  • Another PairWise Ranking Question...

Looking over USCHO and CHN this morning, they differ on PWR.

USCHO has BC and Denver tied at PWR 4, with Duluth at PWR 6.
CHN has all three tied at PWR 4 (in their daily schedules).

I understand the polls being different, but isn’t PairWise Ranking based on a singular known computer algorithm? How can two respected news sources have them different? Thanks.

    Respected?

I believe there is a slight difference in formula/interpretation that has been known for quite some time between the two sources. Which one is right, I'm not sure, but my hunch is that CHN is more accurate.

Don't follow CHN, but the PWR on this site can be slow to update.

I recall seeing an explanation that the pairwise at CHN use a slightly different formula until a certain point in the season because the sample size is too small to be accurate. I don't know that this is true, or at what point in the season they would use the real formula, but I saw that explanation earlier this season.

Are there simulators for each conference to play with final standings after picking W/L for remaining conference games? Or do all the calcs only go through conference tournaments for the purpose of estimated final PWR?

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, or not, but CHN has a "customize" feature to their pairwise site. It allows you to pick the outcomes of games yet to be played, and also change the outcomes of past games "to see what might have been" I guess.

Just follow the link below and click on "customize."

That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

                    Or this

You can add games to simulate the conference tournaments.
