"It’s been a few years since the Western Collegiate Hockey Association was viewed nationally as the premier conference in college hockey."

they (uscho, and NCAA hockey writers) should be (IMO) starting with the premise the WCHA is the best annually since their NCAA Championship numbers prove this. In the 2000's thusfar WCHA has what, 5 titles? could be 6 come April.

    bring on the board war!

i'm sure its refering to the fact that the CHA has sent as many teams to the frozen four in the last 2 years as the WCHA
“Unless you’re Boston College, you don’t get here every year.”

The writers are correct in their assessment. The league's talent level and performance are clearly in a down cycle, and I don't believe the WCHA has been the best conference since 2006 (two teams in the frozen four, one of them won it). Last season was dismal from the WCHA perspective with nobody making it to the frozen four and all three tournament entrants nearly being knocked out in the first round (which would have happened had UMD not pulled off a crazy rally). 2008 wasn't much better with just UND advancing. Same goes for 2007 (although that had the infamous "region of death" with Michigan, UND, and MN together in Denver).

Re: w-t-f is uscho talking about?

2009 Tournament: 3 WCHA team made the tournament, North Dakota, Denver, and Minnesota Duluth. UMD was the only team to win a game, and they needed two goals and one horrible decision by Zane Kalemba to win their opening round game. UMD lost in the second round. Tale of the tape, 3 teams, 4 games, 1 win, 0 frozen four appearances, 0 titles.

2008 Tournament: 6 WCHA teams made the field, Wisconsin, St. Cloud State, Colorado College, North Dakota, Denver, and Minnesota. Of the six, only North Dakota and Wisconsin managed to win a game, with North Dakota eliminating Wisconsin in the regional final to advance. Wisconsin played Denver in the first round. In the semi-final of the Frozen Four, North Dakota was trounced by BC 6-1. Tale of the tape, 6 teams, 9 games, 3 wins, 1 frozen four appearance, 0 titles.

2007 Tournament: 3 WCHA teams made the field, Minnesota, North Dakota, and St. Cloud State. St Cloud State lost their first round game, while North Dakota and Minnesota both won. North Dakota and Minnesota met in the second round, limiting the conference's ability to send more than one team to the frozen four with North Dakota advancing. North Dakota proceeded to lose in the frozen four semi-finals, 6-4 to BC. Tale of the tape, 3 teams, 5 games, 3 wins, 1 frozen four appearance, 0 titles.

        Compared to Hockey East:

2009 - 4 Hockey East teams made the field, Vermont, BU, Northeastern, and New Hampshire. Only Northeastern lost in the opening round. Vermont and BU advanced to the frozen four, with BU knocking off New Hampshire en route. BU then knocked off Vermont in the semi-finals on their way to winning the national title. Tale of the tape, 4 teams, 10 games, 7 wins, 2 frozen four appearances, 1 title.

2008 - 2 Hockey East teams made the field, Boston college and New Hampshire. New Hampshire lost in the first round, while BC went on to win the National championship. Tale of the tape, 2 teams, 5 games, 4 wins, 1 frozen four appearance, 1 title.

2007 - 5 Hockey East teams made the field, BC, BU, Maine , UMass and New Hampshire. BU and UNH lost in the first round, while Maine and BC advanced to the frozen four. BC lost in the final. Tale of the tape, 5 teams, 11 games, 6 wins, 2 frozen four appearances, 0 titles.

Hockey East's Record vs. the WCHA in the tournament during those three years:

        2009: 1-0
        2008: 2-0
        2007: 2-0
        Cumulative: 5-0

HE has 3 national championship game appearances and 2 titles during that time compared to no championship game appearances for the WCHA.

HE record in all games vs. the WCHA over that period, 22-18-5. Fairly indistinguishable, but at the end of the day, still favors HE.

Not trying to start a HE vs. WCHA flame fest because if you look at 2006, the WCHA wins a title over a HE team, or 2005 when they had all four teams at the frozen four, just providing some evidence to support the writer's claim that "It’s been a few years since the Western Collegiate Hockey Association was viewed nationally as the premier conference in college hockey."

again not trying to fan the flames, just providing detail

Isn't Minnesota the only team that matters? and isn't Minnesota in the WCHA? Minnie sucks, WCHA sucks, simple as that

Yeah let's not forget in 2008, they put 3 WCHA teams in the same bracket.
2007, we had three teams in the tournament. They found a way to put 2 in the same bracket.

Not to be a crybaby, but since 2005 it seems like they are doing everything in their power to keep that from happening again.

Absolutely true. I don't think there is any doubt that HE was better last year, but I also don't think there's any question about the fact that the tournament committee has done what they can to keep the WCHA at bay since 2005.

2009 also had 3 WCHA teams and 2 in the same bracket, as tUMD and DU were in the same bracket.

                            *edit*
However, they have done the same thing to Hockey East over the time period.
