  • Tampa Frozen Four- Things to do, places to go, etc

So, as one of the few (only? /shrug) "regular" posters who lives in the greater Tampa area, I suppose I'll kick off a thread to discuss things to do, places to go during the Frozen Four weekend. If you have ideas on what you might like to do, feel free to mention it and let's see what we can come up with.

It's still a bit early to say for sure, but weather at the moment appears to be quite nice. Temperatures appear to be in the 70-80 degree range, with mostly sunny days. I will mention that this is Florida, and we're nearing the start of afternoon showers/thunderstorms that happen nearly every day, regardless of how the day begins.

    So, things to do.

    Downtown/Around the Arena:

    Florida Aquarium: http://www.flaquarium.org/
American Victory (Fully operational WW2 ship): http://www.americanvictory.org/
    Tampa Bay History Center: http://tampabayhistorycenter.org/#_=_
Pirate's Water Taxi: http://www.piratewatertaxi.com/ (This is quite new, so I don't know too much about it. YMMV)
    Tampa Water Taxi: http://tampawatertaxico.com/#_=_
Channelside Plaza- Adjacent to the rink, has several restaurants/bars/shops (Hooters, Wet Willies, Cold Stone Creamery, Splitsville (bowling alley/bar), etc). http://channelsidebayplaza.com/

You could spend time over in Ybor City, easily accessible by: http://www.tecolinestreetcar.org/#_=_
    - I probably wouldn't spend much time in Ybor after dark, but some nice shops and restaurants, as well as some old cigar factories.

Interested in microbreweries? Tampa has a few that are pretty noteworthy, and well worth a visit.

http://thebrewerybay.com/ has a fantastic listing of breweries in the area, much easier to link that than individually.

I will say that I've been to Cigar City several times, and have enjoyed it quite a bit.

There is also this, if you have a group: http://www.tampabrewtours.com/

    Making it a sports trip?
The Tampa Yankees (Class A) do have a game Friday night against Lakeland (DET affiliate), at the Yankees Spring Training field. Tickets are like $3-6.

If you have a car, and just need to get more hockey, the Florida Everblades (ECHL) have a game vs Orlando, down in Estero, Friday night. It would be about a 2 hour drive, but mentioning it in case somebody is interested.

Unfortunately, the Tampa Bay Rays will only be home just prior to, and the week after the Frozen Four.

    Beach bum?

The greater area around Tampa/St. Pete has numerous beaches that are worth spending a day at. Clearwater Beach is likely the closest, but there is beach access most of the way down the coast to St. Pete. If you have a car, I'll recommend a trip south to Siesta Key (Probably 1.5-2 hours south, but a fabulous beach town.) Warning: if you're spending time at a beach, WEAR SUNSCREEN. Should go without saying, but it doesn't take long in Florida to make your vacation miserable.

    Thrill seeker?

    Busch Gardens, Tampa: https://seaworldparks.com/en/buschgardens-tampa/

    Disney/Universal/SeaWorld is about 1.5 hours up I-4.

Let's start there. If you have other specific interests, feel free to bring them up.

This is, by no means, a definitive list. If you did something not listed back in 2012 that you enjoyed, feel free to mention it!

The list I made was more of a general list, since it wasn't my purpose to turn into TripAdvisor or google.

Like i said, poor choices. We like all sorts of museums, chamber music, bluegrass, and skiing. Any combination of those. And yes, we are happy to be this kind of minority too. There was a very good Romare Bearden exhibition at a museum there. The rest was pretty forgettable.
      Sunny Florisippiana? meh at best.
Bringing this over, since it fits best over here.

Don't know which museums you visited while you were down in 2012, but I'll go a bit further. Maybe I can find something you weren't aware of, now that I have some specifics for things you might be looking for.

      Henry B. Plant museum: http://www.ut.edu/plantmuseum/#_=_
Museum of Science and Industry: http://www.mosi.org/#_=_ (Online reviews appear to be hit/miss, I haven't been so can't give my thoughts)
      Tampa museum of Art: http://tampamuseum.org/#_=_
      Ybor City State Museum: http://www.ybormuseum.org/#_=_
Tampa Fireman's Museum: http://tampafirefightersmuseum.org/ (This sounds a bit on the small side, but YMMV)

There is also several theaters in Tampa. Straz Center, Tampa Theater. Google will probably help you there.

I saw some murder mystery shows, when I did a general Tampa Event search earlier.

If you go in with a "I didn't have fun before, so I won't have fun this time" attitude... /shrug

That said, and upon a little more thought, you may want to see if there is more in St. Petersburg for you, particularly on the "off-day".

Thanks for posting the suggestions HP. I was there for the 2012 FF and had a great time, and am looking forward to this year, especially since there is a team that interests me. We did Busch Gardens and loved it - I'm not necessarily a roller coaster guy but wow! Fun! After the FF we will be spending a few days in Ft. Meyers. The beach is very nice and was just re-done before we got there in 2012. Pretty nice scenery too. This year we are thinking about going north of Tampa to check out Crystal Springs. What do you think about that idea?

I've heard great things, particularly from Jan to Mar when the manatees are enjoying the warmer waters. It could be getting late to have much for manatee activity, unfortunately, but I am sure it's still a beautiful area to check out.

The Dali museum is a must-see. The Tampa Art Museum is small but has a pretty good antiquities section. The Columbia restaurant in Ybor city is also a place you should eat at when near Tampa. We also liked Lee Roy Selmon's. If you are a degenerate and follow horse racing, Tampa Bay Downs has a card of small stakes that day, a welcome change from the usual claimers.

Thanks for the wonderful suggestions HP1015. I've left the SO in charge of plans for Friday, since Thursday and Saturday are mine. This will definitely help.

IF I recall in the other thread, your tastes were running a little more artsy - I would suggest heading to downtown St Petersburg (just across the bridge). Several restaurants (some more upscale)/bars along beach drive; Salvodor Dali museaum, several smaller art studios, Chihuly Glass Exhibit. The Canopy Lounge (atop Birchwood hotel, 4th floor) has an excellent view out over the Ocean/a great place for a drink.

The wife and I returned from a trip to Tampa 11 days ago. Besides baseball (Tigers) and hockey (Red Wings), we went to the Seminole Hard Rock Casino, the Clearwater Aquarium, the Columbia Restaurant, TECO Manatee Center, and a farm market in Plant City for really good Strawberry Shortcake. On a prior visit we went to Weeki Watchee State Park to see the mermaid show, a remnant of post WW2 to 1980 era Florida.

As already noted in the other posts, there is a lot to do in Tampa

I drive back down this Wednesday for the Finals.

Well, to read the article you'd think that golf was a no brainer but for the average fan, the 250 dollar greens fees and a 1 hour drive are a lot. there are other golf places closer that are quite good and cost about 100 instead of 250. Also, I'd recommend the TACO bus. Good food cheap, three of them around tampa. Also birdwatching, if you are into that is pretty good, though some birds are starting to go north now.

USCHO's Jim Connolly gives 5 tips for enjoying Tampa. Some I've mentioned, others are pretty good as well.

We've got a group booked on a brew bus tour Friday night, definitely looking forward to that. With our Southwest Florida beer tour tomorrow since we're on a pre-FF Fort Myers Beach trip now, we'll be getting in plenty of breweries this week. We also enjoyed Ybor city last time and will try to make it back to that area for some food and drink.

there are, yes. however jim mentioned that streamsong is on a par with bandon dunes (which will also cost you a bit). streamsong is the new next big thing. there is a black course also in the growing stages that will be opened next year. there are rumors as well that they want to recreate the lost "Lido" course on the property. mookie is visiting there next week as he's not been to see blue or red yet. looking forward to seeing what the excitement is.
