Last night certainly wasn't Drackett's best game - he was flummoxed by some of Robert Morris' puck movement and way out of the net for two of his goals, but it was great to see the team rally around him and get the goals back, and to see Drackett and his teammates slam the door in the 3rd period. This felt like a game that would have gotten away from RIT in their down years (especially last year).

Random thought I had about Jordan Peacock last night: he reminds me of an elderly Jagr. The way he's able to keep the puck on his stick in the corners and along the walls while fending off defenders is incredible, and it allows him to move the puck much more quickly when a guy comes free than if he was merely controlling the puck in his skates or slowing it down in the corners. If he was a better skater (speed and agility wise - his stability is fine and allows him to do what I just mentioned), I feel like NHL teams would be knocking down the door looking to sign him...of course then he probably would have never made his way to our campus. Such is the life of the low conference D-1 team, I suppose.

Interesting to see Wayne call out a player, even if not by name, for a couple of the goals. I thought Willett was pretty bad on the first goal - you never turn your back to the puck in that situation, you have to try to block the pass - but at the same time the compromising position on the PK had already happened and he was in a bad situation regardless. Looking at the replays it looks like the Tigers had different defensemen out on all three RM goals, so he's likely talking about a forward. Possibly Kruper? He was beaten down the wing to set up RM's 2nd goal and gave the puck away along the boards on the 3rd. Will be interesting to see if he's in the press box tonight.

One more post before game time (when I have to disappear since I'm at work and have to watch on the DVR tonight): believe it or not, Atlantic Hockey does not have the worst non-conference record in Division 1 hockey at the moment. Now granted, the full year has yet to be played, and some teams (such as Army and some of the Ivies) have yet to play a non-conference game, but a big bulk of them do tend to be played earlier in the year, and the AHA's non-conference record is comparable to Hockey East (!) and significantly better than the WCHA.

Even better, I'm not sure you can point to AHA teams playing a weak out of conference schedule as you could in the past - Sacred Heart has beaten a Hockey East and a Big 10 team, Air Force is the only AHA school to play the independent Arizona State (the rest of Arizona State's games have been against other conferences, and both of their wins have come against non AHA opponents), AIC and Mercyhurst both won AT Penn State, etc.

All this results in a team like Army ranking 15th in the Pairwise without playing a single non-conference game so far. Teams such as them, Air Force (who have gotten off to a frightful conference start after going 4-1-1 out of conference), Canisius (0-0-1 OOC) have a real opportunity to fight for at-large bids (or a non 16 seed for the champion if they win the conference) with a representative non-conference performance for the 2nd season in a row after Air Force got a #3 seed last season. Hell, if RIT gets their heads out of their asses in non-conference play and somehow take care of UConn and sweep Providence (or maybe even just take 3), they could also be in the conversation for an at-large bid with a great regular season if disaster strikes in the single elimination final/semi-final. Obviously the easiest way to get in is still to win the tournament, but it's encouraging to see the entire conference continue to make strides.

Here's the OOC records, for reference (they don't add up to .500 because of Arizona State being unaffiliated)
      NCHC: 31-13-8 (.673)
      B10: 29-15-4 (.646)
      ECAC: 17-20-8 (.467)
      HE: 21-29-5 (.427)
      AHA: 11-16-3 (.417)
      WCHA: 16-27-4 (.383)

Well, can't say I saw 5-1 in conference as a particularly likely scenario as I was heading home from the RPI game a few weeks ago. Drackett was pretty great tonight, shades of the first time we saw him.

Feel like we're in the upside down right now though, with AIC in the top 5 and Air Force in the basement.

Feels like forever since we've swept a quality opponent at home. Or any opponent.

Did some research...this is the 3rd ever regular season weekend sweep at the Polisseni. We actually won 4 in a row at home (2 vs. Mercyhurst and a 2nd round playoff sweep of Air Force) in the opening season of the rink, and the other was Army last year. We've actually had more road sweeps during this time period than home sweeps.

It would be great to see them start to turn home ice into the intimidating presence that the Ritter was (except in the last year or two).

It doesn't matter if we beat UConn and Providence. Wins against them don't matter any more than any other road win on our schedule, at least until one of them makes it into the top 10 in RPI. The two most important factors by far are winning percentage and strength of schedule.

I will add that the rest of the league nabbing points (and let's not forget that tie against Northeastern can only help) in OOC and RIT beating them will matter in the common opponent portion of Pairwise. I would love to see RIT get a win or two against those teams and UConn especially seems very winnable.

RIT snagged 2 points in the latest poll. Big games at Air Force though to see if they can stay in the rankings.

That was # 4, Valette getting all turned in the wrong direction on Ferguson's first goal.

Although it is true that an 0-5-1 OOC record would pretty much guarantee that a top 16 finish in the PWR (and therefore, NCAA tournament seeding) cannot happen.

Way to go Mr. Steven Shultz!
Yes, congratulations to Mr. Schultz. The following hypothetical scenario would never happen, as it would be highly unprofessional, and would fan the flames of an already volatile political situation here in the town. However, long-time Corner Crew members would probably appreciate this:

So, fast-forward to Mr. Schultz's inauguration ceremony in January... Imagine for a moment, after Mr. Schultz takes the oath of office, he pulls out his cell phone, and starts doing one of his patented taking a message from the opposing goalie's mom routines, that he used to do in the waning minutes of blowout wins in the D3 days. But in this case, of course, it would be taking a message for the outgoing supervisor. He then puts his phone away, passes along the message (laced, of course, with some snide remarks), punctuated by "Oh, she also wanted to tell you...." And of course, a couple dozen Corner Crew members in attendance shout out their 2 favorite words to complete the message!

A younger, and even less mature version of me used to be quite entertained by some of the stuff that Mr. Schultz used to come up with in these fake phone call bits!

I was thinking at a minimum a hearty "Congratulations, you suck!" would be in order at his inauguration, but I'm not sure the general public would get it.

How so? Because of common opponent comparisons? Or just because it would mean too many losses on the record?

Thanks for the correction, must have misheard and I definitely don't have all the new guys numbers down yet.

As for Air Force...I mentally pencil in two losses for every trip to Colorado. That way anything we get is a bonus. Nice to get a little buffer before the trip - not being able to even fall to .500 with a bad weekend up there is a nice situation 6 conference games into the season.

Actually, the quality wins bonus applies for the top 20, which Army was when we swept them, and where Providence does currently reside.

Although the QWB only applies to the position of a team at the end of the season when the calculation is run by the NCAA for their selection process.

The final PWR ranking takes into account where your opponents rank after the season is over, not where they ranked when you played them. That's how the rankings can get a bit more volatile than one might expect at the end of the conference tournaments when teams move up or down in the rankings without even playing any games.

Oops. Didn't realize someone had already addressed this. Never mind
