In spite of being primarily a DIII school, Union, after the Harkness hangover, has cultivated an agreeable sense of proportion with DI hockey. Early skeptics are now enthusiastic converts. America and maybe even the odd liberal professor/president love a winner. Thank you Nate Leaman and Rick Bennett!
DIII Colorado College has been known for years as a first rate academic institution. Its DI hockey program has thrived throughout that time. With a comparable academic reputation Union has followed suit. It’s a great model, particularly when weighed against the huge budgets of the North Dakotas of the world. It is doubtful Harris would tamper with one of Union’s most impressive credentials and the tremendous source of pride it has become, a national championship caliber program. The PR benefits are too great.
Well put.. at this point even Roger Hull couldn't screw things up (well at least not too much). Support for the hockey team on campus, among alumni, and in the community couldn't be higher. The events of 4 years ago have pretty much ensured that and the pending rink improvements will further "seal the deal". Hockey is easily the top sport on campus, which wasn't the case even 10-15 years ago, and no reason to think a new president will change that. Harris went to Northwestern and spent a lot of time at Cornell, two very good academic schools with D-1 athletics, so should more than understand and be supportive of the hockey situation at U.

Okay, it's not incredibly important but I think it should be said... "seal the deal." should have the period inside the quote, not outside of it. Seriously. Sheesh!

Interesting. I usually make this mistake as well.
The most common question people ask about quotation marks is whether periods and commas go inside or outside, and the answer depends on where your audience lives because in American English we always put periods and commas inside quotation marks, but in British English periods and commas can go inside or outside
Our president, Dr, Ainlay, was getting many calls demanding that he fire the coach and terminate the rest of the men's hockey season. The pressure was enormous. These calls were coming from local and national media and many others and some that would surprise you. Ainlay was under siege. Back then our boards had several former star athletes as members whom, I am sure, supported the program along with our athletic director, another alumnus. Ainlay did a remarkable job in handling the situation meeting with concerned parents, players, students, faculty, alumni, board members, community, media, etc. He spent a lot of time with the Captains. A different person at the helm might have caved to the pressure. That would have been a disaster for the team, the school and the careers of many of the players. The program would have been shattered. No national championship.
Union has no "sustainable competitive advantage" with regards to hockey. The fact that we are able to even field a D-I team with a D-III athletic organization and infrastructure is a small miracle and remember that our athletic program reports to an academic dean. We need big-time buy-in and support from everyone and all constituencies to make this program work.
The video is awful, someone should call the channel. They are not showing the goal area to the rightz(on Point). Also by the boards at bottom of screen they're not showing about five feet out from the boards. Union had a good scoring chance on Point and it didn't even show, the camera cuts off at about halfway in from the blue line.
That was a bummer in the end. To give up the game-tying goal at home with less than a minute to go is tough.
Kupsky was fantastic and was one of the main reasons Union had a slim 1-0 lead, but overall it wasn't a very impressive showing on Union's part.
Coupled with RPI's loss, tomorrow's game has lost some luster since first place isn't on the line anymore. The tie did clinch second for Union, so that's not on the line tomorrow either.
It's still an important game for the Pairwise, especially since tonight's tie has (for now) knocked Union down a peg. But I'm a little worried Union comes out flat after a demoralizing tie and not having a shot at first.
