  • How Many DQ's Have You Seen in a College Game?

Anybody catch the six man Royal Rumble (on video) from River Falls this past Sat. nite?
Following SNC's eighth goal, the puck barely hit the ice in the face off circle, before six guys dropped their gloves and went at it.
Must have been almost 50 pounds of equipment on the ice after the Main Event was over.
With the two DQ's in the second period...eight players were DQed in this game.
Record number of DQ's, for me in one college game.
    How many have you witnessed??

DH002235 should be able to tell you about some epic brawls Elmira has had with teams in the past. He told me about some but I can't remember all the years and who they were against. He's been following the team since the 70's

I think Mercyhurst and Brockport were two of the teams.

I remember one game when I was really young Mercyhurst and Elmira each had six players in the box after a scuffle.

Well, I wasn't there, so I can't attest to exact DQ numbers (maybe somebody on here was and would like to contribute), but the Plattsburgh-instigated brawl at the end of their quarterfinal series loss to Babson in '88 was bad enough to earn them a swift postseason ban for '89, and has to be considered pretty much the low point for the program's respectability.

Potsdam and Brockport a long time ago got into a bench clearing brawl after the final buzzer after overtime ended. I don't know how many DQs there were, but I'm sure there were a ton. The ref ran over to the scorer's table to grab a clipboard and started writing down notes...

Oh, and that game was televised on local Rochester cable. I always wondered if there is a tape available of that somewhere.

I was at this game in Utica's first season:

By my count that is 11. This began the... let's say dislike... that these two teams have shown for one another in the years since.

Utica's goalie got tossed, but not Neumann's. If I read that right, all five Neumann skaters were tossed. Four of Utica's skaters and the goalie were tossed and the remaining skater got a two minute minor. That sounds like a fun night at the local rink!

In the late 80's or early 90's, Stevens Point and Bemidji State got into it and the game ended with 254 penalty minutes. No idea how many were gamers, but it had to be a pretty hefty amount.

It's kind of sad, actually...Here it’s go to the rink, pay for your ice time and practice for an hour where we could just walk to the rink and skate for four hours if we wanted to...It was just a lot of fun. I wish I could go back and be eight years old for a couple days" -Neal Broten

Also, here is an NCAA game with 177 total penalty minutes (lead by Shane Stewart with 31 minutes), and both teams combined had only 9 power play opportunities!

Maybe this got some run on the boards when it happened, but it was 4 and a half years ago and needs to be rehashed:

First, notice that one of the players in this game (actually had a nice 4 pt game) was named Ron Mexico:

For those who don't know the story behind that name (and if you don't you've been living under a rock):

Excerpt from Michael Vick's wikipedia page:

                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
In March 2005, Sonya Elliott filed a civil lawsuit against Vick alleging she contracted genital herpes from him in the autumn of 2002 and that he failed to inform her that he had the disease.[26] Elliot further alleged that Vick had visited clinics under the alias "Ron Mexico" to get treatments and thus knew of his condition. On April 24, 2006, Vick's attorney, Lawrence Woodward, revealed that the lawsuit had been settled out of court under undisclosed terms.[27] Many fans bought custom jerseys from NFL.com with Vick's number 7 and the name "MEXICO" on the back. The NFL has since banned customizing jerseys with the name Mexico
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Also note that the NFL banned Harris Smith on custom NYG jerseys because that was the name Plax Burress used when he checked into the hospital after shooting himself. (I'm a Giants fan so I'm going to pull a Webb here and slam my head on my desk a few times and then finish the post.)

So I thought that was pretty interesting, it reminded me of the greatest alias of all-time. Then I did a quick Google search of "Ron Mexico Utica" and found this beauty:

UC player caught in name game

                      By CRAIG MUDER
                      Observer-Dispatch UTICA

Ron Mexico has been dragged into the national spotlight. Fortunately for the former Utica College hockey player, none of this is his fault. Unfortunately - because the case involves National Football League star Michael Vick - Mexico himself has become national news. Vick, the Atlanta Falcons' quarterback, is being sued by an alleged former girlfriend who claims he knowingly gave her genital herpes in 2003. The lawsuit, filed in the state court of Gwinnett County, Georgia, and posted on thesmokinggun.com, alleges that Vick has used the name "Ron Mexico" as an alias "for the purposes of herpes testing and/or treatment." Soon after the lawsuit was published, radio stations from across the country began calling the real Ron Mexico in Utica. "They did a `Google' search and Ron Mexico came up playing hockey for Utica College," said Mexico, a senior from Big Rapids, Mich. "Me and my dad are the only Ron Mexicos in the country, I think. "I found out two or three days ago when my buddy from Michigan told me he heard it on the radio. I thought he was just pulling my leg, but I got a call from a Los Angeles radio station yesterday." Mexico has not been served with any legal documents, and has never met Vick. But on the heels of UC's run in the ECAC Playoffs in March, Mexico's brush with Vick has brought even more publicity to the Pioneers' hockey program. "What's been great is on the air they've been introducing him as Utica College hockey player Ron Mexico," said UC coach Gary Heenan. "I had radio stations from Atlanta, L.A. and Detroit calling me to get Ron's number." Mexico, who appeared in 14 games for the Pioneers' this year, is one of 13 seniors who helped turn UC from a brand new program in 2001 to a national power in 2005. And when Mexico graduates this spring, his hockey legacy will long be remembered in Utica. His name, however, is now linked to Michael Vick. "I have no idea how he got it, but I hope this doesn't hurt me," joked Mexico. "You know what my major is? I'm going into hospital administration."

The author (Richard Pollock) did note:
Granted, this is a weaker correlation by statistical standards, however it is absolutely worth noting. While obvious it may be, there is the possibility that other variables associated with penalty killing, such as face-off winning percentages which I wrote about last week, could be inter-related.

Re: How Many DQ's Have You Seen in a College Game?

Just for kicks, I created a couple of tables similar to those in Norm's article for the 74 DIII programs active at some point over the period covered by Collegehockeystats (02-09 in the case of national statistics). Since the number of games played over that range varies significantly from team to team, I normalized the numbers by using Win% rather than points and PIM/G rather than straight-up PIM. First, team success:
                            Code:
                            Rank Team Win%
                            1 Adrian 0.92241

While there are some obvious standouts in terms of low PIM/G and high Win% (Middlebury, Norwich, Plattsburgh), the lists show plenty of aberrations, just as in the NHL article. In fact, the Pearson for the set is slightly lower: right around -0.28, indicative of a correlation between the stats, but by no means a strong one. It's also worth noting that if the data are pruned of their most likely candidates for outliers - say, any team with less than 150 games played over the 8-season span - the coefficient remains very nearly unchanged.

They're interesting data insofar as I think there are a fair number of people out there (myself included) who assumed a stronger correlation based on high-profile examples like the aforementioned Primelink teams. If anything, this bodes well for teams like Adrian who've fallen under scrutiny for their tendency to spend a lot of time in the box.
