  • Poll Predictions for 11/23...

Since Derek is obviously slacking and I'm incredibly bored, I'll get this thread started. I think there is a poll this week despite being the holiday week?

    1) St Norbert
    2) Oswego
    3) Plattsburgh
    4) Manhattanville
    5) Adrian
    6) Middlebury
    7) St. Scholastica
    8) Wis-Stout
    9) Elmira
    10) Norwich
    11) Wis-Superior
    12) Amherst
    13) Curry
    14) Wis-River Falls
    15) Hamline

Starting the season with high expectations, Hobart and Neumann should finally leave the rankings after disappointing starts. Perhaps they were ranked too high to start the season...

Should be interesting to see where River Falls ends up. Losing twice to the #1 team in the nation is nothing to hang your head about, but the 8-3 thrashing they took on Saturday will hurt them...

With an impressive weekend in Western NY, it wouldn't surprise mee too much to see Plattsburgh leap Oswego to take the #2 spot. What a argument/conversation that would start...

It would be pretty surprising if Plattsburgh hurdled Oswego on the basis of beating 2 teams the Laker's have already taken care of.

I'm not saying they should, but consider this...

Nov 9th's poll had Oswego 17 points ahead of Plattsburgh...
Nov 16th's poll had Oswego 14 points ahead of Plattsburgh...

So in a week where Oswego beat cortland 5-1 and an almost ranked Utica team 3-2...they lost 3 points to a Plattsburgh team that beat Morrisville 5-1 (still much less competition than Cortland or Utica despite their surge this year).

Also, while Oswego 'took care' of the western teams, they certainly didn't do so in as impressive fashion as Platty did this past weekend...

Margin of victory should not matter. Some coaches take their foot off the pedal when the lead gets comfortable, so I never place great weight on it.

In a sport where you really don't get to see everyone play, I think the boxscore (margin of victory, SOG, PIM, etc) does play a factor. How else can you evaluate a team without seeing them play?

Now if you're talking margin of victory in DI football, I would certainly put less weight on that because you can actually turn on ESPN and see with your own eyes how good a team is.

                Hmm...interesting happenings.

One thing that I thought was interesting is it appears there are four "tiers" in the poll with many voters probably putting each group of teams in a different order among their specific tier.

The first tier ends with #5 Adrian as there is a 70 point gap back to Elmira in sixth. I must say I'm stunned the Soaring Eagles jumped so far up. While I think they are playing better hockey since the Morrisville loss, they still havent quite put all the pieces together. They'll get a great test Dec 4th and 5th when they travel to Utica and Manhattanville.

#11 River Falls ends the second tier as there is a 57 point gap back to #12 Superior.

Third tier ends with Curry at #17. Both Curry and Neumann just miss out on the poll.

Then the rest of the teams make up the fourth tier probably garnered a #14 or #15 spot in one or two polls to round the honorable mentions.

I dont remember seeing a poll with voting with this big of gaps between the sections of the poll. Found it interesting.

Based on Skidmore's 2 wins over a very strong NEC and St. Anselm's, I would move them ahead of Curry into 15th place. Curry may have 4 wins, but they are against weak opponents. Skidmore is a very young team (18 Freshmen and Sophomores) and should only improve as they gain experience.

I'll see the horses this weekend, but how does Amherst drop one and stay ranked? I wish rankings were based on actual facts instead of reputation. Didn't NEC win their league last year? Ahead of Norwich? How many teams in the Nescac/east crossover are 2-0 after the first week?

Sorry, my mistake, I forgot about the Norwich tank job that let NEC host. Also, after the Skidmore tank job against Potsdam, they can go back to the interlock and resurface at the end of the season.
