards exist, the committee has usually shown preference to sites that are inconvenient for travel, and are located in areas with little or nothing else to attract visitors.
    5. Special consideration is normally afforded to venues that: are in poor repair, have limited (or no) seating, have inadequate locker room and team facilities, are either uncomfortably warm or cold...especially if the building has unpleasant smells.
    6. Pictures of the venue or a link where pix can be found would be appreciated.

The site selection committee would like to let all bidders know that we are men of low moral character, and as such are perfectly willing to consider any form of bribery, kickback, bonus, premium or payola, provided that it come in the form of: cash or sexual favors.

Please do NOT use this thread to make a case why this team or that should or should not be included in the tournament field. There will be plenty of time to argue about that later.
Du hockey comme dans le temps!

My favorite time of year. I'll do my best to help find some atrocious venues.
Places I've seen a college hockey game: Agganis Arena, Alfond Arena, Bright Center, Consol Energy Center, Conte Forum, DCU Center, Fenway Park, Gutterson Fieldhouse, Houston Field House, Lawler Arena, Madison Square Garden, Matthews Arena, Mullins Center, Schneider Arena, Scottrade Center, Sears Centre, Tampa Bay Times Forum, TD Bank Sports Center, TD Garden, Tsongas Center, Tully Forum, Verizon Center, Verizon Wireless Arena, Walter Brown Arena, Wells Fargo Center, Whittemore Center

It's too bad that Tech has a viable shot of winning this tournament this year, because I would be more than happy to suggest George Gipp Arena in Laurium, MI for a Midwest regional.

Unfortunately, the ease of travel for the Huskies and likelihood that some Tech fans would actually show up to watch their team fail at hockey pretty much rule this one out unless Tech finds a way to pull a 9th place conference finish out of their a55es, thereby avoiding the Bottomfeeder Tourney. I wouldn't bet one cent on that outcome, so perhaps George Gipp Arena could simply be filed for future consideration.

Negotiations to bring in tSBFitW as the official house band of the Futile Four broke down when the booking company brazenly ignored our 574 pages of riders. We don't care what UPS says, we're a no-show unless we get that donkey, tanker truck of tequila and crate full of venomous cobras. And I hate to be the bearer of further bad news, but the bones kinda pulled an Axl Rose on the entire third floor of the official hotel when they found out. Looks like the B2 Networks production team will just have to ignore the stench of goat's blood and make do with busted TVs for the weekend.

Anyway, in lieu of a pep band, please enjoy this tape of early 90's dance music.

          LOL

I have 2 possible suggestions for regional sites:

1: St. Lawrence Centre. In the middle of a mall. Hey, there's people playing hock- OOOH, HOT TOPIC! *goes there instead* Oh wait, I don't think there even IS a hot topic there, you'd have to go all the way to Syracuse. Plus, any chance on getting a casino about 20 minutes away to open up betting on this?

2: Lake Placid. Fabulous Herb Brooks Arena standing there, but alas, the regional is played in the '32 rink.

BTW, would putting a tarp over an outdoor rink count? :P

For the Northeast regional, I'll nominate Hockey Town USA in Saugus, MA. This place is on the verge of collapsing, always smells funny, is always freezing, has a seating capacity of about 12, and has boards and glass that are in horrible shape- they actually lean away from the ice in some spots. No lie- I once played a game where they just used a piece of wood to replace a broken pane of glass. Also, if you started every game at 9 am or 5:30 pm, you'd guarantee that anyone who actually did want to go would have to sit in Boston rush hour traffic to get there. The only downside to choosing Hockey Town USA is that there is plenty of civilization around. It's right on Route 1, and there's a lot of good restaurants and shopping areas near it.

Edit: Forgot to mention that, as you can see in that 2nd pic, there actually isn't any glass on one side of the rink. There's just a big wall with a line on it that's supposed to represent where the glass would end. I feel that any little thing like this that leaves room for human error on the refs' part and changes the way the game is played would be good for the BFB/FF.

Also, there's no way an entire college team would fit on the tiny benches at this place. Even youth hockey teams with 3 lines and 2 d-pairings have to have some players stand up behind the bench.

I second this. It's also the worst ice on the face of the planet. The player's skates will be dull by halfway through the first period. And it's not even painted white underneath the ice- it's just circles painted on raw concrete.

Not to mention the hazard of the wiffle balls that fly at you out of the sky from the wiffle ball area above...

Oh, and there are holes under the boards near the zamboni entrance where many a stick can get caught and snap. Once in a game I played there the puck flew into the corner and disappeared into a hole.

The committee would be interested in more details about George Gipp Arena. Specifically, do the interior amenities live down to the expectations created by the gnarly exterior shot provided? Don't be discouraged by your proximity to Tech! Remember the regional seeding would (most likely) send the Huskies (assuming their nearly inevitable qualification) to some other distant regional...thereby making your concern about attendance moot. From what we can see, this looks exactly like what we're looking for...a positive dump in the middle of nowhere.

Having actually watched hockey in the Gipp I can second that it would be a definite candidate for a regional. For starters, the rink isn't any specific size, a lot smaller than NHL size ice. There are no seats for any spectators to sit, just benches to stand on to see over the boards. Also the glass goes about 2 feet up above the boards, injury to fans is a high possibility. Second both benches are tiny and there is only one door to the penalty box. Locker rooms are not near the ice and the ice plant is exposed on the ends. Like F2B&G said the possible problem is people actually showing up for the games. The Gipp is in a hockey crazy town with nothing to do, plus it's also about 2 blocks from another posters house.
