  • CC @ Minnesota State 11/13-14

Mavericks have a bye this week but I thought I'd start the thread early. I went to both games at DU and the Mavs looked pretty good overall--played a mostly smart game penalty-wise but gave up some soft goals. PP was terrible on Friday but improved on Saturday.

CC wasn't picked to finish very high in the WCHA this year but is currently 4-1-1 with good games against Wisconsin and a recent sweep of Tech.

I'll be at both games. Our Mavericks were probably fortunate to get one point at Denver, but we will need to win one of these games at home against CC.

A win is no sure thing by any means, but the Mavs always play tougher at home. I'm hoping they give us a couple of good games against a very tough opponent.

We're still rocking unknown goaltending and weak offense, so I'm not expecting much.

Are the Mavs healthy right now?

Man I'm excited! I am trying very hard to travel by car from Colo Spgs to Mankato for both these games. I should know for sure if I can go by Tuesday afternoon.

I saw Minnesota State play against Denver a couple weeks ago for the Friday night game. I was very impressed with Minnesota State. I will feel fortunate with two points this weekend. Yes, the Tigers are good, but so is State! Tigers are 1-0-1 on the road so far this season.

              Go Tigers!!

Mav fans. How easy or difficult will it be for a fan to walk up to the arena Friday afternoon and buy one ticket each for the Friday and Saturday game this weekend?

Won't be a problem at all. Crowds have been very light so far this year. I wouldn't be surprised if you found a couple seats on the glass or 10 rows up to be honest.

I hope you can make it out there. If you do, yell really loud so I can hear you on the radio!

Re: CC @ Minnesota State 11/13-14

I feel as though I'm just starting to form some opinions about this year's team. I think many of us suspected that some of the underclassmen who haven't had much playing time in previous years - due to a heavy reliance on the stars like Chad Rau - are pretty good. The defense is also very good, especially the defensive specialists who don't get much notice from the press and other teams' fans. Kris Fredheim has been an incredibly solid defenseman, and has taken his game to another level as a senior. Nate Prosser is another anchor for the team. With those guys and some talented younger players I think CC can put out 4 defensemen that are even with or not far behind the best top 4 from any other team. Goaltending was the biggest question mark coming into this season, and Joe Howe has answered that question very well so far.
But, even with those positives, there are still some concerns. I do worry that with the season ending injury to Vlassopolous the team doesn't have the top-end offense or depth at forward they needed to break into the top 3 in the WCHA. I think the forwards have been playing much better defensively than in past years, but CC is still minus in 5 on 5 play. The good news is that their PP and PK have been outstanding, but teams don't win championships if they lose 5 on 5. I also worry that CC has racked up wins against weaker teams and will struggle against the top teams in the league.
For the Tigers to have a chance to earn home ice this year, I think they must go 3-1 in their next 4 league games (MSU and UAA). With the MSU series on the road and UAA scoring some very impressive wins against DU and UND, 3-1 will be a real struggle.

Watching this years CC has been a lot more fun than watching last years CC

Some of that is the fans fault I suppose - expectations were high last year

So far CC has been competing well

Noticed MSU had a lot of speed vs Denver - that could make for some up and down the ice hockey this weekend (I hope)

Every week is a struggle - that is what we waited all summer for.
